My main goal jumping into this book was to see Charles Soule's writing style and how he paid attention to characters, relevant especially because he is the main writer for the War of the Bounty Hunters comics, which has a heavy focus on Boba Fett-- who I care a lot about! I hesitated jumping into this era simply because I did not want to be introduced to a ton of new characters, but the book managed to change my mind and give me appreciation for a whole new era in the Star Wars universe。The High Republic is a time of economic success and peace for everyone, and it is also when the Jedi are at their most plentiful and most revered。 All are united by a single phrase: "We are all the Republic。" The main concept of the novel is that hyperspace is slowly becoming understood by the galaxy's citizens and they're starting to figure out hyperspace lanes, but don't fully understand them。 It's a very new way of travel and they have access to the Outer Rim, but just barely。 The story starts off with a tragedy that affects the rest of the novel, highlights the impacts of not only the large bodies of the Republic, but the individuals and people trying to make their way in an ever-changing galaxy。 Meanwhile, our main antagonists, a gang known as the Nihil, are introduced and shake things up as any fun antagonists would。I'll start off by saying that Soule's writing immediately caught my attention and I found myself attached to very minor characters。 He is good at bringing characters to life, showing us how they live, and impacting us with whatever follows。 His writing style is very expressive, and he brings out the feelings and niches of the character he is writing about in that moment。 One of my favorite examples includes a lovestruck man working his boring, repetitive, thankless job, and how Soule is able to showcase that monotony while expressing the character's habits, hobbies, interests in such a short and engaging chapter。 I could really understand this man despite how he was just one chapter-- one piece of a novel containing a galaxy full of people。Soule also is a big fan of punching you with his words。 He will build up to something, paint a beautiful picture, then smack you with the twist, the brutal honesty of whatever he is writing。 While I certainly noticed it, every time does this, it's effective and engaging。 I never felt bored reading through the novel, and his writing style has a lot to do with it。Along with the writing style, I loved the spiritual way the Force is described。 The Force isn't just one thing, of course-- it's everything, but it means different things to different people, and people see it in all sorts of ways。 Avar Kriss sees the force like a web connecting everyone together, while her colleague, Elzar Mann, sees the Force as a never-ending sea he can swim in。 I hesitate to call it religious, but that's kind of what it is。 We all have extremely individual experiences with spirituality, what it means to us, what it looks like to us, and I found it beautiful and realistic on how the Force connects to all life。Going in, I heard the Nihil were flat antagonists, but honestly, I loved them。 I love the idea of a very chaotic group of people who, at the same time, follow a very rigid set of rules set by their superiors。 I love that clashing ideology that no one ever questions and how the idea itself changes over the story。 I skipped some thoughts in this review to keep it spoiler-free, but I found them very, very interesting and the exploration of the antagonists are some of my favorite parts of the novel。I have a lot of positive things to say and not much negative at all to add, but I would say that there are a lot of characters and it's difficult to remember all of them and follow them。 The book has different branches that end up intersecting as we get to the climax of the novel and how it comes together is very satisfying, but there were a few times I just wanted to follow one thread of the story since another thread didn't have nearly as much going on。 This is kinda how the Clone Wars series works too, which I think many will enjoy。 I don't have strong feelings against it but I could see it being overwhelming for some。Overall, I deeply enjoyed this book and I think this would be a great introduction to someone new to Star Wars or someone who would like to jump into the novels, especially adults。 This book did not hide much and it did not hold your hand, but it is not a gruesome or tasteless novel。 It's very much geared towards adults, very much classy, and very much Star Wars。 I recommend it! 。。。more

I never thought I would enjoy a Star Wars story without the Sith against the Jedi, but this book showed me the way。 It was a very uplifting (yet dark) start to a generation of Star Wars I want to experience all the way through。 All of the characters were interesting and unique and I wanted to stay up to date with all of them。 Even the villains。 They’re all intriguing in a way that makes me want more and more。 Luckily I have all the adult and YA novels released at the moment。WE ARE THE REPUBLIC!

