Summary

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
No Solicitations
No Visitors
No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere。。。 else。

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children。

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back。 The things she’s experienced。。。 they change a person。 The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well。 And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world。

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home。 There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter。

No matter the cost。

I loved the idea of this story, and the characters drew me in - I wanted to get to know more about them and the worlds they longed to escape back to。I do wish the story had been longer, but that’s what the sequels are for!

This went darker than I expected and … I loved it? This is perfection。

Really good twist on the children's fantasy story trope。 Pretty dark and creepy at moments。 But also funny。 Not a kid's children's story at all though。 Really good twist on the children's fantasy story trope。 Pretty dark and creepy at moments。 But also funny。 Not a kid's children's story at all though。 。。。more

3。5。 A quick murder mystery portal fantasy with a strong premise and enjoyable characters。 What's happening to the kids who returned to our basic world after mystical adventures in magical lands? What would they risk to go back? My friends kept on telling me to read this book, suggesting I would like it。 Yet, hesitated as thought I wouldn’t like it, and I was right。 It was too short, very woke characters and when one of the characters Sumi is found dead, it only takes a few pages to learn who the killer was。 Yet, love the concept of the story - a boarding school for children who have had the experience of travelling to a fantasy world, and need to recover in the really world。Miserably, no wizard of Oz rainbow stories he My friends kept on telling me to read this book, suggesting I would like it。 Yet, hesitated as thought I wouldn’t like it, and I was right。 It was too short, very woke characters and when one of the characters Sumi is found dead, it only takes a few pages to learn who the killer was。 Yet, love the concept of the story - a boarding school for children who have had the experience of travelling to a fantasy world, and need to recover in the really world。Miserably, no wizard of Oz rainbow stories here。 Instead, a gothic depressing tale。 Yet, many people, seem to like this sort of gloomy tales, as this novella has been very popular over the last few years。 Will, not read the next in the series。 That’s all I have to say! 。。。more

DNF: I actually really liked the premise for the first third of the story, and there’s no denying the author is exceptional。 It was just too grim and strange and dark to be enjoyable。 I love fantasy and fairyland, but this isn’t that。 This is a bleak and pessimistic take on escapism, where the alternative is misery and desperation。 There’s much better fantasy fiction to read。

surprise, surprise。 this seems like a "either you love it or you don't" book based on the review i've been reading。 but glad to report that this is the kind of ✨ whimsy and dark and weird ✨ that i'm into apparently surprise, surprise。 this seems like a "either you love it or you don't" book based on the review i've been reading。 but glad to report that this is the kind of ✨ whimsy and dark and weird ✨ that i'm into apparently 。。。more

I heard a lot of buzz about this book。 A lot of people I follow did read this and enjoyed it a lot。 It's short but have everything it needs to be in。 Love mystery aspect off-book like I didn't expect that a all。 Actually, the entire book was definitely different from how I imagined I would be like。 We see how people can be in this different world and how there were gone for a long but then they come back and people don't believe him and they send them to this boarding school so that they can be I heard a lot of buzz about this book。 A lot of people I follow did read this and enjoyed it a lot。 It's short but have everything it needs to be in。 Love mystery aspect off-book like I didn't expect that a all。 Actually, the entire book was definitely different from how I imagined I would be like。 We see how people can be in this different world and how there were gone for a long but then they come back and people don't believe him and they send them to this boarding school so that they can be fixed。 How they want to go back to that other world more than anything because that there home。 。。。more

I like the idea of this book but unfortunately, I can't give this more praise than the worldbuilding (the idea of everyone having a doorway to our perfect reality)。 I am writing this review as a person who longed for death for over 15 years with multiple suicide attempts throughout that time。 The main character Nancy spent some time in her ideal world: the Hall of the Dead, surrounded by the dead。 Nancy spends the entire book longing to go back to the dead。 In my opinion, this book romanticizes I like the idea of this book but unfortunately, I can't give this more praise than the worldbuilding (the idea of everyone having a doorway to our perfect reality)。 I am writing this review as a person who longed for death for over 15 years with multiple suicide attempts throughout that time。 The main character Nancy spent some time in her ideal world: the Hall of the Dead, surrounded by the dead。 Nancy spends the entire book longing to go back to the dead。 In my opinion, this book romanticizes suicide: a girl longing for death。 The book ends with (view spoiler)[her returning to the Hall of the Dead (meaning she was successful in her attempt to die)。 (hide spoiler)] I'm giving the book 2 stars because I enjoyed the worldbuilding but had I read this years ago, I might not be alive today as I relate too much to Nancy, and if she successfully went to the Hall of the Dead, then that means I could too。And don't get me started on the asexual representation 。。。 。。。more

My heart loved this story! This was a fantasy that just felt to me like it was describing a reality on some level, and it really did speak to the heart。 The premise seemed to dangle so many intriguing possibilities。 But I kind of wish it was better fleshed out than I found it to be。 I also did not find the central plot involving the mystery to be very satisfying, after I suspected it to be rather mundane and it confirmed my suspicions! Great premise, though I could have done without the horrors bits。

Where is my doorway? Interesting take on the magical kids at boarding school trope。 Kudos for trans and ace representation。

3。5 starsOriginal idea, but I think it could have been developped a bit deeper than that。 On the other hand, this was a quick read and maybe making it larger would have removed some of the freshness of the idea。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This one sounded promising, but wasn't for me。 Set in a school that accepts children who've returned from various "elsewheres" (think Wonderland), can't go back, but can't fit in, the premise was great。 It just never hit its stride, with repetitive dialog, extremely creepy kids, and a murder mystery that doesn't make much sense。 I liked Nancy, the new girl who belonged in the Halls of the Dead, but her happy ending just "happened" without much rhyme or reason and left me cold。 This one sounded promising, but wasn't for me。 Set in a school that accepts children who've returned from various "elsewheres" (think Wonderland), can't go back, but can't fit in, the premise was great。 It just never hit its stride, with repetitive dialog, extremely creepy kids, and a murder mystery that doesn't make much sense。 I liked Nancy, the new girl who belonged in the Halls of the Dead, but her happy ending just "happened" without much rhyme or reason and left me cold。 。。。more

Finally got around to a reread! Still good, this one。 Burned through it in a day and was able to better appreciate McGuire's clever foreshadowing thanks to the gift of hindsight。 Also appreciated McGuire's wicked way with sensory and figurative language。 The first few paragraphs of Chapter One? Marvelous。 I'm less appreciative of some of the more 'snarky' characters, who tend to come out as heavy-handed rather than amusing, and the ending, which felt far too abrupt。 The book, being a novella, is Finally got around to a reread! I really enjoyed this story!! The characters were great!! It reminds me of House on the cerulean sea, another favorite of mine。 I am definitely going to continue the series。
