i have very mixed opinions on this novel。 for the most part the story is exceptionally good。 full honesty i expected the novel to be a slow burn about finding out dracula was a vampire。 to my surprise and delight it’s really just multiple strange stories being weaved together through the character’s relationships with each other。 i think the character of renfield was exceptionally interesting, and lucy’s entire story arc was very good。 there are some really interesting philosophical (ish) asides i have very mixed opinions on this novel。 for the most part the story is exceptionally good。 full honesty i expected the novel to be a slow burn about finding out dracula was a vampire。 to my surprise and delight it’s really just multiple strange stories being weaved together through the character’s relationships with each other。 i think the character of renfield was exceptionally interesting, and lucy’s entire story arc was very good。 there are some really interesting philosophical (ish) asides aswell, especially from the old man mina is friends with。 for the most part this story creates a lovely gothic narrative from all aspects , scenery , characters and plot , however some of the description is just brutal! at points there will be abt 3 long winded pages of benile monologue from van helsing that really throw off the pace of the book。 i think stoker just rambles at some points, and if the novel was edited down abit it would’ve been 5 stars!!! i think near the end where the pace needed to slow speed up , it just flattened out which kinda made the book too drawn out。 however, all in all i would re read this book, so much of if is enjoyable and exciting that i’m inclined to put up with some of the dull moments。 as for the ending, um it was okay?? i think the long dull build up made quite a sweet ending feel a little dull, and did the finale injustice。 but the book is still for the most part exciting and beautiful to read。 i’d still deffo recommend the read for anyone into gothic lit! :) 。。。more

I would’ve wanted to read this one eventually anyway, but it was on a 1,000 books to read before you die list, so that added extra incentive。 I’d previously read and greatly enjoyed “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, and hoped that “Dracula” would be just as good, worth all the attention it’s gotten over the decades。 As the story started, and I saw that it was conveyed wholly to readers through letters or journal entries, much like how Frankenstein is written, I felt my hopes and expectations were I would’ve wanted to read this one eventually anyway, but it was on a 1,000 books to read before you die list, so that added extra incentive。 I’d previously read and greatly enjoyed “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley, and hoped that “Dracula” would be just as good, worth all the attention it’s gotten over the decades。 As the story started, and I saw that it was conveyed wholly to readers through letters or journal entries, much like how Frankenstein is written, I felt my hopes and expectations were being confirmed。 It was Frankenstein 2。0。Well, I quickly discovered that the book was terribly exaggerated。 I want to use the term over-acted, and since Bram Stoker came from a career in the theater, the phrase might be a fitting one。 For instance at the start of the book, every villager will cross themselves at any mention of the Count or Dracula, and it became eye-roll inducing how everyone did it。 Like hello, can you not see that there’s a problem here? There are plenty of other examples, such as when Dracula encounters a crucifix he pulls his cape over his head I think。 Zero subtlety whatsoever。 I’ve never seen any of the Dracula films, but from seeing clips, I’d always thought Bella Lugosi was over-acting, but after reading Dracula, I realize he was accurately portraying the Count as Stoker wrote him。The biggest problem with the book for me, and it goes along with the over-actedness of it, is that the writer tries to keep Dracula’s identity a secret, it takes some hundred and fifty pages before he finally reveals that the Count is a vampire, and for us who know the Dracula story, it’s the worst kept secret in the world。 Everyone knows Dracula is a vampire, so Stoker’s decision to write the book as a mystery, trying to keep the readers in suspense over what is causing these attacks, is in my opinion the fatal flaw which dooms the book。 When we first meet the Count, he is described as having sharp fang teeth protruding from his mouth。 Hello!? Can’t you see he is a vampire!? We also learn quickly on that he has an aversion to garlic, is weakened by crucifixes, and has no reflection。 Yet the author still tries for a hundred and fifty pages to keep it secret that Dracula is a vampire。 Because of this, the book felt painfully obvious, and the characters completely clueless。 This is also why I think the Dracula story transfers so well to satire。 It’s almost a spoof in itself。 Characters see this pale figure with jutting teeth and are clueless to what he is, while we plainly can tell it’s a vampire。 In a spoof, since the audience is in on the joke, this makes it funny, but the way Stoker has it, with the characters genuinely oblivious to what is going on, it comes across as stupid and comically bad。This leads to the most basic conclusion for the book – it is almost impossible for modern readers to enjoy this story, because we are so familiar with the Dracula story, we cannot enjoy it in the same way as when it first came out。 But unlike Frankenstein, where I still enjoyed the novel despite knowing all about Frankenstein’s monster, I didn’t so much enjoy Dracula, and I think it’s because Stoker tried to write it as a mystery。 Trying to keep something secret from readers when they already know the secret is a recipe for disaster。 So because of this, I think it’s important to stress that my reading of “Dracula” is spoiled by already being familiar with the story。That aside however, I was excited when a hundred pages in or so, we finally meet the character of Van Helsing。 That was another classic character I was looking forward to meeting, and when one of the first things Van Helsing does is to spread garlic around the room, I felt that was such a eureka moment, because I knew he was aware of what was really going on。 To me, this was the best moment in the book。 I hoped Van Helsing’s introduction would give the story some much-needed action, drive the plot forward, but I quickly discovered a sad fact – Bram Stoker made another fatal decision, and that was to make Van Helsing his most boring character。 In particular, his dialogue is the absolute worst in the book。 Whereas everyone else speaks relatively normally, Van Helsing will take half a page or a full page to say what other characters say in ten or fifteen words。 Because of this, every time he opened his mouth, I wanted to skip or skim ahead, and that’s bad because Van Helsing, knowing Dracula’s nature, his dialogue should be the most important in the scene。 But because he was so dull, so wordy and boring, I just wanted to skip it。 To me, that was the final nail in the coffin, and I just knew I wasn’t enjoying the book。I do give Stoker credit for his contribution to culture。 Dracula and Van Helsing are two of the coolest names ever introduced in the literary world。 Vampires are cool, and the whole bits about garlic and crucifixes and not having a reflection, as well as turning into a bat, biting people in the neck, being staked through the heart and all of that, that has given us so much entertainment value over the decades。 Also, whenever anyone sees garlic or puts garlic on something or whatever, I think in the back of people’s minds somewhere they think about Dracula or vampires, maybe without ever even reading or seeing Dracula。 They just know garlic is tied with Count Dracula。 And that’s pretty neat an accomplishment, for Stoker’s story to be so ingrained into our culture that garlic is almost synonymous with vampires。As for the rating, in my booktube video I gave the book two stars, but I’m actually going to bump it up to three stars。 The main thing is I couldn’t enjoy it so much knowing most of the story beforehand, but if I could’ve read the story without knowing the Dracula story, as readers did when it first came out, I would probably think it’d be a four-star book, maybe five。 Knowing the Dracula story, and rolling my eyes so much as I did at the characters not knowing what is going on and Van Helsing being so boring, three stars is a generous rating。 。。。more

