Summary

I couldn’t give an honest review of this book because I did not finish。 I got 189 pages in and couldn’t bring myself to read another page。 I’m a pretty far right Conservative and was able to ignore, without too much irritation, the feminist “women can do anything men can do” remarks, but when the main character makes a crude comment about taking an underage male’s virginity, I couldn’t go on。 Imagine if a male protagonist, who is written to be the character you’re supposed to like, said that abo I couldn’t give an honest review of this book because I did not finish。 I got 189 pages in and couldn’t bring myself to read another page。 I’m a pretty far right Conservative and was able to ignore, without too much irritation, the feminist “women can do anything men can do” remarks, but when the main character makes a crude comment about taking an underage male’s virginity, I couldn’t go on。 Imagine if a male protagonist, who is written to be the character you’re supposed to like, said that about an underage female character? There would be TikToks by frothing women with green hair about how the book illustrates undertones of misogyny and how it’s rooted in patriarchal origins or some bologna。Forgive my outburst。 I’m just repulsed by the state of our society today。 Both men and women。As for the the actual writing style, I like the descriptive nature the author uses in creating and setting a scene。 I personally enjoy when an author richly describes a scene because I think it adds a lot of texture to what I’m reading。I don’t think the author is a bad writer, I just couldn’t enjoy a book where I could tell the author and I wouldn’t have enjoyable conversations if we ever were to meet。 。。。more

I have to get the 2nd book like right now。 For some reason (or maybe too many) I loved this book。 I loved a lot of things but need more from the central plot of the witches。 I really enjoyed reading this though。

Not going to lie I was very hesitant going into this having heard quite a few bad reviews and not really trusting the hype。。。 however I ended up enjoying Serpent & Dove way more than I was expecting。 The characters were quite annoying at first imho but quickly grew on me and the plot was fast paced and fun with high stakes and actually good villains, oh and the romance was cute too :)。 Not perfect or a literary masterpiece by any means but it ended up delivering on so many aspects that I enjoy - Not going to lie I was very hesitant going into this having heard quite a few bad reviews and not really trusting the hype。。。 however I ended up enjoying Serpent & Dove way more than I was expecting。 The characters were quite annoying at first imho but quickly grew on me and the plot was fast paced and fun with high stakes and actually good villains, oh and the romance was cute too :)。 Not perfect or a literary masterpiece by any means but it ended up delivering on so many aspects that I enjoy - I can see why so many others rate this among their favorites :) I might add - I think this book has actually renewed my interest in reading ya again which is a feat in of itself but I'm not mad about it 🙃 。。。more

3。5 stars。 rounded up because i liked reid, thank you very much。 i was so excited to read this book。 so excited。 it had everything i like in books, but it fell short。 maybe that's my own fault for setting my expectations too high, but serpent & dove didn't scratch the itch i was hoping it would。the romance was nice。 it was nothing spectacular。 it was just okay。 the banter was good at times but just felt awkward at other times。 i get that at first they were just trying to make the best of a crap 3。5 stars。 rounded up because i liked reid, thank you very much。 i was so excited to read this book。 so excited。 it had everything i like in books, but it fell short。 maybe that's my own fault for setting my expectations too high, but serpent & dove didn't scratch the itch i was hoping it would。the romance was nice。 it was nothing spectacular。 it was just okay。 the banter was good at times but just felt awkward at other times。 i get that at first they were just trying to make the best of a crappy situation, but it still felt like that towards the end of the book。 their relationship felt a little rushed towards the end, and good lord, these two have serious communication problems。 regardless, the romance was really the only thing that kept me reading。 i liked it far more than the other plot points, but i guess that's because it was the main one。 it's an interesting enough romance and i'll probably read the other books just to see where it goes。 the worldbuilding fell painfully flat。 i had no idea what was going on half the time。 the real shame is that it had so much potential to be something i was really invested in, but it was just never expanded on enough for me to care。 i really hope this changes in the rest of the series, since it could turn into something really interesting。 and i get it, you're in fantasy france, you don't have to keep throwing random french words in there。i can't decide if i'm disappointed with the characters or not。 i loved reid, but maybe that's just because i have a type of fictional men i gravitate to。 lou was pretty cool, too, but i felt like sometimes they were both pretty two dimensional。 the supporting cast was alright--nothing special, but i appreciated them。 i really liked ansel, and while i wasn't too fond of coco at first i definitely warmed up to her towards the end。 some of their development felt really rushed, though。 it was disappointing to see reid get over something towards the end so quickly, but i won't get into that because spoilers。 i just thought there would have been more tension there。it's a nice enough book。 it didn't quite live up to my expectations, but i'll still read the rest of the series if only because i'm invested in the characters。 。。。more

