Summary

Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here

David Copperfield is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy & impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist。 Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora; & the magnificently impecunious Micawber, one of literature’s great comic creations。
In David Copperfield—the novel he described as his “favorite child”—Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of his most exuberant & enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy & comedy in equal measure。
Originally published as a monthly serial, from 4/1849 to 11/1850。

I feel like if I hadn't watched (and ADORED) The Personal History of David Copperfield before reading this book, I would have enjoyed it a lot more。 But that movie totally ruined me。 It made every character ten billion times more charming and interesting and likeable (although, I will say, book Uriah was definitely creepier than movie Uriah, much as I love Ben Wishaw and his version of the character - SUCH good casting btw, though, geez louise)。 Agnes was a witty, delightful DREAM in the movie a I feel like if I hadn't watched (and ADORED) The Personal History of David Copperfield before reading this book, I would have enjoyed it a lot more。 But that movie totally ruined me。 It made every character ten billion times more charming and interesting and likeable (although, I will say, book Uriah was definitely creepier than movie Uriah, much as I love Ben Wishaw and his version of the character - SUCH good casting btw, though, geez louise)。 Agnes was a witty, delightful DREAM in the movie and kind of a meek, subdued, background player in the book。 David was effervescent and bursting with creative genius right from the get, which I thought was a much better origin story for him than Dickens actually gets into re: his childhood (and no, that's not just my massive crush on Dev Patel speaking, what on earth are you talking about)。 PETER CAPALDI'S ABSOLUTELY BATSHIT MR。 MICAWBER ARE YOU KIDDING。 Don't even get me started on Tilda。 Whoever cast this should be in charge of Hollywood as a whole。Regardless, I just had way more fun with it。 Which isn't Chuck's fault。 He did still come through in some places, like this one:I cannot call to mind where or when, in my childhood, I had seen a stained glass window in a church。 Nor do I recollect its subject。 But I know that when I saw her turn round, in the grave light of the old staircase, and wait for us, above, I thought of that window; and I associated something of its tranquil brightness with Agnes Wickfield ever afterwards。 I mean。 Stunning。 That's so, so lovely。 Also, you know what, as much as I was lamenting Agnes's portrayal in the book, I really don't think he gets enough credit for how well he writes his female characters。 Whether they're villainous or angelic or any of the multiple shades in between, they're always the ones I think about most when I finish one of his stories。 There's a respect and honor there, in the crafting of them, that you really can't fake, and it's been one of the most pleasantly surprising things for me in going back and giving these works a visit。 It's really nice。(Still, though, movie Agnes is great, I'm not kidding, go watch it, it's the BEST)。 。。。more

This book is just a mammoth with 900+ pages that needs patience and perseverance to read and finish。A story about a young boy, with many hardships and challenges and how does he overcome those ordeals in his life。What do you expect from the legendary author, Charles Dickens。 He has written this piece of work beautifully and I loved it。

