Summary

USA Today bestselling author Loretta Chase continues her Difficult Dukes series with this delightful spin on Shakespeare's classic, The Taming of the Shrew。

Cassandra Pomfret holds strong opinions she isn’t shy about voicing。 But her extremely plain speaking has caused an uproar, and her exasperated father, hoping a husband will rein her in, has ruled that her beloved sister can’t marry until Cassandra does。

Now, thanks to a certain wild-living nobleman, the last shreds of Cassandra’s reputation are about to disintegrate, taking her sister’s future and her family’s good name along with them。

The Duke of Ashmont’s looks make women swoon。 His character flaws are beyond counting。 He’s lost a perfectly good bride through his own carelessness。 He nearly killed one of his two best friends。 Still, troublemaker that he is, he knows that damaging a lady’s good name isn’t sporting。

The only way to right the wrong is to marry her…and hope she doesn’t smother him in his sleep on their wedding night。

A little too much of the same。 And the third happened after they could have had a happy end。 It seemed to me to be a method to lengthen the plot without any real substance and that made me stop listening。 I don't think I would have read so far as I have listened to the audiobook。 So I have to give credit to Kate Reading。 The not very intelligent, drunk and childisch Hero never was my kind of guy for romance books, and even though I liked the heroin in her makings, she succumbed a little too easily。 。。。more

Pros:1。 Mostly well written on a sentence level2。 The guy is a bit of a jerk and she hates him at first, but he actually puts in work to grow and change (plus there's some backstory), so it makes sense that she is won over in the end。Cons: 1。 He basically falls in love with her on day one, so there's no dramatic tension。 The enemies to lovers thing doesn't quite work unless it's two-sided。 2。 There are several situations with real stakes, that could have had interesting resolutions。 But everythi Pros:1。 Mostly well written on a sentence level2。 The guy is a bit of a jerk and she hates him at first, but he actually puts in work to grow and change (plus there's some backstory), so it makes sense that she is won over in the end。Cons: 1。 He basically falls in love with her on day one, so there's no dramatic tension。 The enemies to lovers thing doesn't quite work unless it's two-sided。 2。 There are several situations with real stakes, that could have had interesting resolutions。 But everything just gets tied up with a neat little bow with very little effort。3。 The love scenes are weird。 If you're going to do a physical scene, do it。 Otherwise, fade to black。 。。。more

There is nothing to intensly dislike about this book, but there also isn't that much to like either。 Heroine is blah although we're constantly told how smart and brave she is。 Hero is your usual drunkard and degenerate who will blossom under heroine's loving light and will mend his wicked ways。 Didn't care much for either of them。 DNF for now but still interested in book #3。 There is nothing to intensly dislike about this book, but there also isn't that much to like either。 Heroine is blah although we're constantly told how smart and brave she is。 Hero is your usual drunkard and degenerate who will blossom under heroine's loving light and will mend his wicked ways。 Didn't care much for either of them。 DNF for now but still interested in book #3。 。。。more

I keep saying that heroine in Historical Romance forgive their hero easily, forgiveness is not a bag of candy you give away easily。 But this book make me realised that it actually really boring when the hero tried so hard to redeem himself to be worthy of the heroine。 I skimmed a lot of this book and can't wait it's over, I didn't even read the last page of this book, because life is too short and I've wasted a considerable amount of time trying to like this one。 Also another thing, why is she a I keep saying that heroine in Historical Romance forgive their hero easily, forgiveness is not a bag of candy you give away easily。 But this book make me realised that it actually really boring when the hero tried so hard to redeem himself to be worthy of the heroine。 I skimmed a lot of this book and can't wait it's over, I didn't even read the last page of this book, because life is too short and I've wasted a considerable amount of time trying to like this one。 Also another thing, why is she a Miss if her father is a Lord and held a high position in a Court? 。。。more

