Summary

Following his acclaimed bestseller Purple Cane Road, James Lee Burke returns with a triumphant tour de force。

Set in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, home to celebrities seeking to escape the pressures of public life, as well as to xenophobes dedicated to establishing a bulkhead of patriotic paranoia, Burke’s novel features Billy Bob Holland, former Texas Ranger and now a Texas-based lawyer, who has come to Big Sky Country for some fishing and ends up helping out an old friend in trouble。

And big trouble it is, not just for his friend but for Billy Bob himself—in the form of Wyatt Dixon, a recent prison parolee sworn to kill Billy Bob as revenge for both his imprisonment and his sister's death, both of which he blames on the former Texas lawman。 As the mysteries multiply and the body count mounts, the reader is drawn deeper into the tortured mind of Billy Bob Holland, a complex hero tormented by the mistakes of his past and driven to make things—all things—right。 But beneath the guise of justice for the weak and downtrodden lies a tendency for violence that at times becomes more terrifying than the danger he is trying to eradicate。

As USA TODAY noted in discussing the parallels between Billy Bob Holland and Burke’s other popular series hero, David Robicheaux, “Robicheaux and Holland are two of a kind, white-hat heroes whose essential goodness doesn’t keep them from fighting back。 The two series describe different landscapes, but one theme remains constant: the inner conflict when upright men are provoked into violence in defense of hearth, home, women, and children。 There are plenty of parallels。 Billy Bob is an ex-Texas Ranger; Dave is an ex-New Orleans cop。 Dave battles alcoholism and the ghosts of Vietnam; Billy Bob actually sees ghosts, including the Ranger he accidentally gunned down。。。。But most of all, both protagonists hold a vision of a pure and simple life。”

In Bitterroot, with its rugged and vivid setting, its intricate plot, and a set of remarkable, unforgettable characters, and crafted with the lyrical prose and the elegiac tone that have inspired many critics to compare him to William Faulkner, James Lee Burke has written a thriller destined to surpass the success of his previous novels。

Some really great tough guy dialogue and well written bucolic scenes are marred by an overwhelming amount of filler and bullshit。

Billy Bob Thornton has traveled north to Montana to visit old friend Doc and his daughter。 Amid the scenic beauty are kooks and nuts from environmentalists to bikers to militias。 When a biker rapes Doc's teenage daughter and then turns up dead, Doc is the immediate #1 suspect, and even Billy Bob's not so sure he's innocent。 And a recently released convict is looking for Billy Bob to avenge his sister's capital punishment for killing her own children。 Bad guys and danger abound。 Billy Bob Thornton has traveled north to Montana to visit old friend Doc and his daughter。 Amid the scenic beauty are kooks and nuts from environmentalists to bikers to militias。 When a biker rapes Doc's teenage daughter and then turns up dead, Doc is the immediate #1 suspect, and even Billy Bob's not so sure he's innocent。 And a recently released convict is looking for Billy Bob to avenge his sister's capital punishment for killing her own children。 Bad guys and danger abound。 。。。more

Like his other Billy Bob Holland books, this is a well written story of a small town lawyer of good character。 Enough depth for it to be real, no superhuman feats, just (mostly) good sense。 In this tale he defends an assortment of characters。 Of course the bad get their do and the good move on from their traumas。 A good listen, very well narrated by Stechschulte。

William

Interesting cast of characters, each one has a lust for self-destructive behavior。