After reading Frankenstein in 2018, I thought it would be a fun tradition to read a classic “horror” story each October, and this was my most anticipated。 I’d always wanted to read the original text despite avid avoidance of the horror genre in my life, because I’d heard it was a beautiful book told in letters – and because I remember the old film with Gary Oldman to be darkly fascinating and terrifying in a unique way。 But I abandoned it in Chapter 5。 I was BORED for 3 chapters and then suddenl After reading Frankenstein in 2018, I thought it would be a fun tradition to read a classic “horror” story each October, and this was my most anticipated。 I’d always wanted to read the original text despite avid avoidance of the horror genre in my life, because I’d heard it was a beautiful book told in letters – and because I remember the old film with Gary Oldman to be darkly fascinating and terrifying in a unique way。 But I abandoned it in Chapter 5。 I was BORED for 3 chapters and then suddenly I was terrified while listening to the audiobook and envisioning the count crawling “lizard-like” 😳 down the outer castle wall。 Then the 3 sisters appeared 。 Then Jonathan Harker saw Dracula lying inside a coffin with EYES OPEN and HE TURNED HIS HEAD toward Harker while not actually being conscious!!! I knew I couldn’t listen to this story while lying in bed as I usually do。 Freaked me out!I was pretty well done in after Chapter 4, but when the story suddenly shifted to letters between Mina and her friend, thereby jarring me out of the previous story, i got bored again and just didn’t care to finish。 I wanted to know the story but didn’t have the patience to wade through the language (or the moments of terror)。 SparkNotes satisfied my curiosity and I felt good about not finishing the read。 Dracula was too much for me to endure。 —“Bless that good, good woman who hung the crucifix round my neck! for it is a comfort and a strength to me whenever I touch it。 It is odd that a thing which I have been taught to regard with disfavour and as idolatrous should in a time of loneliness and trouble be of help。 Is it that there is something in the essence of the thing itself, or that it is a medium, a tangible help, in conveying memories of sympathy and comfort?”“The old centuries had, and have, powers of their own which mere ‘modernity’ cannot kill。” 。。。more

。。。more

I can finally have an opinion on the epic challenge Dracula/Frankenstein: while Mary Shelley’s classic is a masterpiece of philosophy with great social implications and will always be superior in my eyes in that regard, Dracula was simply more entertaining to read。
