★ "Crow is a determined and dynamic heroine。" --Publishers Weekly
★ "Beautiful, evocative。" --Kirkus

The moving story of an orphan, determined to know her own history, who discovers the true meaning of family。

Twelve-year-old Crow has lived her entire life on a tiny, isolated piece of the starkly beautiful Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts。 Abandoned and set adrift in a small boat when she was just hours old, Crow's only companions are Osh, the man who rescued and raised her, and Miss Maggie, their fierce and affectionate neighbor across the sandbar。

Crow has always been curious about the world around her, but it isn't until the night a mysterious fire appears across the water that the unspoken question of her own history forms in her heart。 Soon, an unstoppable chain of events is triggered, leading Crow down a path of discovery and danger。

Vivid and heart-wrenching, Lauren Wolk's Beyond the Bright Sea is a gorgeously crafted and tensely paced tale that explores questions of identity, belonging, and the true meaning of family。

Crow, Osh, and Maggie created a lovely picture of island home in the NorthEast and their story was incredibly endearing。 It is a good about goodness, kindness, and acceptance, with the fascinating backdrop of Penikese Island and the history it held as a place of isolation for those with Hansen’s Disease (leprosy)。 Add in mystery, intrigue, and treasure - a story any kid will love。 Good themes about the importance of family, belonging, and love。

This book was so special and sweet and will have you thinking about the meaning of family and looking like these emojis: 🥺🥰。Crow is an extremely likable character to follow and read about and I loved her journey and her relationship with Osh and Miss Maggie。 She’s still only twelve when the book ends, and I would definitely read more books about her if the author decides to write more (please)。 Her adventurous spirit, her resourcefulness, her love for others, her growth over the story—I just lov This book was so special and sweet and will have you thinking about the meaning of family and looking like these emojis: 🥺🥰。Crow is an extremely likable character to follow and read about and I loved her journey and her relationship with Osh and Miss Maggie。 She’s still only twelve when the book ends, and I would definitely read more books about her if the author decides to write more (please)。 Her adventurous spirit, her resourcefulness, her love for others, her growth over the story—I just loved it all。If you want a memorable middle grade book that you can read in a day, this is a great choice。 I read it for my book club and we had a lovely discussion about it。 I love dipping my toes into middle grade books every now and then!CW: abandonment, death of parent。 。。。more

Wonderful story!

Five stars all the way until the end, where I debated giving it 4 because the ending wrapped up a little quick for me。 But a beautiful story, plus Morgan means Bright Sea so 🤷‍♀️😊 Overall I loved it and it was a true page turner, even if I wanted more at the end。

What a beautifully written book about knowing oneself for who you are。 Can’t wait to read it to my class of 27 grade 6’s

I started to read this book because of the cover( It was so pretty 😍)。 I had no idea what the plot was about, and the plot surprised me。 This is the second historical fiction book I read about leprosy colonies。 And leprosy colonies are so depressing。 It is so sad what happened to these people and how they had to live out the end of their life。 It took me a minute to get into this, but once I did it was a pretty solid read。

I thought this was one do the most beautifully written books。 I wish I were a better writer so I could give it the review it deserves。 Perfect!

A wonderfully woven story of fact and fiction。 Characters and setting richly developed and described。 Who knew there was a leper colony on an island off of Cape Cod?

I read this aloud to my 12 year old son and absolutely loved it。 He finally said to me, “Why do you cry when you read this book?” I just loved the relationships between Crow, Osh and Miss Maggie。 This is a wonderful coming of age story that highlights the love of a birth family no longer living together and that of an unlikely adopted family。 The descriptions of the island and sea are gorgeous and the character development is great too。 Five stars。

One of those gorgeous, soft books with words chosen the way a chef chooses ingredients。 This one will stay with me for a long time。

Actual rating: 4。5 starsA good story of adventure, curiosity, and finding the meaning of family。

This book ended abruptly, and half of the mysteries were left unsolved, and half of the problems were left unresolved。 Don’t read this unless you like apparently permanent cliffhangers! If there was a sequel it would be a good story。

I'm not a big reader of historical fiction, but I really enjoyed Crow's story while learning about the history of the Elizabeth Islands。 I'm not a big reader of historical fiction, but I really enjoyed Crow's story while learning about the history of the Elizabeth Islands。 。。。more

This is a gorgeous book。 It holds slices of narrative magic。 It's imaginative and descriptive in a way that makes you feel like you're there。 And that you never want it to end。 I'm off to find the rest of Lauren Wolk's books。 💜 This is a gorgeous book。 It holds slices of narrative magic。 It's imaginative and descriptive in a way that makes you feel like you're there。 And that you never want it to end。 I'm off to find the rest of Lauren Wolk's books。 💜 。。。more

Better than average middle reader with a mystery, leprosy, and treasure。 I liked the young main character very much。 She had confidence, she was clever, and she did not back down from finding answers。

Anita

One of my favorite books I’ve read in awhile。 Crow, Osh, and miss Maggie were excellent characters。 I was entertained from the get go。 A great story about what it means to have/be family。

Ava Monet

I loved this book when I read it in fifth grade。 I read it because I loved Wood hollow so much and decided to read some of Lauren Wolk’s other books。 I would recommend!

Connie

Lovely, although this one may appeal to adults more than children due to its slow pace。 (It does pick up about three quarters of the way through。)

Jill Greek

This book was so heartwarming。

A beautiful look at belonging, empathy, and the effect of lingering fear。 Sierra told me to read this one; I'm glad she did — I got through it in a day and I'm still thinking about it。 A beautiful look at belonging, empathy, and the effect of lingering fear。 Sierra told me to read this one; I'm glad she did — I got through it in a day and I'm still thinking about it。 。。。more