GOODNESS。 i barely finished the first book in the series and you know, i HAD to read this one immediately, because i was so intrigued about what would happen with lucius after all the mess he made before。 in spite of everything i had a soft spot for him and upon further reading he only endeared himself more to me。 he was such a disaster - some thought him a lost cause, and they had reasons enough to believe that, but of course he came around。 after all the business with the duel and the accident GOODNESS。 i barely finished the first book in the series and you know, i HAD to read this one immediately, because i was so intrigued about what would happen with lucius after all the mess he made before。 in spite of everything i had a soft spot for him and upon further reading he only endeared himself more to me。 he was such a disaster - some thought him a lost cause, and they had reasons enough to believe that, but of course he came around。 after all the business with the duel and the accident and cassandra simply refusing to suffer his shortcomings (as well she ought!) he set about improving himself with the same unwavering determination he used to carry out the most outrageous pranks。 overall he was a hopeless himbo, desperately in love with a girl who refused to have him unless he became someone worthy and dependable, which he did。as for cassandra - she was wonderful。 she cared so much, and her heart was always in the right place。 i admired her fire and tenacity, the way she refused to back down and be the mild spineless lady almost everyone hoped she would be instead of her natural untameable self。 she refused to conform, not because she delighted in rebelling but because she understood the necessity of it。 someone had to stand up and do the right thing and help those who needed helping, and she didn't for an instant entertain leaving it to others as many a lady of her station might have done。 i loved her for it。 and i also loved that she refused to put up with lucius' nonsense。 yes, she used to think he hung the moon and stars in the sky when she was younger, but she became disillusioned and as grown, mature woman made him WORK to earn her respect。 nothing else would do, no matter his charm or otherworldly good looksas a couple i adored them together。 like i said i loved lucius but he's not a brilliant man by a long stretch。 this was clear to everyone including himself。 he acknowledged cassandra as his better in this regard and it didn't shame him in the least。 he knew she was brightest and it didn't cross his mind to try to diminish her but instead appreciated her and did his best to understand and he read - mary wollstonecraft! - to get a better idea of what she talked about and why it was so important to her。 then he read again and again until the ideas made sense and in general kept trying to be the kind of man who deserved to be by her side。 and cassandra saw the facts and believed in him as fiercely as she had before, this enhanced by her now being aware of his flaws, in spite of which she loved him completely, as he did her。 i was utterly charmed by them。 i can only hope to see a little more of them in alice and blackwood's book 。。。more

First half: meh。 Second half: a slightly more engrossing read。 I had a similar problem with the previous book, A Duke in Shining Armor, where I just wasn't feeling it for the first 50% of the book。 The Dis-Graces are meant to be this misbehaving pranking trio, but thus far they just seem hopelessly juvenile and overindulged。 In the beginning of Ten Things I Hate About the Duke, Ashmont was a drunk disgrace and Cassandra seemed unnecessarily cruel at times。 Once we hit the fake engagement plan, w First half: meh。 Second half: a slightly more engrossing read。 I had a similar problem with the previous book, A Duke in Shining Armor, where I just wasn't feeling it for the first 50% of the book。 The Dis-Graces are meant to be this misbehaving pranking trio, but thus far they just seem hopelessly juvenile and overindulged。 In the beginning of Ten Things I Hate About the Duke, Ashmont was a drunk disgrace and Cassandra seemed unnecessarily cruel at times。 Once we hit the fake engagement plan, we get a lot of scenes of Ashmont trying to behave well/reform himself and Cassandra addressing her conflicted feelings, but it's a uphill battle to get to that point。 。。。more

I really did enjoy this book but I’m not sure what I felt was missing。 I feel it was written in the style of romance books from the nineteenth century。 It didn’t feel like it was a modern read, which I enjoyed。 I loved the banter between the h/h and especially the directness that Cassandra used。 I laughed at the befuddlement of Lucius being unable to fully understand Cassandra。 But it made sense since he is a product of a misogynistic world。 For a man of that time period to embrace women’s right I really did enjoy this book but I’m not sure what I felt was missing。 I feel it was written in the style of romance books from the nineteenth century。 It didn’t feel like it was a modern read, which I enjoyed。 I loved the banter between the h/h and especially the directness that Cassandra used。 I laughed at the befuddlement of Lucius being unable to fully understand Cassandra。 But it made sense since he is a product of a misogynistic world。 For a man of that time period to embrace women’s rights was unusual。 He was adorable as he attempted to flex his unused brain and celebrated, admired, respected Cassandra。 I found this to be subdued not really a bodice ripper。 It’s more of a slow burn。 When the stories main strife occurred I found I loved the solution, to me it seemed real and reasonable。 This story is a gentle romp through the growth and development of a untutored self indulgent man and a independent impetuous do-gooder female。 They are two sides of the same coin。 。。。more

So far this the only historical romance where things like talking to a man alone actually had consequences。 In others the character said "oh, this is improper" but nothing *really* came out it。 In Ten Things I Hate About the Duke there are talks about consequences and actually consequences。 I appreciate that。 Although I expected to love this book, I liked it enough。 It was a fun read and I'm planning to read others by the author。 So far this the only historical romance where things like talking to a man alone actually had consequences。 In others the character said "oh, this is improper" but nothing *really* came out it。 In Ten Things I Hate About the Duke there are talks about consequences and actually consequences。 I appreciate that。 Although I expected to love this book, I liked it enough。 It was a fun read and I'm planning to read others by the author。 。。。more

I enjoyed this one。 Some things I particularly liked were:1。 Cassandra was a great heroine。 Feminist in her own right。 Helpful almost to her own detriment but still very smart。 Headstrong without being too stupid to live。 2。 I enjoyed the side characters。 They gave some real depth to the story and moved it along nicely。 I particularly liked interactions that included Cassandra's mother。 So what kept this from being a higher rating?
