Summary

He's a famous writer。 She's his number one fan。

Misery Chastain is dead。 Paul Sheldon has just killed her - with relief, with joy。 Misery has made him rich; she was the heroine of a string of bestsellers。 And now he wants to get on to some real writing。

That's when the car accident happens, and he wakes up in pain in a strange bed。 But it isn't hospital。 Annie Wilkes has pulled him from the wreck, brought him to her remote mountain home, splinted and set his mangled legs。

The good news is that Annie was a nurse and has pain-killing drugs。 The bad news is that she has long been Paul's Number One Fan。 And when she finds out what Paul had done to Misery, she doesn't like it。 She doesn't like it at all。

Paul Sheldon used to write for a living。 Now he's writing to stay alive。

Oh。 My。 Word。 What a ride。 I mean, Stephen King can sure paint a picture that will burn in your brain。 Such amazing storytelling。 Such an insane story。 Paul Sheldon is the famous writer of the Misery Chastain novels。 Annie Wilkes is his number one fan。 One night Paul gets in a wreck, Annie finds him and keep his captive while she “nurses him back to health” and forces him to write another Misery novel。

Stephen King at his best here folks。This book is incredibly disturbing, scary and addictive。I read it in one sitting that consisted of me sitting down, glued to the book for 8 hours straight and let me tell you, i regret nothing。 It's the gotta。Stephen King, presents both the mind of an author and that of a (slightly distributed) (okay maybe not slightly) fan masterfully。Both characters felt so real even though Annie is obviously exceptionally disturbed。The book is very easy to read, but be warn Stephen King at his best here folks。This book is incredibly disturbing, scary and addictive。I read it in one sitting that consisted of me sitting down, glued to the book for 8 hours straight and let me tell you, i regret nothing。 It's the gotta。Stephen King, presents both the mind of an author and that of a (slightly distributed) (okay maybe not slightly) fan masterfully。Both characters felt so real even though Annie is obviously exceptionally disturbed。The book is very easy to read, but be warned, it definitely leaves you feeling trapped and hopeless, just like Paul。I also enjoyed the tidbits into the inerworkings of the mind of a writer。Let me just say though, that Misery's back book is totally ridiculous。 But still, I enjoyed even those parts, despite the laughable dialogue and outrageous plot points。 。。。more

There is some dated language and imagery in here that I don't think King would use now (his modern books don't ping anything for me) and that I don't think I noticed last time, but overall this book is still great。 Full review probably next month, if I'm being honest。[4。5 stars] There is some dated language and imagery in here that I don't think King would use now (his modern books don't ping anything for me) and that I don't think I noticed last time, but overall this book is still great。 Full review probably next month, if I'm being honest。[4。5 stars] 。。。more

In this (hopefully) subsiding pandemic, I chose to read yet another story about people being cooped up in a house for months together while being cooped up in my house for months together albeit in considerably better circumstances。 I did not regret my decision in the least。Misery, for the most part, consists of two characters in one single location。 Paul Sheldon is trapped in an escape room from hell and the only puzzle he needs to solve to escape it is Annie。This book is another in a long list In this (hopefully) subsiding pandemic, I chose to read yet another story about people being cooped up in a house for months together while being cooped up in my house for months together albeit in considerably better circumstances。 I did not regret my decision in the least。Misery, for the most part, consists of two characters in one single location。 Paul Sheldon is trapped in an escape room from hell and the only puzzle he needs to solve to escape it is Annie。This book is another in a long list of novels by Stephen King that I have absolutely loved。 His writing has the ability to engage all five of your senses while you’re reading and to make you feel exactly as the characters in the book feel。 You are not merely a fly on the wall, observing events unfold。 You are the characters themselves trying to make sense of their situations and trying to find a way out。 I felt as trapped as Paul Sheldon and I found myself straining my ears for the sound of Annie Wilkes’ footsteps and was terrorized when a dark look came across her face。In my opinion, the strength in almost all of King’s stories is that he really seems to know all of his characters inside-out。 And through subtle instances he helps us get to know them well too…perhaps not as he does, but well enough to know when they’re about to erupt。 While reading Misery I was certainly shocked at some of the things Annie had done, but in retrospect it wasn’t in the least bit out of character。 It would have been weird and inconsistent had she not done those things。 The horror in King’s books isn’t from what the characters do – it’s from who the characters are on the inside。Misery also makes an excellent point about art and its impact on those who make it as well as on those who consume it。 Annie is very clearly obsessed with the Misery novels, and we all know the impact art has had in our lives and how much we cherish it – in whatever form we prefer。 But through Paul Sheldon – who, in the direst circumstances, finds solace in writing and whose main concern, somehow, above his own life, becomes what he has created, we see how important art is for those who make it。With every Stephen King novel I read, I see more aspects to his writing I didn’t notice before。 Not to mention his incredible stories。 Misery was no exception in both these aspects。 King will certainly be an author I return to over and over again。 。。。more