Light of the Jedi is an interesting perspective of an entire new time period in the Star Wars universe! The main characters specifically the Jedi are lovable and I grew attached to them quickly while on the flip side the Nihil are a grotesque group of scavengers and world destroyers you love to hate, especially the Eye of the Nihil who is a very mysterious character。 I felt the book started with a little of a slow start but as it picked up I understood why it set things up the way it did。 The en Light of the Jedi is an interesting perspective of an entire new time period in the Star Wars universe! This is both a solid Star Wars novel and a disappointment。 The disappointing part isn't really the fault of Charles Soule (a fine writer of novels and comics), but Star Wars itself。 The High Republic is the new part of Star Wars lore that Lucasfilm has carved out。 And unfortunately, despite being set 200 years before the events of the prequel movies, it all feels exactly the same。 This is the same problem I have with the Old Republic (that area of Star Wars lore 800 something years before the pr This is both a solid Star Wars novel and a disappointment。 The disappointing part isn't really the fault of Charles Soule (a fine writer of novels and comics), but Star Wars itself。 The High Republic is the new part of Star Wars lore that Lucasfilm has carved out。 And unfortunately, despite being set 200 years before the events of the prequel movies, it all feels exactly the same。 This is the same problem I have with the Old Republic (that area of Star Wars lore 800 something years before the prequels) and it's infuriating。 The Star Wars universe is so rigid, so set in stone, that stories are all forced to hit the same beats, with the same language, and same technology。 The differences in this era are there, but they're really, really minor (small enough that if you're not paying attention, you'll miss them), which is a real shame。 So again, not really Soule's fault, but。。。yeesh。 Can you imagine how dull human history would be if we never changed at all over 200 years? Now imagine a thousand。 Get with it, Star Wars。 。。。more

I loved almost everything about this book! My only problem was how suddenly it felt like it ended。 I know there is a sequel to the book, but I wouldn’t of minded a more climactic cliffhanger。 But seriously my only problem with the book。 And it’s only a small problem。

You know, when the stories all have new characters that you aren't grown up with, I'm not sure that lack of continuity helps。 Reading seemed less enjoyable even as the story was fairly well put together。 Guess that's what happens when you traverse back far in the timeline。 Still it'll be interesting to see what else happens in the series with the remaining characters。 You know, when the stories all have new characters that you aren't grown up with, I'm not sure that lack of continuity helps。 Reading seemed less enjoyable even as the story was fairly well put together。 Guess that's what happens when you traverse back far in the timeline。 Still it'll be interesting to see what else happens in the series with the remaining characters。 。。。more

As others have said, this book is front loaded。 The disaster at the beginning is fantastic, combining the best of "asteroid impact" movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact with the best of Star Wars。The new generation of Jedi that is introduced in this new start to Old Republic/High Republic Star Wars is fun。 Avar is well developed and a cool character。The multiple points of view can be jarring, but I think author Charles Soule pulls it off well。 This likely will have to be the style for all book As others have said, this book is front loaded。 The disaster at the beginning is fantastic, combining the best of "asteroid impact" movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact with the best of Star Wars。The new generation of Jedi that is introduced in this new start to Old Republic/High Republic Star Wars is fun。 Avar is well developed and a cool character。The multiple points of view can be jarring, but I think author Charles Soule pulls it off well。 This likely will have to be the style for all books in this series, even by other authors。There are large and small stories in here, and I'm more and more liking antagonist Marchion Ro as more is revealed about him。I listened to this as an audiobook, and as always Star Wars audiobooks are fantastic。 You've got John Williams' music, Ben Burtt et al's sound effects, and Marc Thompson's excellent narration。 The new music for the Nihil works and some other thematic background music works as well。 I would be curious to see if we ever get a High Republic movie, and, if so, its soundtrack takes any cues from this。Recommended for Star Wars fans。 This seems like this is the start of a huge New Jedi Order-esque mega arc of books。 I'm excited to see where it goes! 。。。more

I have always loved the Star Wars universe and especially the novels that were written about it。 My favorite titles have definitely been the ones written by Timothy Zahn but some of the new ones are nearly as good。 This book is great and it really fits into the Star Wars universe, it adds something new without distracting or detracting from the existing mythology。

It seems almost as if Soule is afraid of putting his own mark on the Star Wars universe; not much is happening in the grand scheme of things。 With that said, Light of the Jedi still has the Star Wars feeling to it, and nothing really seems out of tune with the works we know and love from before。

tldr; it’s okay!actually 3。5 but rounding down bc it took 250 pages for the actual plot to get moving。 i think maybe a bit too many characters BUT i know we had to spend time setting up this world since this is nothing anyone has seen before。 will be reading the second one!

Una historia muy fresca de los jedi en sus mejores momentos olvidandonos por un momento de los Skywalker, lo recomiendo si te gustan las historias sencillas y no tan profundas。

YASWB (Yet Another Star Wars Book)This one is the first in a series so it has to set up a lot of moving parts with unknown characters set in our familiar universe。 It's hard to grasp what's at stake and who to really care about but I'd say it's a decent book of which I would explore if I have a gap in other books。 Is it fun? Sort of。 Is the audio good, yes, as usual great production and voice acting we are all familiar with。 YASWB (Yet Another Star Wars Book)This one is the first in a series so it has to set up a lot of moving parts with unknown characters set in our familiar universe。 It's hard to grasp what's at stake and who to really care about but I'd say it's a decent book of which I would explore if I have a gap in other books。 Is it fun?
