I highly recommend the audio of “More Than I Love My Life” by David Grossman， translated by Jessica Cohen and performed by Gilli Messer。 Messer narrates the voices with aplomb and skill。 Her eastern European accented English lends the audio authenticity to this rich and involved story。 If I allowed a criticism， it would be that it was overly ambitious…。。there is a lot going on。 So much， that after finishing the audio， I needed to go back to the beginning to remember how this all started。 There a I highly recommend the audio of “More Than I Love My Life” by David Grossman， translated by Jessica Cohen and performed by Gilli Messer。 Messer narrates the voices with aplomb and skill。 Her eastern European accented English lends the audio authenticity to this rich and involved story。 If I allowed a criticism， it would be that it was overly ambitious…。。there is a lot going on。 So much， that after finishing the audio， I needed to go back to the beginning to remember how this all started。 There are an abundant of tangents that throw the story at times。This is a story of three generations of women who suffered loss which resulted in abandonment。 It’s a story of women attempting to find forgiveness and understanding of each other。 The story begins with a birthday party for 90-year-old Vera。 Gili， Vera’s granddaughter， is now a documentary filmmaker， decides to document Vera’s life。 Vera was sent to Goli Otok， the Adriatic prison island， after refusing to renounce her dead husband as being a Stalinist。 Her daughter Nina， Gili’s mother， felt abandoned by both parents because at age 6， she was sent to live with her hateful aunt。 What Vera endured is unfathomable。Vera is released after 3 years and moves to a kibbutz in Israel with Nina。 Nina never rebounds from her feelings of abandonment and her story is almost as tragic as Vera’s。 Nina marries， has Gili， and abandons Gili。 Luckily for Gili， Vera raises her along with Gili’s father。The three women， plus Gili’s father， also a filmmaker， venture to record Vera’s story。 Nina adds her tragic parts， and Gili struggles to understand motive and revelations。 Generations of suffering， grief， loss， and trauma snowball into a heartbreaking story。Adding impact is that this story is loosely based on a Yugoslavian partisan fighter。Even with all the tangents， which were close to being a distraction， this is a fantastic audio。 。。。more

David Grossman is a favorite author and was eager to read it。 I attended a captivating interview with him， on this book， at the （NYC） Streiker Center。 Unfortunately I could not connect and lost interest in this novel。

I received an advanced review copy from Edelweiss and tried to read Israeli literary giant David Grossman's newest novel on my Kindle。 I was unsuccessful。 So， I tried the audiobook and had a much easier time getting into the story。 As the Guardian review describes it， the narrative structure "is teasingly digressive， threading back and forward between different time periods， between first- and third-person voices" which is why I think I had such a hard time reading it。 But the audiobook narrator I received an advanced review copy from Edelweiss and tried to read Israeli literary giant David Grossman's newest novel on my Kindle。 I was unsuccessful。 So， I tried the audiobook and had a much easier time getting into the story。 As the Guardian review describes it， the narrative structure "is teasingly digressive， threading back and forward between different time periods， between first- and third-person voices" which is why I think I had such a hard time reading it。 But the audiobook narrator does an excellent job distinguishing between the characters and the time period so it was much easier to follow。 However， I found the character of Nina so bizarre and unlikeable and couldn't figure out why Rafael was so infatuated with her。 His unwavering devotion to her over 50+ years was totally pathetic。 I like the Guardian's description of it as "a Russian doll of a novel， a book of secrets wrapped within secrets" and I was compelled to finish the book because I wanted to know what the big secret was。 The reveal was a bit anti-climatic and I don't think I understand what happened in the end。 And I agree with the Kirkus review that it is "occasionally moving but more often overwrought。" I listened to David Grossman speak on a webinar at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center in NYC this morning and he was interesting and engaging。 But， I've tried to read and understand his novels several times and have never enjoyed them。 I think I just need to finally give up。 。。。more