You know that feeling where you read an almost 900 pages book and end up kind of disappointed, because I do。Let’s start by talking about the characters。 I love complex and interesting people in my books, because that’s what the book is about right? The people。 Sadly, the characters here felt really one dimensional and they were either good or bad, with no in between。 I’ll start with the characters i liked。 The most interesting characters had to be Steerforth and Rosa Dartle, they were the most intriguing out of all of them imo, and I’m a little bit sour that I didn’t get to see much of them for the majority of the book。 Betsey, ah how I love that woman。 What a feminist icon!<3 Mr and Miss Murdstone are pure evil and I hate them but I still wish I could’ve seen more of them because they were actually interesting surprisingly。 Also I don’t know why but I love Miss Mowcher, she’s so funny and witty and just an absolute queen!Anyway, main character。 David is really… just boring。 He is perfect in all aspects and I don’t know why but that’s not that interesting to me。 Dora was not my favorite love interest but she’s fine, except that there’s literally zero chemistry between her and David。 Mr Micawber is that comedic relief in the book that I had absolutely no interest for, but because such a massive amount of time was spent on his shenanigans, that made those parts dreadful to me and really made me think of the books as a chore sadly。 And Pegotty, um I genuinely don’t have anything to say about her she’s just an all around good person and she’s not interesting so shrugs⚠️SPOILERS⚠️I can’t hide certain parts of the review with code without actually hiding the full recview so that’s why I’m writing a warning lmaoThoughts on the ending:Ughhhh, I said I didn’t like Dora as the love interest but really? Dickens switched her with Agnes? Now don’t get me wrong I really like Agnes, but I was so happy that she and David were just best friends in a sibling way! Now why did he have to get them together😔 I was kind of expecting him to end up with Emily and honestly that wouldn’t be the best either because they don’t know eachother that well but Agnes was a sister to him WHY?? Sweet Home Alabama intensifiesI also would’ve liked the ending to be more resolved like the Emily situation but you know, you can just ship every character to Australia, kill the rest and call it a day!I did not like the ending lolOh, since I’m “hiding” this as a spoiler, I also wanted to say that I loved loved loved Steerforth’s betrayal! It was just a slap in the face and we love a good one。⚠️Spoilers end here⚠️It took me such a long time to read this and that’s also because the plot wasn’t that interesting to me。 I loved a lot of parts in there though, it was very funny at times and the prose of Dickens was as wonderful as always。 Sadly, I got a liiiittle bit dissapointed, but that’s okay, it’s still an amazing book, but in my personal enjoyment it was a solid 3 stars。 Of course, still better than most books。I am still excited to read other books of Dickens, because I loved Great Expectations and I still did enjoy David Copperfield for the most part。 :) 。。。more

Charles Dickens was one of my favorite authors when I was a teenager and still is one of my favorites。 His characters are amazing and so memorable。 Dickens skillfully writes of the English class system and the social ills of society in the early 1800s。 David, a kind but naïve child grows up through various hardships to become a successful writer, so successful that he gives up his lucrative job as an inscriber of the speeches of Parliament。 Unfortunately, David’s first love is Dora, a childish, Charles Dickens was one of my favorite authors when I was a teenager and still is one of my favorites。 His characters are amazing and so memorable。 Dickens skillfully writes of the English class system and the social ills of society in the early 1800s。 David, a kind but naïve child grows up through various hardships to become a successful writer, so successful that he gives up his lucrative job as an inscriber of the speeches of Parliament。 Unfortunately, David’s first love is Dora, a childish, naïve but beautiful young woman。 David adores her and marries her。 She is light without depth and plays with her little dog Jip, her constant companion。 She pouts and pleads like a child and won’t talk about anything seriously。 She calls David, ‘Doady’ and puckers her mouth for a kiss。 (I did find her very annoying!)Eventually, David realizes that he should not have married Dora, although he still loves her dearly。 “There can be no disparity in marriage, like disparity of mind and purpose”。 David realizes that his decision to marry her was the “first mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart”。Dora was never robust in health and becomes more and more fragile。 When she dies, David is heartbroken。 Some time later, he marries his long-time, wise friend, Agnes Wickfield, who has supported and advised him for years。The characters are extraordinary。 Among other fascinating characters, there is Uriah Heep, the creepy law clerk, a scoundrel who has tried to undermine not only David, but David’s employer, Mr。 Wickfield。 Uriah has his eyes on Mr。 Wickfield’s daughter, Agnes, and hopes to marry Agnes, take over Mr。 Whitfield’s business, and ruin Mr。 Whitfeld financially in the process。 There is the kind Traddles, David’s old friend from school and the eccentric Aunt Trotwood。My book club chooses books to read every 6 months。 We always include a classic。 David Copperfield was chosen this time。 It was good to revisit an old favorite。Dickens’ works, as was common for Victorian novels, were originally published as monthly serials in periodicals。 Dickens was a prolific and popular writer。Some of Dickens’ books have since been made into films, including David Copperfield。 You can find this on Audible, Kindle, paperback and hardback。 In the past, when I was growing up, I read David Copperfield in an old leather bound hardback that my parents had in their classics library。I bought David Copperfield on Kindle and Audible。 Both are good choices。 。。。more

This is not my favorite Dickens book and I probably would have given it 3 stars but for the fact that he wrote it。 It is apparently the most autobiographical of his novels and the one he claims to have most enjoyed writing。 The characters are quite entertaining, with the expected astute observations and quips。 I know people complain about him being too wordy and I usually don’t mind it, but this one did drag in parts。
