Henry “Monty” Montague doesn’t care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be。 But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end。 Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy。

It took me 3ish years but I finally finished! I originally picked this up in 2018 and got sidetracked with other titles。 I enjoyed what I read of it back then and when I started it this time around, bits and pieces came back。 The self-discovery, acceptance, adventure, romance, historical parts were all adorable but Henry/Monty as a narrator got very very annoying。

Wow! This book was a whole journey that I absolutely didn't expect。I picked this up because it's one of the newest queer YA novels that gets raved about。 I'd been told that it features a bi lead and that his sister is ace or aro, and given its historical setting, I absolutely lapped it up (hey, the 1700s is my favourite historical era, what can I say)。 Everything else was new to me。And I got so much more than I expected! A biracial love interest, a healthy exploration of bisexuality, mental illness, epilepsy, a quasi-fantastical mystery and pirates! I didn't anticipate any of this, and I'm so glad I read it。 The writing is so fun and easy to take in, and though there were definitely a handful of historical inaccuracies (the usage of 'corsets' over 'stays', for insistence), I could accept it better than other novels that make similar mistakes。 And sure, Monty does make a good point about what the hell he and Percy would do if they cast off their families, but I love a bit of a happily ever after。 I've got the second book on my 'to-borrow' list, as well as The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky。 There's so little ace rep out there, and I'm always on the hunt for it, so I can't wait to give it a read。Given the slog of bad books I've read lately, this has been a very, very welcome change。 。。。more

i fucking hate henry montague’s guts。 absolutely zero sympathy for that insufferable spoiled brat。 he’s entitled and self-absorbed and embarrassing and pathetic and worthless。 i also hated every side character who tried to elicit sympathy for him or tell him he’s not that bad。 he is utterly despicable from beginning to end and i very much regret not dumping this book as soon i realized i want to strangle the protagonist in the first chapter。 i would have liked to see him suffer a horrible and pa i fucking hate henry montague’s guts。 absolutely zero sympathy for that insufferable spoiled brat。 he’s entitled and self-absorbed and embarrassing and pathetic and worthless。 i also hated every side character who tried to elicit sympathy for him or tell him he’s not that bad。 he is utterly despicable from beginning to end and i very much regret not dumping this book as soon i realized i want to strangle the protagonist in the first chapter。 i would have liked to see him suffer a horrible and painful death, but alas, it was not to be。i am baffled by all the rave reviews。 all i feel after reading the book is rage and hatred。 i would give this zero stars if i could。 。。。more

I was listening to this in audiobook。 The narrator was absolutely delightful, the writing was well-done, the snark was hilarious, and the UST/yearning was delicious--but Monty is such an absolute mess that I couldn't stick with it。 It's not even really that he's a disaster gay but more that in his disasterrific shambling he really hurts people and doesn't know what to do about it so hurts them more--listen, it might be realistic, but I just couldn't handle it。 I did really like where the plot wa I was listening to this in audiobook。 The narrator was absolutely delightful, the writing was well-done, the snark was hilarious, and the UST/yearning was delicious--but Monty is such an absolute mess that I couldn't stick with it。 It's not even really that he's a disaster gay but more that in his disasterrific shambling he really hurts people and doesn't know what to do about it so hurts them more--listen, it might be realistic, but I just couldn't handle it。 I did really like where the plot was going, and would still recommend it to people with a higher tolerance for disasters than I have。 。。。more
