Summary

Shaun of the Dead meets Dumplin' in this bitingly funny YA thriller about a kickass group of teens battling a ravenous group of zombies。

In the next few hours, one of three things will happen。

1--We'll be rescued (unlikely)

2--We'll freeze to death (maybe)

3--We'll be eaten by thin and athletic zombies (odds: excellent)

Vivian Ellenshaw is fat, but she knows she doesn't need to lose weight, so she's none too happy to find herself forced into a weight-loss camp's van with her ex-best friend, Allie, a meathead jock who can barely drive, and the camp owner's snobby son。 And when they arrive at Camp Featherlite at the start of the worst blizzard in the history of Flagstaff, Arizona, it's clear that something isn't right。

Vee barely has a chance to meet the other members of her pod, all who seem as unhappy to be at Featherlite as she does, when a camper goes missing down by the lake。 Then she spots something horrifying outside in the snow。 Something。。。that isn't human。 Plus, the camp's supposed "miracle cure" for obesity just seems fishy, and Vee and her fellow campers know they don't need to be cured。 Of anything。

Even worse, it's not long before Camp Featherlite's luxurious bungalows are totally overrun with zombies。 What starts out as a mission to unravel the camp's secrets turns into a desperate fight for survival--and not all of the Featherlite campers will make it out alive。

A satirical blend of horror, body positivity, and humor, Kelly deVos's witty, biting novel proves that everyone deserves to feel validated, and taking down the evil enterprise determined to dehumanize you is a good place to start。

I've been looking forward to reading EAT YOUR HEART OUT ever since I heard about it。 It's got a fun premise that just makes me laugh。 The set-up is unique, the characters are likable, and the action is pretty much non-stop from the get-go。 Although the book is gory and sad (in places), it's surprisingly upbeat and funny。 Most of all, it's an empowering, body-positive novel that smashes stereotypes and reminds us all that everyone is more than what they seem。 I could have without the constant F-b I've been looking forward to reading EAT YOUR HEART OUT ever since I heard about it。 It's got a fun premise that just makes me laugh。 The set-up is unique, the characters are likable, and the action is pretty much non-stop from the get-go。 Although the book is gory and sad (in places), it's surprisingly upbeat and funny。 Most of all, it's an empowering, body-positive novel that smashes stereotypes and reminds us all that everyone is more than what they seem。 I could have without the constant F-bombs blasting all over the place, but otherwise, I enjoyed this entertaining read and its many powerful messages。 。。。more

Started off really good。 Fast paced, interesting characters, solid storyline, about half way through I started to lose interest。 A really fun book, just wish it would have kept my interest a little better。

My new favorite hobby at the library is in between planned reads, just going to the YA section and picking a random book in the new section。 This one stood out to me because of the badass on the cover and Vee doesn’t disappoint in the novel。 One thing I did lack from this was depth of characters。 Steve and Vee were ogling eachother but had no real connection other than that? About 150 pages of the book was just running from zombies in different directions。 I wish some of that got cut down to focus on character development。 Also I felt that it was unfair and too sudden to kill off Sheldon。 He was an asshole yea and kinda got them into the mess but it felt rushed especially since we were supposed to be grieving for Steve’s sacrifice (which I also thought was avoidable and unnecessary) Most character deaths felt unnecessary to the story。 Especially how Allie purposely killed herself??? And that’s just kind of glossed over? Or the fact that the zombies are still semi human like Brian and they just abandoned Allie in there after discovering that? I also felt like it needed about 30 more pages of closure。 The ending felt very rushed and at times the plot felt like it was repeating itself。 However when it comes to things i LIKE about this book, I like how it challenges fatphobia and actually introduces some good plot twists。 Vivian is badass and all of Rachel’s perspectives with allusions to religion but also indirectly focusing on her religious trauma hit close to home。 Overall, a good read。 Would’ve loved to read this in middle school。 。。。more

Audiobook read by a full cast! (Sheldon's reading spit sounds were kind of distracting though) OMG, the author's note at the beginning <3I appreciate how the author captured the beliefs of teens that they are center and everything is "their fault" when that is absolutely not true at all。 Also, how did I become so connected to each character so quickly?! That was absolutely author magic。 Audiobook read by a full cast! Wow, this book! I’m not even sure I have the right words to describe how much of a fun read this was。 If you, like me, appreciate horror movie tropes but need to be invested in the characters? You’re going to absolutely love this book。Kelly deVos has taken the standard horror movie characters and turned them into people that the reader can completely understand。 Each one of them is a vividly written person, who has their own stake in the madness that is happening at Camp Featherlight。 I was trul Wow, this book! Pick this up! Kelly deVos has written a gem, and it is well worth your attention! 。。。more