Prima volta che approccio Grossman: leggo che forse non è il migliore dei suoi libri， non lo saprei dire。Sicuramente però è un libro che mi ha emozionata， che si propone di affrontare temi sensibili， sia sul piano personale （l'abbandono， l'interpretazione dell'amore e della maternità） sia sul piano storico （uno scrittore israeliano che tratta di ebrei ma che decide di affrontare un argomento troppo spesso considerato marginale， ossia i campi di rieducazione nella Iugoslavia titina）。 E lo fa con Prima volta che approccio Grossman: leggo che forse non è il migliore dei suoi libri， non lo saprei dire。Sicuramente però è un libro che mi ha emozionata， che si propone di affrontare temi sensibili， sia sul piano personale （l'abbandono， l'interpretazione dell'amore e della maternità） sia sul piano storico （uno scrittore israeliano che tratta di ebrei ma che decide di affrontare un argomento troppo spesso considerato marginale， ossia i campi di rieducazione nella Iugoslavia titina）。 E lo fa con un'ottica molto particolare， attraverso l'io narrante aspirante cineasta che raccoglie storie e filmati sulla propria famiglia。Forse quest'ultimo aspetto toglie， a tratti， un po' di autenticità alle conversazioni。 C'è poi un po' di "affollamento" di personaggi， almeno due dei quali （l'io narrante e la protagonista effettiva） sono fortemente caratterizzati。 Eppure le ultime 50 pagine， dopo un po' di fatica iniziale， le ho lette d'un fiato， scoprendo di sperare nel lieto fine per nulla scontato e lasciandomi coinvolgere da questa storia che tocca tre generazioni。 Molto consigliato。 。。。more

Lo primero que pensé al oír hablar de la novela de David Grossman fue «¡Qué buen título！ Ojalá se me ocurrieran títulos tan buenos como este para mis novelas»。 Sucedió mientras escuchaba en RNE una entrevista a su traductora， Ana María Bejarano， en la que describía con pasión como había sido el proceso de traer al español el texto original en hebreo y， en especial， el fin de semana compartido con el autor junto a otros traductores a diferentes lenguas。 Grossman， lejos de desentenderse de su obra Lo primero que pensé al oír hablar de la novela de David Grossman fue «¡Qué buen título！ Ojalá se me ocurrieran títulos tan buenos como este para mis novelas»。 Sucedió mientras escuchaba en RNE una entrevista a su traductora， Ana María Bejarano， en la que describía con pasión como había sido el proceso de traer al español el texto original en hebreo y， en especial， el fin de semana compartido con el autor junto a otros traductores a diferentes lenguas。 Grossman， lejos de desentenderse de su obra una vez publicada， mantiene encuentros con sus traductores para trasladarles los significados precisos y profundos de cada giro o expresión utilizada， de cada metáfora， de cada pieza del puzle， en definitiva， que compone la novela a fin de preservarlos en su mudanza a otras lenguas。Mi segundo pensamiento durante la entrevista admiró a la traductora por tener la posibilidad de compartir de esa forma una obra con su autor。 Y no hablamos de un autor cualquiera， sino de un ganador del Booker y permanente candidato al Nobel。 Un escritor que se toma tantas molestias merece ser leído y La vida juega conmigo es una excelente oportunidad para comenzar a hacerlo。Así fue como la novela llegó a mis manos y ya no pude soltarla hasta leer el último agradecimiento de los recogidos al final de la novela。 Y es que "La vida juega conmigo" es una novela magnífica， que te atrapa y， pese al deseo constante de leer más， te invita a detenerte y releer párrafos enteros para saborear como se merece la cuidada prosa de Grossman。No hay nada en "La vida juega conmigo" que desentono o flaquee。 Su construcción es excepcional。 Sus personajes son tan reales que casi puedes sentir su respiración a tu lado durante la lectura。 Y la trama， inspirada en una historia real， es tan dramática y descarnada como emotiva y profunda。"La vida juega conmigo" narra la historia de una familia judía。 Tres mujeres de tres generaciones distintas marcadas por un acontecimiento terrible producido durante los años posteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial， en los que la extinta Yugoslavia se sacudió el yugo soviético。 La novela recupera un episodio histórico no muy conocido por el gran público: la creación por el gobierno del Mariscal Tito de sus propios gulags， a imagen y semejanza de los soviéticos， para reeducar a sus compatriotas acusados de simpatizar con el comunismo， todo por el bien de la doctrina socialista que le llevó a fundar el movimiento de países no alineados durante los años de la guerra fría。Esas tres mujeres， abuela， madre y nieta， junto con el padre de esta última， hijastro de la primera y pareja de la segunda， viajan desde Israel a Croacia en busca de las respuestas que permitan curar las heridas que llevan décadas abiertas。 Pero， para mí， sobre todo estamos ante una novela acerca del AMOR， así， en mayúsculas。 Amor es lo que liga a los cuatro personajes de esta novela con lazos más fuertes que la sangre。 Y amor es lo que trae al presenta al quinto personaje， el abuelo desaparecido， sobre cuya ausencia gravita， en cierta forma， toda la historia。Y hasta aquí puedo llegar sin desvelaros nada。 No perdáis la ocasión de leer "La vida juega conmigo"。 Una novela como esta es de las que no se olvidan。 。。。more
