Summary

A Clifton Chronicles spinoff – about Detective Warwick。 But this is not a detective story, this is a story about the making of a detective。

Jeffrey Archer's Clifton Chronicles reinvigorated his already-illustrious career to the highest sales level in a decade, and now Archer launches a brand-new family saga tailor-made for Clifton fans: the life story of William Warwick。 William is a new recruit in the London Metropolitan Police Force, and his father is a distinguished judge。 Rather than follow in his father's footsteps, the way his sister has, William has always wanted to be a detective。

This series debut traces William's complicated relationships with his family; the origins of his career; his first mentor, career police officer Fred Yates; his first months on the beat; and his first case as a detective, an investigation into an art theft ring which has continually outsmarted Scotland Yard。 It also introduces the series villains, ruthless art collector Miles Faulkner and his defense attorney, Booth Watson。

As with the Clifton Chronicles, the Warwick novels tell the story of a man, a family, and an era of our times in the way only Jeffrey Archer can。 His legions of fans will be enthralled through each volume, as we follow William's life, through his career, his love life, his family, and the many triumphs and tragedies of each。

Smashed this in 24hours。 Very easy to read, fast paced with entertaining characters。 This is by no means amazing literature but it entertains - the perfect holiday book。 I’ll be back for book two。

Enjoyed it to begin with and then I got bored with it。 I was so excited to read Mr。 Archer again too。 Let down。 :(

Usual good story from Mr Archer。

Loved it。 Reminded me of what I loved about the Clifton Chronicles。 It just fun to read with characters I want to get to kno。 I look forward to the second in the series。 I feel that I get to know England by reading about these characters。 The story is easy to follow and the characters are easy to keep track of。 I just enjoy the writing and the beautiful pictures that Archer creates in my mind。 A detective in England, this is right in my wheel house and kept me interested through the whole story。

A very easy read but not much meat on the bones。 The book reads as more of an introduction to characters that may take on more challenging mysteries in the future。 The pages turned easily, but the brain did not need to do much hard work with this one。

Pretty entertaining!

Entertaining read but a little lacking in mystery, and not much plot development。 I think this was more character development than anything。 Still, I enjoyed it, I generally like Archer’s writing style, and will probably read the others in the series。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I’ve read the entire Clifton Chronicles so I was very excited for this book。 However I don’t think this is the author’s best book but I cannot agree with the author especially on the part where the main character cheats on his girlfriend by rationalising it as something that his girlfriend would have understood。 Lawyers will enjoy the ending of this book as it depicts the courtroom situation where judges are snappy and it’s nerve wrecking as the junior counsel。

Judy

Easy read, at times a little confusing with different characters and different situations。 Not as gripping as most of Archer's previous novels I have read (most of them)。 But I will look for others in the William Warick series。 Easy read, at times a little confusing with different characters and different situations。 Not as gripping as most of Archer's previous novels I have read (most of them)。 But I will look for others in the William Warick series。 。。。more

Just love all that Jeffrey Archer writes。 Can’t wait to read the second in the William Warwick series

The story is not that bad, but it's easy to guess what will happen, there's a lot of cliché and the jumps on the story move too fast。 The story is not that bad, but it's easy to guess what will happen, there's a lot of cliché and the jumps on the story move too fast。 。。。more

Just do not know where to start with any form of review of this book by the disgraced former Peer of the Realm and ex-con。 William Warwick is a privileged middle class boy, the son of a leading barrister who decides he wants to join the police。 He takes a degree in Art History and joins the Metropolitan Police。 On the beat, he ends up stabbed and his mentor dead。 Before you know it he is taken on as a detective and is immediately at Scotland Yard and solving all the crimes。The character of "Good Just do not know where to start with any form of review of this book by the disgraced former Peer of the Realm and ex-con。 William Warwick is a privileged middle class boy, the son of a leading barrister who decides he wants to join the police。 He takes a degree in Art History and joins the Metropolitan Police。 On the beat, he ends up stabbed and his mentor dead。 Before you know it he is taken on as a detective and is immediately at Scotland Yard and solving all the crimes。The character of "Goody Two Shoes" Warwick is unbelievably awful, you just cannot see him surviving in the mess room。 He is just so good that he should wear a Superman outfit。 The writing style jumps about from one case to another without any structure and just leaves the reader realing as to exactly where the cases stand so much so that they are actually mixed up on some of the final pages。Dreadful。 Gets two stars as I did actually read to the end。 。。。more

Excellent on a number of levels。 I found the story slow but readable from the start, then gradually it build up to a great finale。 The court and various details of the police, courts that I am personally acquainted with were presented -highlighting the good, the bad and the ugly。 I look forward to reading the next in the series。

Debra

Tedious and cliched plot lines, well familiar to Archer readers, along with stock characters and cheesy dialogue。 And yet I’ll probably read the next one anyway just because I want to see how the story plays out。 Definitely ‘junk food’ reading; serves its purpose but leaves you unsatisfied and maybe regretting it。

I thought it a fun read with a few loose strands to make me want to read the next detective Warwick book to see how the tickler strands play out。

He is a good writer but I got the impression the book was written quickly without much editing and reviewing。 Will give the series a second chance with book 2。

Classical Archer style filled with light suspense, surprises and simple emotions, that make even an ordinary day in the story an extraordinary one。 Balanced modernity with good old values in characters and the plot。 Enjoyed the master storyteller's narrative after longtime。 But not as touching as Kane and Abel。。。。Overall an excellent read。 Classical Archer style filled with light suspense, surprises and simple emotions, that make even an ordinary day in the story an extraordinary one。 Balanced modernity with good old values in characters and the plot。 Enjoyed the master storyteller's narrative after longtime。 But not as touching as Kane and Abel。。。。Overall an excellent read。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 There is no doubt that Jefferey Archer is a master story teller。 It almost sounds cliched。 But is it one among his best? I find it difficult to answer that。 I almost gave a 4 * but for the 2nd half of the story。 I must confess I may be one of the few who haven’t read his Clifton Chronicles series。 (I know what I’m going to read after finishing this review!)The introduction to the main character is very apt, fast moving and before you know it the story dives into the key plot。 All good so far! The story then winds itself till the last 100 pages where two high profile trials happen at the same time。 Archer keeps us rapt with attention by unravelling the plot in a staged manner。 What was disappointing was the matter of fact coincidences that just pop up。 I almost decided it would be 2* when the end (the genius of Archer is evident) just managed that final applauding moment。 The Writing is brisk in most places。 The complex relationship between the protagonist and his idealistic lawyer father is explored in the initial parts but never probed beyond the surface。 A couple of loose ends prevail in the end! The sister’s character could have been handled giving more depth and space! I hope the rest of the series is a worthy read! 。。。more