James Lee Burke is one of my all-time favorite authors。 I have read all of his books at least once and his writing never fails to entertain me。 The Dave Robicheaux series is my favorite, but the books involving Billy Bob Holland are pretty good。Billy Bob has gone to Montana for a fishing vacation while visiting his friend, Doc Voss。 Doc is an avowed environmentalist and is involved in trying to stop mining in the area。 Add in white supremacist thugs, a famous but troubled author and his actress James Lee Burke is one of my all-time favorite authors。 I have read all of his books at least once and his writing never fails to entertain me。 The Dave Robicheaux series is my favorite, but the books involving Billy Bob Holland are pretty good。Billy Bob has gone to Montana for a fishing vacation while visiting his friend, Doc Voss。 Doc is an avowed environmentalist and is involved in trying to stop mining in the area。 Add in white supremacist thugs, a famous but troubled author and his actress wife, a few mafia types and federal agents and you have a mix of disparate characters that will keep you engaged。Mr。 Burke's writing is full of amazing prose and great descriptions that make you feel like you are seeing the characters and the locations, not just reading about them。 This book is full of angst, violence and anger as well as emotion。 Several of the characters suffer from PTSD due to things in their past and their actions are often fueled by this。I had read this book years ago, so when a friend gave me CD's of the audiobook, I decided to listen。 The narrator was perfect for this book and I enjoyed this second read of the book more because of his performance。If you have never read any of Burke's books, I would suggest starting with one of the first in series so that you can fully appreciate the characters。 If you like your thrillers gritty, full of damaged characters and no-holds barred dialogue, give this one a chance。 。。。more

This was my first of every James Lee Burke novel written。 His dialogue is spot-on, his prose rolls like a cannonball and slows to a mellow tempo when needed。 And the depths to which he allows the reader to discover the characters。。。 just a little bit at a time。。。 is common throughout his extensive library of fiction。 Maybe Burke is an ex-drinker。。。 I don't know。。。 but he doesn't hit you over the head with it (Think Parker)。 In fact, there is no better way to read one of his novels than with a tu This was my first of every James Lee Burke novel written。 His dialogue is spot-on, his prose rolls like a cannonball and slows to a mellow tempo when needed。 And the depths to which he allows the reader to discover the characters。。。 just a little bit at a time。。。 is common throughout his extensive library of fiction。 Maybe Burke is an ex-drinker。。。 I don't know。。。 but he doesn't hit you over the head with it (Think Parker)。 In fact, there is no better way to read one of his novels than with a tumbler packed with shaved ice and four fingers of Jim Beam。 I don't even feel guilty about drinking around him。 Unlike many authors who use a pretentious sledgehammer to let you know they ONLY drink 23-year Pappy Van Winkle or smoke Cohiba Behikes in a 57 ring-gauge are full of shit。 A shot of Jack with a sweating, icy-cold bottle of Jax or Pearl from a galvanized livestock tank filled with ice does just the trick。 You'll get into Billy Bob and on his side, and his son is an interesting character--but nobody is as boldly in-your-face, fearless, ugly and morally repugnant as Wyatt Dixon。 And fuck if I can't help rooting for the guy。 The only tip I have is to read the series in order。 。。。more

I picked this up because I had watched In the Electric Mist and wanted to read it but found this one instead。 Another ghost haunting our main character, and while I liked most of the characters, I fear the story fell apart in the third third。 The connection to the Oklahoma City bombing was not resolved, hints of other issues only stayed that, and the motivations for anybody doing anything got really confused for me, but the first thirds I enjoyed。

I have read just about everything that James Lee Burke has written and I never tire of his work。 He has a way of adding small details to his scenes that are described in such a way as to make them magic。 He has the ability to plumb the depths of the human soul and mine the evil that lurks therein。 Bitterroot is no exception。 The Billy Bob Holland series has the same smooth flowing, easy to read style as Burke's Dave Robicheaux series。 Like Robicheaux, Billy Bob is flawed but his heart is, for th I have read just about everything that James Lee Burke has written and I never tire of his work。 He has a way of adding small details to his scenes that are described in such a way as to make them magic。 He has the ability to plumb the depths of the human soul and mine the evil that lurks therein。 Bitterroot is no exception。 The Billy Bob Holland series has the same smooth flowing, easy to read style as Burke's Dave Robicheaux series。 Like Robicheaux, Billy Bob is flawed but his heart is, for the most part, in the right place。 Bitterroot finds Billy Bob in Montana attempting to help out an old friend who has found himself in a bit of a tight spot。 The more Billy Bob investigates, the more the plot twists and the more embroiled he becomes in the politics of the area - both local and beyond。 As is normal with Burke, there is the always present war between good and evil and the plot twists that keep the reader guessing until the end。 James Lee Burke could make a telephone directory compelling。 This is a top notch read。 。。。more

