Summary

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the "spice" melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness。 Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for。。。

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul's family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined。 And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream。

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction。

This was difficult to read。 The world-building is impressive, but it was so complicated I had trouble following the plot。 I’m not sure if it’s a better reading strategy to go back when you don’t understand or remember something, or to just go with the flow and absorb what you can。 I read it slow and tried to remember all the characters and world-building stuff。 But that made it feel like a chore and I didn’t really get into the story。 It did have moments when I loved it; but there were more time This was difficult to read。 The world-building is impressive, but it was so complicated I had trouble following the plot。 I’m not sure if it’s a better reading strategy to go back when you don’t understand or remember something, or to just go with the flow and absorb what you can。 I read it slow and tried to remember all the characters and world-building stuff。 But that made it feel like a chore and I didn’t really get into the story。 It did have moments when I loved it; but there were more times when I was bored or confused。The way some people talk about how they love the book make me feel like I read it wrong or missed something。 I like to have a few books going at the same time, but maybe if I was fully absorbed in this I would like it better? I’d like to understand how people can read a book like this and understand everything without stopping。I am interested enough to be excited about the movie though。 I think I’ll even check out the 1984 movie to see what they did with it。 。。。more

Throw in some religion, politics, ecology, technology, and most importantly a kangaroo mouse to create this book。 What can i write that hasn't already been written about this book and its series!?! I didn't know about the book until I saw the 1984 movie and I was in love!! ohCaladan, the weird twins, the sentient machines, the scary Alia lol。。 I really enjoyed the audiobook and the different narrators! Like a verbal play for my senses!! This is my first, and possibly only, Goodreads review。 I don't usually throw out my opinions to the chaos of the internet, but I'm hoping that writing out my thoughts will help me understand how I feel about Dune。I found this book very difficult。 Constant POV changes, sometimes within a single paragraph, made it hard to follow along with who was speaking or thinking。 All SF/F has jargon and new concepts to explain so the reader can feel immersed in the world, but at no point did Herbert really b This is my first, and possibly only, Goodreads review。 I don't usually throw out my opinions to the chaos of the internet, but I'm hoping that writing out my thoughts will help me understand how I feel about Dune。I found this book very difficult。 Constant POV changes, sometimes within a single paragraph, made it hard to follow along with who was speaking or thinking。 All SF/F has jargon and new concepts to explain so the reader can feel immersed in the world, but at no point did Herbert really bother to extrapolate on anything。 I was 300 pages in before any systems (i。e。 spice, politics, mysticism) was actually explained。 Additionally, I found the narration extremely dry and technical。 The reader is left to figure out much about the world on their own through repetition of ideas - again, like all SF/F - but it was done with so little description or context that it's difficult to actually imagine the physical world at times。 Odd time skips and deus-ex-machina style revelations made it very hard to feel any sense of immediacy for the characters or their predicaments。 The book spent so much time setting up a plot - that ultimately went nowhere - that it forgot to explain why the reader should care about it。 Add in unfulfilled characters and some bad - truly, horrendously bad - dialog and you've got an extremely ponderous read ahead of you。All that being said, the world Herbert creates is very cool。 Not the characters or the great houses, per se, but the actual planet of Arrakis。 Herbert does an excellent job of allowing the the mystery and strangeness of the desert planet to shine through on multiple occasions, and the political and military intrigues that surround it can be very interesting。 Herbert's world building is top notch here, and it's not hard to imagine such things playing out today in similar circumstances。The cons very much outweigh the pros for me, but there is a good chance even a casual reader of SF/F will find something to enjoy in this book。 It just might be buried under too much sand to make finding it worth the effort。Pros:Very interesting world building, cool ecological and political developments。Cons:Bad plot, bad dialog, bad characters, difficult narrative to follow。 。。。more

I like the story, and I like the world a lot。 But it never felt high stakes, or like anyone was ever in danger。 There was no climax。 The whole thing was just vaguely monotone。Lots of great quotes though。 And I think the new movie will be fun。

I really do not understand how people like this book。 It's a collection of moments in between action like you're reading a microfiche。 Fast forwarding through important scenes just to have flat dialog before jumping past anything important。 I really do not understand how people like this book。 It's a collection of moments in between action like you're reading a microfiche。 Fast forwarding through important scenes just to have flat dialog before jumping past anything important。 。。。more

A masterpiece。Frank Herbert created a world that has you as a reader confused out of your mind in the first hundred pages, but makes you fall in love with the characters and the differences to our reality。 Reading this book I thought I could smell the spice, feel the drought and wind of the desserts and the pride of the accomplishments of characters。 But nonetheless, it was sooo confusing at times and hard to hold my attention。

One of the most captivating scientific fiction novel, that shows its age the more you read it。 The slow pace sets the right mood for connecting with the characters and the environment, holding you in the grips at the political interactions。 The book doesn't catch the level of contemporary political readings or the character arcs, but the influence of the landscape and mystery surrounding the environment has inspired several sci-fi novels。 The ending feels rushed, with no particular clever tactic One of the most captivating scientific fiction novel, that shows its age the more you read it。 The slow pace sets the right mood for connecting with the characters and the environment, holding you in the grips at the political interactions。 The book doesn't catch the level of contemporary political readings or the character arcs, but the influence of the landscape and mystery surrounding the environment has inspired several sci-fi novels。 The ending feels rushed, with no particular clever tactic used or mentioned in the wars。 Sometimes it hits the spot of enjoyment the right way with its narration and sometimes it misses due to its age。 Strangely both protagonist and antagonist feel bland and distant by the end。 。。。more