This man's mind is so messed up, but Goddess help me, I love it。 Not many books can make your stomach clench and your pace quicken。 Even better than the film。 This man's mind is so messed up, but Goddess help me, I love it。 Not many books can make your stomach clench and your pace quicken。 Even better than the film。 。。。more

How is it possible to enjoy a book like this? I'm not sure I know how, but I did。 Annie Wilkes is atrocious。 But through the groans and grimaces, there's also laughter and hope。 Tiny, torn-up strips of hope, but hope nonetheless。 Enough to scrape by。 Enough to turn one cockadoodie page after another, thrilled and appalled all at once, until I reached the end。 How is it possible to enjoy a book like this? I was sick to my stomach。 I loved it。 There were times when I just wanted to throw this book across my room and scream or just straight up throw up。 It's a psychological thriller and the story is focused on basically two people - Paul and Annie。 This, hovewer, does not take away from the story - if anything it makes it even more great。 We are trapped with Paul in his little guest room, holding our breath, deciding - was it wind? Or the car? For the love of God, scream, Paul! Just scream! This is my favorite horror book。 To this day, I still believe it is scarier than The Shining。

I started it and restarted it multiple times and just couldn’t get into it…I guess I just had to be in the right frame of mind to handle this book。 It is suspenseful, it is gruesome, it is gory。 It is Stephen King at his best。 Annie Wilkes is terrifying because there’s nothing supernatural about it except that she’s a little crazy。 She’s such a well developed villain, I would read a book all about her。 Probably one of my top 5 favorite Stephen King novels now。

King does it once again🙌 Truly one of my fav authors。 I fr gagged throughout multiple chapters of this book because of the gruesome details and the thought of experiencing what Paul experienced is horrifying。 King always seems to surprise me with the twists and turns his stories take, and his implicit parallels between characters。 There's not enough good things I can say about this book; its smart, scary, and filled with gut-wrenching sadness and feelings of hope for Paul。 The mention of the Ove King does it once again🙌 Truly one of my fav authors。 I fr gagged throughout multiple chapters of this book because of the gruesome details and the thought of experiencing what Paul experienced is horrifying。 King always seems to surprise me with the twists and turns his stories take, and his implicit parallels between characters。 There's not enough good things I can say about this book; its smart, scary, and filled with gut-wrenching sadness and feelings of hope for Paul。 The mention of the Overlook hotel was also very cool and I felt like a weeb for getting so excited over it。 All in all such an amazing and quick summer read。 。。。more

This was my first Stephen King that I have read, and it won't be my last。 I loved every bit of this book。 He did a phenomenal job with the writing to make you feel like you're part of Annie and Pauls world。 I started to get anxious whenever Paul did something because he would face the wrath of Annie。 It didn't matter what he did, there was always something Annie would pick out to be upset and go overboard about。 And that's the whole point of Annie's character, right? To her, nothing is right。 Ev This was my first Stephen King that I have read, and it won't be my last。 I loved every bit of this book。 He did a phenomenal job with the writing to make you feel like you're part of Annie and Pauls world。 I started to get anxious whenever Paul did something because he would face the wrath of Annie。 It didn't matter what he did, there was always something Annie would pick out to be upset and go overboard about。 And that's the whole point of Annie's character, right? While acknowledging it? I understand how it sounds, but that's the truth。 Maybe it's just me, but for a few split seconds throughout the book you do actually feel bad for Annie but then those feelings are quickly washed away。 Even Paul had a sense of empathy for a quick second towards the end of the book when all those people started to show up at the "Dragon Lady's" house。 Honestly, you may too。 。。。more

Misery, a brilliant and thrilling story about pain, power, survival, obsession, a mentally unstable fan and writing, what's not to love? The way King writes from the perspective of Paul is nothing short of spectacular, the way he uses metaphors and analyses Annie the way a writer would makes you feel the same thing Paul does and leaves you on the edge of your seat。 The character Annie is everything I would want in an antagonist, a strong backstory, flaws, moments in which you are forced to feel Misery, a brilliant and thrilling story about pain, power, survival, obsession, a mentally unstable fan and writing, what's not to love? After putting the finishing touches to his latest novel, Paul Sheldon celebrates by going on an alcohol fueled drive through the Rocky mountains that ends in a near fatal car crash。 He is in luck as he is saved and taken home by Annie, his number 1 fan。 Unfortunately, luck is not always good luck, and there the nightmare begins。 This was a reread after many years, and I was surprised how much it held up。 I’m not really a lover of King’s longer novels, but this one is really good。