When you read a new author, who has written books in a series, how do you pick which book to read? The first in the series? The highest-rated? The one with the most interesting plot? I've done each! I tend to use the latter two methods most。 Bitterroot is my first James Lee Burke novel。 It was the third Billy Bob Holland story, written in 2001。 The story, as you might guess from the title, takes place in (modern day) Montana - specifically the Missoula area。 The plot set-up is this: Billy Bob, a When you read a new author, who has written books in a series, how do you pick which book to read? I tend to use the latter two methods most。 Bitterroot is my first James Lee Burke novel。 It was the third Billy Bob Holland story, written in 2001。 The story, as you might guess from the title, takes place in (modern day) Montana - specifically the Missoula area。 The plot set-up is this: Billy Bob, a former Texas Ranger who is now an attorney, is visiting his old Texas friend Doc Voss there。 Billy Bob gets a courtesy call from the local sheriff to notify him that an ex-con named Wyatt Dixon, just released from a Texas prison, left behind a list of six intended murder victims, and Billy Bob is one of them。 Throughout the story, Billy Bob sees and talks to visions of his old ranger friend who he accidentally killed in a raid in Mexico。 Doc Voss is a hard-boiled Vietnam Vet who challenges anyone who disturbs the peace of Missoula, including bikers! We've all noticed that women and older men (like Doc) can get away with sassing badasses sometimes。 Young men - not so much。 Now Wyatt Dixon is seen working in town as a rodeo clown, and wastes no time threatening Billy Bob。 And away we go。。。The constantly ominous feeling of menace is like John D。 MacDonald's Cape Fear on steroids。 Burke's writing contains outstanding imagery again and again。 It is clear that the Montana resident loves his home state。 He also writes extremely amusing and reasonably believeable dialogue。 He has what attracts me most to a writer - deep understanding of the vagaries of human nature。 I found this book to read like a pleasant combination of Elmore Leonard and C。 J。 Box, two of my favorites。 However, while Burke's writing is imaginative and poetic, the complexity of the plot and the similarity of the numerous bad guys made it difficult for me to follow the action。 You'd better be ready to keep a boatload of evil characters with similar M。 O。's straight in your mind。 The narration is a combination of first person (Billy Bob) and third person omniscient。 That can work fine, but when the writer combines both in one scene, it does not work! Even though in my opinion C。 J。 Box is not the writer that Burke is, I'm going to stick with him。 I like the less complicated stories he puts forth better。 。。。more

Oh yeah, there's the psycho rodeo cowboy who blames Billy Bob for the death of his sister。 And more。 Most people in James Lee Burke's books are haunted, Billy Bob more so than most: the ghost of L。 Q。 Navarro, who Billy Bob accidentally killed years back, occasionally pops up to discuss ongoing events。 Probably more than anyone else I read, Burke is given to colorful vividness: That night dry lightning rippled through the thunderclouds that sealed the Blackfoot Valley。 The wind was up and the trees shook along the riverbank and I coulds see pine needles scattering on the surface of the water。 I walked through Doc's fields, restless and irritable and discontent, a nameless fear trembling like a crystal goblet in my breast。 The Appaloosa and thoroughbred in Doc's pasture nickered in the darkness and I could smell river dam and pine gum and wildflowers and wet stone and woodsmoke in the air, as though the four seasons of the year had come together at once and formed a dead zone under clouds that pulsed with light but gave no rain。 I wished for earsplitting thunder to roll through the mountains or high winds to tear at barn roofs。 I wished for the hand of God to destroy the airless vacuum in which I seemed to be caught。 You are there。 Burke also peppers his books with dialogue that nobody in my experience actually speaks, but one kind of wishes they did。 Here's the sheriff, put out at Billy Bob: "I think your mama put you outdoors before the glue was dry, son。 I really do," he replied。 Good stuff。 。。。more