The best book I've ever read。 At first, I was kinda unsure about it。 As it had a whole universe going on I didn't know if it would be worthy。 What a freakin journey that was。 Lots of people told me the first 200 pages or so were really difficult but not at all。 An advice I can give you is to check the new Dune trailers。 Those imageries really help out to understand how does specific things look like。 For sure in my top 3 favorite books。 Don't be scared of it, at all。 The best book I've ever read。 At first, I was kinda unsure about it。 As it had a whole universe going on I didn't know if it would be worthy。 What a freakin journey that was。 Lots of people told me the first 200 pages or so were really difficult but not at all。 An advice I can give you is to check the new Dune trailers。 Those imageries really help out to understand how does specific things look like。 For sure in my top 3 favorite books。 Don't be scared of it, at all。 。。。more

A classic sci fi I'd been meaning to read for ages, this didn't disappoint。The world building was complex and snappy and as full of mundane realities as sci fi grandiose drama。Although the story took part over three books - it felt more like two parts- that in which Jessica was our main character and than in which we followed Paul。Jessica certainly felt like the more relatable of the two。This meant- while the second half of the book was more action packed, I found it less gripping, simply becaus A classic sci fi I'd been meaning to read for ages, this didn't disappoint。The world building was complex and snappy and as full of mundane realities as sci fi grandiose drama。Although the story took part over three books - it felt more like two parts- that in which Jessica was our main character and than in which we followed Paul。Jessica certainly felt like the more relatable of the two。This meant- while the second half of the book was more action packed, I found it less gripping, simply because I felt less immersed in the characters struggles。 I also wished the variety of perspectives the first half provided was maintained more in the second half of the book, with a chance to explore key figures like Stilgar and Chani。 It would make the fremen a little more well rounded- and stop their portrayal from straying into the trope of the 'noble savage' which it did at times。Neverthless, I will certainly be reading the next book 。。。more

Great novel with some amazing world-building, but sometimes critical events were covered so briefly that it almost seemed like I was reading an abridged version。

WHAT A BOOK!One of the best books I've read this year, a solid epic science-fiction with an undertone of politics, religion, philosophy, ecology, colonialism and more! Herbert did a great job in creating this fictional world to develop a stirring plot and discover important notions that should not be overseen。I loved it the way I love 2001:A Space Odyssey and Doctor Who, they are amazing on their own, but feel more groundbreaking and epic when you consider the year they were created, miles ahead WHAT A BOOK!One of the best books I've read this year, a solid epic science-fiction with an undertone of politics, religion, philosophy, ecology, colonialism and more! Dune manages to do so many different things really well。 The characters are magnetic (if you enjoy a bit of melodramatic excess), the author limits the narrative perspective to brilliant effect to both reveal character and to give complicated events a tight focus, and I thought the book's reputation for "world-building" is richly deserved。 On that final point, I'd emphasize how little verbiage the narrative expends on explaining the world and its rules。 Readers get to progressively discover how Dune manages to do so many different things really well。 The characters are magnetic (if you enjoy a bit of melodramatic excess), the author limits the narrative perspective to brilliant effect to both reveal character and to give complicated events a tight focus, and I thought the book's reputation for "world-building" is richly deserved。 On that final point, I'd emphasize how little verbiage the narrative expends on explaining the world and its rules。 Readers get to progressively discover how the world works through strategic presentations of information, often folded into the action。 This makes for a fun and fast read。 Little wonder the book is so beloved–– there is so much to potentially discuss here。 I'll limit myself to just a few of my favorite aspects–– I loved the psychedelic visions which became so central to the drama of the book's final third。 After a middle section largely anchored in straightforward action, these time-bending passages brought the narrative into truly bizarre and interesting territory。 I also loved the author's serious attention to peasant insurgency and guerrilla tactics, as well as the meticulous details presented in the combat scenes。 At the end of the day, Dune is not a novel about overturning an empire so much as it is one about how to seize power within it。 So the revolutionary politics that Herbert is flirting with are only ever a flirtation。 But the rushed chaos of the final two chapters aside, what a compelling and persuasive game of political maneuvering it is! I had such a great time reading Dune。 。。。more

Although when I start reading I wasn’t getting the story, not connecting with the characters。 I just had to keep reading, I totally liked it。 It takes time to get into this futuristic world but I highly recommend it。 I couldn’t stop reading for the last part。

Finally! Finished! It's certainly been a wild ride, jumping from physical book to audiobook to ebook and then back again over a good year。 Well worth the read, though, and with an ending that has me eyeing my copy of Dune Messiah on my bookshelf。 Finally! The intro was a bit dragging, and I wouldn't get some parts of the book if I had not looked over again。 I liked the setting and characters in the story and loved how Paul try to fit in the society。 The book might have been a much better rating if I reread it in the future。 The intro was a bit dragging, and I wouldn't get some parts of the book if I had not looked over again。 I liked the setting and characters in the story and loved how Paul try to fit in the society。 The book might have been a much better rating if I reread it in the future。 。。。more