I had high hopes for this book。 It wasn’t terrible, I loved the satire, but the constantly revolving point of view, was just too much for me。

Basic review to remind myself of later in case a sequel comes out: Overall I liked this book。 It wasn’t super predictable and I loved the idea of it following stereotypical scary movie plots。 I didn’t love the ending。 It felt unsatisfying for me。

This was a really solid zombie book。 I really liked how the topic of weight and fat phobia was illustrated。 And I loved, loved the cover。 The biggest disappointment was that characters are thrown straight into disaster mode, so it was hard to get a sense of the characters below surface level。While I’m not sure I’d read it again, I still enjoyed it。 And would recommend for those who want a nail biting read。

I really enjoyed this book, but it was hard to have 6 different POVs with very short chapters at first。 Once you get into each character, the action/plot shines and I appreciate the societal commentary, but probably needed at least one and maybe two POVs cut, and longer sections of the book from a single POV。

Hurry and sign up now… before it’s too late!Eat Your Heart Out is a campy (no pun intended) quick read that marries comedy and horror, providing insight to the small and big consequences of fatphobia。 I enjoyed the book for three main reasons: the satirical take on diet culture, the moments where the story pokes fun at horror movie tropes, and the vivid imagery that made me feel like I was watching a movie。 It truly is a perfect summer read。 Told in six points of view, with each character cast as a different horror movie archetype, the story offers various perspectives to the villainization of fat people in today’s culture。 Eat Your Heart Out flips the idea that plus size people are “monstrous”。 Instead, the hyper-athletic flesh-eaters, borne out of the idea that obesity is something to be cured, are the monstrous creation。 These themes are accompanied by fast-paced action scenes, chilling moments of suspense, and general butt-kickery。 Prepare to get drawn into a zombie apocalypse perpetuated by fatphobia, and root for a band of teens who show body size means nothing when fighting for your life。 Content Warnings: Strong language, fatphobia, body shaming, unhealthy eating restrictions, violence, gore, body horror, teen pregnancy, mentioned sexual content, character death(s), grief, remarried parent, parental affairFollow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @pinereadsreview and check out our website at www。pinereadsreview。com for reviews, author interviews, blogs, podcast episodes, and more! 。。。more

I was super thin and still couldn't fit into my normal range。 I get pushed into obese and I don't necessarily look it so I wonder what these labels do to others that are really struggling with their weight and image。 It's so discouraging even with daily exercise and being in shape they still may be stereotyped as "fat"。This book felt like if Jurassic Park was at a "fat" camp。 (ugh I hate the word fat) but just when you didn't think things could possibly get worse, they got 600% worse!  I loved how the first two pages have the typical character archetypes and as each chapter switches between the 5-6 main characters they sometimes reevaluate their survival rates。Undercurrent: Every life is valuable, overweight people are not expendable, ***'t *********** should all go to Hades! Also, I would be the Basket case 1,000%!  If my kids were there I would be Action Girl。 Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 。。。more

This was a fun, entertaining read while I waited for my dog to be done at the vet ✨ It’s about a fat camp that gets attacked by zombies, and it is funny and action-packed and about how we view and treat fat people as a society and devalue their lives and bodies, and why that is so awful and bad for everyone

This book was fun, and ridiculous, but I don't know if there's really enough substance to it。 Still, if you like B horror movies and some satire, check it out。 There's some diversity in regards to socio-economics and religious upbringing, which aren't always included in books。In the end there just wasn't enough pay off in the conclusion to be great for me。 It wrapped things up but I just wanted it to hit harder than it did, so this book won't really impact me, but it was a fun romp。 Pair with He This book was fun, and ridiculous, but I don't know if there's really enough substance to it。 Still, if you like B horror movies and some satire, check it out。 There's some diversity in regards to socio-economics and religious upbringing, which aren't always included in books。In the end there just wasn't enough pay off in the conclusion to be great for me。 It wrapped things up but I just wanted it to hit harder than it did, so this book won't really impact me, but it was a fun romp。 Pair with Heavyweights if you've never watched it! 。。。more

I loved this book。 Usually I don't like zombie stuff because 1。 I don't find them scary and 2。 They are just mindless hordes of cannon fodder。 This book had neither of these issues for me。 The zombies were terrifying! Nothing like a super strong, super fast undead killing machine。 But also they weren't just one mindless mass。 They were humanized in the kind of mindset that doesn't just follow a kick-ass military protagonist who finally has his time to shine type of way。 Instead there is the trag I loved this book。 Usually I don't like zombie stuff because 1。 I don't find them scary and 2。 They are just mindless hordes of cannon fodder。 This book had neither of these issues for me。 The zombies were terrifying!