I love a good mystery, but I love great prose even better。 James Lee Burke takes both and puts them in a setting where you feel it all。 This one had some colorful antagonists, that's for sure。 They are downright sleazy, with a major ick factor, yet somewhere in the telling, Burke makes you see a tiny bit of humanity in them。 Not much, but enough。 And the protagonist has enough flaws to show he can be his own worst enemy。 That's the type of story I like。 But the setting。。。。。I really want to go to I love a good mystery, but I love great prose even better。 James Lee Burke takes both and puts them in a setting where you feel it all。 This one had some colorful antagonists, that's for sure。 They are downright sleazy, with a major ick factor, yet somewhere in the telling, Burke makes you see a tiny bit of humanity in them。 Not much, but enough。 And the protagonist has enough flaws to show he can be his own worst enemy。 That's the type of story I like。 But the setting。。。。。I really want to go to Montana now。 Burke has all the aspects of a good mystery that makes me want to keep reading into the night。 。 。 yet stay in this world he created a long, long time。 。。。more

This book could make you hightail it to Missoula, Montana, so easily if it were not for all the violence in it。 There were many likeable characters but the evil ones terrified me。 Having been to Missoula this year, I loved the beautiful descriptions of the countryside。 James Lee Burke is definitely a wordsmith in crime fiction。

In the late 90's I was hooked on the novels of James Lee Burke, particularly the ones featuring his best-known creation Dave Robicheaux。 The last one I read was Cadillac Jukebox and that was ages ago, so when I went into 2nd and Charles a few weeks ago looking for a few guaranteed page-turners to pick up for a steal, I decided to give Bitterroot a shot since I had never read any Burke novels featuring his former Texas Ranger-turned-lawyer hero Billy Bob Holland。 Needless to say, I found Bitterro In the late 90's I was hooked on the novels of James Lee Burke, particularly the ones featuring his best-known creation Dave Robicheaux。 The last one I read was Cadillac Jukebox and that was ages ago, so when I went into 2nd and Charles a few weeks ago looking for a few guaranteed page-turners to pick up for a steal, I decided to give Bitterroot a shot since I had never read any Burke novels featuring his former Texas Ranger-turned-lawyer hero Billy Bob Holland。 Needless to say, I found Bitterroot to be an intense and compelling crime drama with Holland leaving his native Texas behind for an extended vacation with an old friend in rural Montana and becoming ensnared in an escalating clusterfuck of criminality centered around a vengeance-minded ex-con with the charm of a cowpoke and the temperament of a cobra, a right-wing militia leader, a Mafia thug with a dude ranch, a renowned author with a serious drinking problem and a few salacious secrets, and more。 Things get crazy, dark, and often violent, but the true joy of reading a Burke novel is enjoying the poetic dialogue exchanges between a colorful array of memorable characters and immersing yourself in the writer's gift for atmospheric world-building。 Hard to put down, absolutely recommended for crime novel fans in the mood for some down home ass-kicking, moral dilemmas, and more than a few human embodiments of all that is good and evil in this world。 。。。more

James Lee Burke’s novels have always contained a strong strain, almost an advocacy, of the ‘right’ to use violence to counter violent criminality。 So much for the rule of law then…In ‘Bitterroot’ Burke takes this ethos much further than in any of his previous novels。 The plot line in this novel is thin。 The story is padded by Burke’s almost lyrical (and unending) paean to the Montana landscape。 I am almost certain that the landscape deserves this, though not perhaps in a crime novel。 Apart from James Lee Burke’s novels have always contained a strong strain, almost an advocacy, of the ‘right’ to use violence to counter violent criminality。 So much for the rule of law then…In ‘Bitterroot’ Burke takes this ethos much further than in any of his previous novels。 The plot line in this novel is thin。 The story is padded by Burke’s almost lyrical (and unending) paean to the Montana landscape。 I am almost certain that the landscape deserves this, though not perhaps in a crime novel。 Apart from that, Burke mixes a bit of native Indian mysticism, his usual attitude towards organised crime figures and small town constabulary, some hard to believe sex scenes and a very large amount of macho violence in a mish-mash of a story。 I read this mostly on a 14 hour flight across the Indian Ocean。 It was a toss-up to decide which was the more inedible – this rubbish of a book or the airline food。 I think the airline food won – narrowly。 。。。more