Coco is a badass blood witch of color and is also bi! I love her so much, and I hope we get more of Coco next book。 Ansel is my baby and must be protected! Even Beau started to grow on me in the end, especially when Coco gets under his skin。 The world building was great, and I appreciated the magic system for both types of witches。 Dames de Blanc get their magic from nature, and nature demands balance。 Dames Rouges use blood magic, so their magic comes from within。 Excited to learn more about them next book! Although there was one really steamy part (🌶️❤️‍🔥🥵) I expected there to be more the way people on here talk about this book。 It seemed pretty tame to me。 Mahurin has infused messages about how at its core, religious patriarchy is about power and control, and if you can't control a thing, you must destroy it。 We also get themes on how life isn't black and white, but many shades of gray。 I love me some morally gray characters, and Lou fits that。 Excited for the next book! 。。。more

I would have liked to read more from Reid but not too much more。 I felt like I got the gist of him lolI love it when the guy is a virgin, I find it very sweet and quite frankly hot。 I thought that the main female characters were strong and bad ass。 Tbh plot mostly progressed by information with holding, main character is hinting at things SHE obviously knows [DRAFT] I’m hovering between 3-4 stars here。 Im going to round up because I think I mostly liked it Characters were good, not flat at all! What’s the difference) Also some things were very obvious and then it was。 Brought into light all the characters were like “WHAT”Like I thought we learned that in the first chapterIt was hard to keep track of who knew they were witches and who didn’t。 The fantasy aspects were kind of confusing and a lot of plot elements just kind of didn’t make sense Like did all of the characters need to be so secretly connected? I wish that the fantasy stuff had been made more clear at the beginning because it made it confusing。 Also I thought it was weird how easily the main could “let” people she knew die but wasn’t willing to allow 27 rando people to be killed。 Like when she kept talking about avoiding unessesary deaths I felt like “what??? It seems like more people died in the first 1/4 of this book。 AND WHAT ABOUT THE FRICKEN WAR。 WHAT ABOUT HOW MANY PEOPLE DIE IN WAR”。 Not to be too much of a rationalist/utilitarian but that was a little annoying。 It wasn’t unrecoverable though, I mean the main character does also inwardly chastise herself for being selfish and cowardly and people lie about the reason they do things all the time, to themselves to others。 So it wasn’t that bad。 And while I want to agree with the main characters assessment of herself being selfish, it seems harsh to call someone selfish because they don’t want to die。 And she was nice to others so, idkI loved that the witchesI thought the mom was a bit much, like how could she have had a happy childhood with thatBook was definitely a little boring at times Worth the read, plot resolved kind of cool at the end but was slow and cloudy to get there。 BUT not a necessary read lol you’re not missing out on too much if you don’t read it 。。。more

I haven’t read in a while but after this book my obsession is big I really like this book It made me feel a bunch of different emotions which is always good and it was still a little spicy。 The reason why I’m not giving it 5 stars is because it did get a little confusing sometimes I know that might just be me。 I get like it could have been explained better but it was still a good book I finished it within three days of starting it that’s pretty crazy for me。 Now on to the second one!

It was hard to transition between the romance and the MC coming across as childish at times。"She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen" but then two pages later she apparently never brushes her hair。。。 like ever? Rating: 4 starsLou and Reid’s relationship is so cute。 It gave me Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows vibes with the witch hunter and witch falling in love with each other🥺The world building was pretty well done and the characters were well written。 It is interesting to have a character like Reid as a love interest。 Usually the main love interests are the sarcastic, flirty, mysterious guys but Reid was literally a church boy who was a virgin and did not curse lolll。 It’s so different from the ch Rating: 4 starsLou and Reid’s relationship is so cute。 It gave me Nina and Matthias from Six of Crows vibes with the witch hunter and witch falling in love with each other🥺The world building was pretty well done and the characters were well written。 It is interesting to have a character like Reid as a love interest。 Usually the main love interests are the sarcastic, flirty, mysterious guys but Reid was literally a church boy who was a virgin and did not curse lolll。 It’s so different from the characters I usually read but despite that, I still really liked his character。 I also really liked his character development throughout the book where Lou’s sarcasm and flirtatious nature has finally rubbed off on him and he is no longer the boring church boy with a stick up his ass (thank the lord) loll。I really enjoyed the symbolism throughout the book as well, especially the scene with the dead dove omg。 The plot was not anything crazy special or insane, there weren’t any crazy plot twists that had me on the edge of my seat or anything。 However, the book was very entertaining to read and I had trouble putting it down。 The characters were all so likeable and I look forward to reading the rest of this series! 。。。more
