Hoffmann wrote an excellent guide to understanding the world of medicinal plants。 I enjoyed learning about the different classes of compounds responsible for bioactivity in plants, as well as the pharmacology and toxicology involved。 I’ll certainly be referring back to this book many times in the future。

Unlike many others, this is a bit more technical verse the simple use of this herb to cure this problem or vice versa。 Since the book is more about understanding the benefits of the plant and the body's way of using these nutrients to repair and break down for maximum use。 It really can still provide the knowledge of using the perfect herbs that one can harvest from the backyard or a window herbal planter。 Even how to use them to make one's own healing product, with the most natural and abundant amount of herbal healing energy。 What I found a bit different is that it allows for a big part to explain the science of the plants, the many small tables of certain aspects of a plant and herb, and also the breakdown of each of the body's systems。 It does make it quite easier to take in how to repair a specific section that corresponds to that system, and find out what one should look out for or be sure to stock up on。 However, it isn't a quick book for those who need immediate information or a dictionary that will point them to the herb that will cure their problem。 I don't find this additional information to be anywhere near bad or useless! It can really come in handy for knowledge of the benefits of eating certain plants and what they carry that can promote healing, protection, and the ability to provide nutrients we need to maintain our health。 I take it as a mix of a traditional help guide, but also a perfect way to get a little knowledge as a Nutritionist or Dietician。 Sometimes a medical book can be just like a dictionary, references the problem you are looking up。 However, this one is more to do about the true effect it has on the body or inside it and why it is significant to help one's health。 Plus, it also puts out a full layout of why certain habits are the worst choices to follow and continue to do。 Such as that of smoking and the respiratory issues that come from it。 Such as the many diseases that are associated with smoking and the Respiratory System。 Finally, this is quite a remarkable book of information and extremely well worth reading! I am very pleased with this book and the guidance it provides for my own knowledge。 Even for a more elaborate guide on herbal medicine, it really adds a bit more filler than my quick resource books would never provide。"I have been given a free copy of The Medical Herbalism in exchange for my honest opinion" 。。。more

Not a book for beginners。 This a fantastic resource for both student and professional medical herbalists。 There some minor errors in places which could always be fixed with a second edition。

Very practical and scientific approach to the greatly debated subject of herbs and their efficacy。 David Hoffmann is a faculty member of the California School of Herbal Studies, and if you're looking for something that helps herbs make sense, or if you're a little skeptical about their potency, or perhaps a scientist looking for the science that proves the proclamation of "herbs are medicine", you should definitely consider this book。To quote the front innerfold on the book, "Medical Herbalism i Very practical and scientific approach to the greatly debated subject of herbs and their efficacy。 David Hoffmann is a faculty member of the California School of Herbal Studies, and if you're looking for something that helps herbs make sense, or if you're a little skeptical about their potency, or perhaps a scientist looking for the science that proves the proclamation of "herbs are medicine", you should definitely consider this book。To quote the front innerfold on the book, "Medical Herbalism is a foundational textbook on the scientific principles of therapeutic herbalism and their application in medicine。 Based on the author's more than twenty-five years of herbal practice, it contains comprehensive information concerning the identification and use of medicinal plants both by chemical structure and physiological effect, the art and science of making herbal medicine, and the challenge to current research paradigms posed by complex plant medicines。" 。。。more

While full of information, completely indigestible to the average reader as limited "how this applies" information。 Great as a textbook companion to a learning environment, but not a resource for self learning。 While full of information, completely indigestible to the average reader as limited "how this applies" information。 Great as a textbook companion to a learning environment, but not a resource for self learning。 。。。more

A great deal of information here。 There are many sections describing body systems (e。g。 musculoskeletal), a nice materia medica, and sections describing common constituents (e。g。 pyrrolizidine alkaloids)。 A great deal of this was over my head, but it is a necessary book for herbalist as it allows you to take look at a herb's constituent and see if they are safe。 For example, if you were considering taking mugwort you could lookup thujone and learn about its toxicity and know that there is some r A great deal of information here。 There are many sections describing body systems (e。g。 musculoskeletal), a nice materia medica, and sections describing common constituents (e。g。 pyrrolizidine alkaloids)。 A great deal of this was over my head, but it is a necessary book for herbalist as it allows you to take look at a herb's constituent and see if they are safe。 For example, if you were considering taking mugwort you could lookup thujone and learn about its toxicity and know that there is some risk involved。 True, you would be being rather reductionist (the author thinks mugwort is fine) and perhaps wrong but I'd rather be safe than sorry until I have an expert to consult or know more。 。。。more

I like David's book but its very allopathic in its approach, for instance if you have X use this formula。 Having been trained in Chinese Medicine I like to find the clients pattern of dysfunction and build the formula around that not make the client fit the formula。 So if you don't that much about herbal medicine its a good reference。 I like David's book but its very allopathic in its approach, for instance if you have X use this formula。 Having been trained in Chinese Medicine I like to find the clients pattern of dysfunction and build the formula around that not make the client fit the formula。 So if you don't that much about herbal medicine its a good reference。 。。。more

This book has almost too much info, and all of it is worthwhile。 It is an excellent reference book for when you have plenty of time to just sit and study it。 Not something I would drag out every day, but the info is really useful and good to know。 I think it belongs on every herbalist's book shelf。 This book has almost too much info, and all of it is worthwhile。 It is an excellent reference book for when you have plenty of time to just sit and study it。 Not something I would drag out every day, but the info is really useful and good to know。 I think it belongs on every herbalist's book shelf。 。。。more
