Summary

Bestselling author Jennifer Estep returns to her Crown of Shards world with an all-new trilogy and a bold new heroine who protects her kingdom from magic, murder, and mayhem by moonlighting as a spy。

Gemma Ripley has a reputation for being a pampered princess who is more interested in pretty gowns, sparkling jewelry, and other frivolous things than learning how to rule the kingdom of Andvari。 But her carefully crafted persona is just an act to hide the fact that Gemma is a powerful mind magier—and a spy。

Gemma is undercover, trying to figure out who is stealing large amounts of tearstone from one of the Ripley royal mines when she encounters Prince Leonidas Morricone of Morta—her mortal enemy。 Gemma tries to steer clear of the handsome prince, but when she finds herself behind enemy lines, she reluctantly joins forces with Leo。 Also coming to Gemma’s aid is Grimley, her beloved gargoyle。

Despite the fact that Andvari and Morta are old, bitter enemies, a dangerous attraction sparks between Gemma and Leo。 Further complicating matters is Leo’s murderous family, especially Queen Maeven Morricone, the mastermind behind the infamous Seven Spire massacre。

The closer Gemma gets to the stolen tearstone, the more deadly plots she uncovers。 Everyone is trying to capture the crown, but only one queen can sit on the throne…

I enjoyed getting back into the world Jennifer started in the Crown of Shards books。 I like that it's years later, and we are following characters who were young in the first trilogy。 I'm looking forward to the next book。 I enjoyed getting back into the world Jennifer started in the Crown of Shards books。 I like that it's years later, and we are following characters who were young in the first trilogy。 I'm looking forward to the next book。 。。。more

A compulsively readable and fun fantasy featuring a princess who moonlights as a spy, a prince with conflicted loyalties, thrilling action sequences, and some very interesting secondary characters。 My fantasy taste usually leans more heavily towards fairy-tale like fantasy but I really enjoy Estep's take on epic fantasy, especially how she lets the reader see her heroines come into their own and become more capable and powerful over the course of each book。 A compulsively readable and fun fantasy featuring a princess who moonlights as a spy, a prince with conflicted loyalties, thrilling action sequences, and some very interesting secondary characters。 My fantasy taste usually leans more heavily towards fairy-tale like fantasy but I really enjoy Estep's take on epic fantasy, especially how she lets the reader see her heroines come into their own and become more capable and powerful over the course of each book。 。。。more

When your loyalties are torn, it makes for a very interesting and tense plot as you don’t know which way the scale will tip! I can’t wait for the sequel! Thanks for reading!  Sophie 。。。more

I think I was in chapter 2 when I realized this is in the same world as the A Crown of Shards trilogy。 Although, I have to admit, this book blew those other ones out of the water。 It was compelling and kept me guessing as to what would happen next。 I also love a slow burn romance。 There was lots of action and I didn't want to put it down。 I am excited for the next book。 My thoughts and predictions:(view spoiler)[I thought Maeven would have Gemma kill Milo for her and her children but she stopped I think I was in chapter 2 when I realized this is in the same world as the A Crown of Shards trilogy。 Although, I have to admit, this book blew those other ones out of the water。 It was compelling and kept me guessing as to what would happen next。 I also love a slow burn romance。 There was lots of action and I didn't want to put it down。 I am excited for the next book。 My thoughts and predictions:(view spoiler)[I thought Maeven would have Gemma kill Milo for her and her children but she stopped it。 My hunch is she wants Leo to kill him or maybe more likely Delmira since she obviously wants her to be queen。I think Delmira is very powerful but Maeven has masked it so everyone underestimates her。 The vines are very obviously connected to her but I couldn't tell if the subconsciousness was her directly or an entity of its own。 Similar to how Leo has Lyra and Gemma has Grimmley。Maeven obviously wants Gemma to end up with Leo and doesn't expect him to be king。 She will use their attraction to her advantage for her end game。I don't see the point of calling her the Gargoyle Queen but obviously it will be unveiled in the future。 She definitely wanted people to know that Gemma is powerful too and not to be underestimated although people will probably still do it。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This book is simply too juvenile for a mature audience。 Would be great for kids

Meh。 The main character definitely seems younger to me than the 29 she’s supposed to be。 The attraction I was constantly told existed between characters didn’t actually feel real。 The world building was pretty weak。 All in all, there was so much opportunity but very little follow through。

For me, the middle of the book “lulled” a little bit but not enough to make me stop reading。 I kept hoping more would develop/take place between Leo and Gemma, but based on the other Jennifer Estep novels I’ve read, I know she does a fantastic job with the slooooooowwww burns。 If you are looking for a juicy romance, this might not be for you。If you want action, intrigue, magic, courtly politics, with a hint of a blossoming relationship, then I would suggest this one!The only issue is waiting for the next one to arrive… May 2022。 。。。more

Same universe as Crown of Shards。 Gemma is an idiot。 Leonidas is an idiot from the nation wanting to conquer Gemma's nation。 The idiots think it's smart to take Gemma to Maeven's castle。 Absolutely nothing about the enjoyable writing can conquer that bit of stupidity -- but it does save this novel and give it an average rating。 Same universe as Crown of Shards。 Gemma is an idiot。 Leonidas is an idiot from the nation wanting to conquer Gemma's nation。 The idiots think it's smart to take Gemma to Maeven's castle。 Absolutely nothing about the enjoyable writing can conquer that bit of stupidity -- but it does save this novel and give it an average rating。 。。。more

Glorious and Fun, Devious and DeviantThis is the first book in a trilogy, so be prepared for a bit of world-building in this one。 But it's an amazing place, and the world-building is deftly done。I'm not sure which I enjoyed more: the incredibly diverse cast of characters or the plot that grabs you like a tiger with a rag doll, and won't let you go。 The main characters, Gemma and Leonidus are well crafted and much more complex than expected。 She's a princess, he's a prince。 But their kingdoms hav Glorious and Fun, Devious and DeviantThis is the first book in a trilogy, so be prepared for a bit of world-building in this one。 But it's an amazing place, and the world-building is deftly done。I'm not sure which I enjoyed more: the incredibly diverse cast of characters or the plot that grabs you like a tiger with a rag doll, and won't let you go。 The main characters, Gemma and Leonidus are well crafted and much more complex than expected。 She's a princess, he's a prince。 But their kingdoms have been at odds for years。 Gemma considers Leonidus to be her nemesis, and rightly so。This plot is so deliciously devious it gets under your skin。 It seems like everyone's got an angle, an agenda。。。 it's like a royal game of King of the Mountain as they try to fling all others off the mound by any means necessary。 Basically, trust no one。My only issue with this amazing story is that odd fact that this is considered YA fiction but the characters have no problem throwing the "f-bomb" around。 In my estimation, that doesn't really make this a YA read, even though it feels like one。 I realize all parents are different, but I certainly wouldn't have considered this an appropriate read for my high-schooler, even if they do hear this language in school all the time。 To me, this is an 18+ read due to the language and some pretty gnarly torture scenes。 But that's an individual decision for sure。 It doesn't change the fact that I truly enjoyed this story。 。。。more

The pair shares an unique kind of magic, and her growing feelings for him may just be her downfall。 Can she escape with heart intact? What is his motivation? Love the flawed, doubting (of herself) character of Gemma and her gargoyle Grimley, who likes to be scratched between his horns (rather like a cat)。 The bad guys (male and female) are truly evil, and no one is safe from their machinations, and there are enough characters who walk the line between good and evil to keep the reader guessing as to their motivations。 There's magic and mayhem, death and destruction, and so much more in this fantasy series。The only downside to this story is waiting until May 2022 for the further adventures of Gemma and Grimley, but there is a sneak peek at the end to whet the appetite。 。。。more
