Summary

In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J。 Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L。 Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric。

Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in the heart of Queens, where Donald and his four siblings grew up。 She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse。 She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred Jr。 and Donald。

A first-hand witness to countless holiday meals and family interactions, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humor to sometimes grim, often confounding family events。 She recounts in unsparing detail everything from her uncle Donald’s place in the family spotlight and Ivana’s penchant for re-gifting to her grandmother’s frequent injuries and illnesses and the appalling way Donald, Fred Trump’s favorite son, dismissed and derided him when he began to succumb to Alzheimer’s。

Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists, and journalists have sought to parse Donald J。 Trump’s lethal flaws。 Mary L。 Trump has the education, insight, and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick。 She alone can recount this fascinating, unnerving saga, not just because of her insider’s perspective but also because she is the only Trump willing to tell the truth about one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families。

I don’t give a star rating to non fiction as I don’t want it to feel like I am judging someone’s experience。 As for this one, nothing new from what we already know about this vile human。 I honestly don’t know what I was looking for when I picked up this one, or what I was hoping to learn about Trump。 All it did was confirm the fact that he is a trash human being。

Mary Trump can definitely write。 I had to wait a year to get this from the library, which attests to the author's strengths。 Needed to read it。 Mary Trump can definitely write。 I had to wait a year to get this from the library, which attests to the author's strengths。 Needed to read it。 。。。more

Essentially confirms my personal thoughts on the man。 Does give personal insight into how he got to be a devisive, self absorbed member of the Trump family

Better than expected。 Much more about Fred Trump Sr。 & Jr。 than Donald but draws a good image of the family dysfunction that has become a nation dysfunction, written from the perspective of a woman greatly wounded by her grandfather’s and uncle’s narcissism。

This was quite an interesting family history in which, however warranted, the author’s bitterness necessarily shines through。 I thoroughly appreciated how, even though it’s quite clear that she feels former (thank god) President Trump is a monster, she did a remarkable job of evoking empathy from the reader regarding the circumstances that shaped him as, at least initially, out of his control。I would strongly encourage everyone to read this book, if only to understand how his supporters, even no This was quite an interesting family history in which, however warranted, the author’s bitterness necessarily shines through。 I thoroughly appreciated how, even though it’s quite clear that she feels former (thank god) President Trump is a monster, she did a remarkable job of evoking empathy from the reader regarding the circumstances that shaped him as, at least initially, out of his control。I would strongly encourage everyone to read this book, if only to understand how his supporters, even now, are trapped in the myth of his greatness and demigod persona。 This book clearly demonstrates how they cannot themselves renounce him or admit that he made mistakes without in some way making themselves culpable for the outcomes of his actions。 。。。more

Interesting insights into what created this man。 Not tremendously surprising though - if you've had run-ins with this type of person before。 I found a strong theme of entitlement running through the whole book (and whole family?) which I didn't like。 It was a good look into the back story of the Trump family though。 Interesting insights into what created this man。 Not tremendously surprising though - if you've had run-ins with this type of person before。 I found a strong theme of entitlement running through the whole book (and whole family?) which I didn't like。 It was a good look into the back story of the Trump family though。 。。。more

Review of To much & never enoughWow! This book hits the nail on the head! Who could have predicted what has happened over the past four years because of the inaction and outright denial of the corona virus by the sitting president。 Very interesting & scary to see how he became the man he is and how his family developed。 Lets just we never have to deal with him in public office again!

I really enjoyed this, partially as a legitimate family memoir, and partially in a guilty-pleasure kind of way。 A decent amount here is either common knowledge or proves the simplest of speculations, but the Freddy Trump story is quiet tragic and affecting。The rest is what you’d expect: a peek inside the House to see the trash fire inside。

A sickening story of greed, scams and cruelty。 The world learned that first hand for themselves。

Insightful psychological take on Trump's mannerisms。 However, it often bordered on the expose aspect rather than fous on objective shortcomings。 A good read for anyone who thinks that the former President is solely a fool or solely a political mastermind。 Insightful psychological take on Trump's mannerisms。 However, it often bordered on the expose aspect rather than fous on objective shortcomings。 A good read for anyone who thinks that the former President is solely a fool or solely a political mastermind。 。。。more

Meh, depressing money grabbing family。

Mary Trump is articulate, intelligent and confident。 She tells of the Trump family and how Donald got to be Donald。 She did a good job on the memoir and with all the backstabbing that this family does to each other, I’m surprised she got her Aunt to talk to her about this book!

The trump family sounds like a collection of the most soulless, pathologically money obsessed individuals and this book's mere presence chills a room。 Told in the clinical, yet detailed way of a court document or a traumatic memory, this book deeply, deeply depressed me while being deeply informative of both the lives of the ultra wealthy, this ultra wealthy clan, and the lives and mental scars of both Mary Trump and Donald。 The trump family sounds like a collection of the most soulless, pathologically money obsessed individuals and this book's mere presence chills a room。 Told in the clinical, yet detailed way of a court document or a traumatic memory, this book deeply, deeply depressed me while being deeply informative of both the lives of the ultra wealthy, this ultra wealthy clan, and the lives and mental scars of both Mary Trump and Donald。 。。。more

What would it take for you to say these things about your uncle? Or any other family member? If I hated my sibling, I still wouldn't say this in public。 Donald Trump must be the worst of humanity if his niece who is a psychologist is right。 This got old real fast。 I did wonder how the Donald became such a damaged person。 I wonder more why people who like him can't be bothered to do any critical research on him。 Why? This is not really a book about Donald Trump, but rather the memoir of one member of the extended Trump family。 There isn't much that feels new or revelatory here, and the writing isn’t so great, with jarring jumps backwards in time and a certain repetitiveness to some of its takes。 This is not really a book about Donald Trump, but rather the memoir of one member of the extended Trump family。 There isn't much that feels new or revelatory here, and the writing isn’t so great, with jarring jumps backwards in time and a certain repetitiveness to some of its takes。 。。。more

Very interesting perspective - it felt like the view from a professional while also being an inside scoop。 In the beginning, the author describes how she worries she will only sound vindictive because of the position she is in, but managed to sound very much like an observer。 The writing was very dense and occasionally hard to follow, especially with the trump family's proclivity towards reusing names or using similar sounding names。 Almost the entirety of the book is truly a look into the entir Very interesting perspective - it felt like the view from a professional while also being an inside scoop。 In the beginning, the author describes how she worries she will only sound vindictive because of the position she is in, but managed to sound very much like an observer。 The writing was very dense and occasionally hard to follow, especially with the trump family's proclivity towards reusing names or using similar sounding names。 Almost the entirety of the book is truly a look into the entire trump family, while the last chapter or two really sum up how all of that led to the US Presidental response to Covid 19 in 2020。 Interesting read, glad it wasn't any longer。 。。。more

This is well written in parts but mostly boring。 The biggest flaw in the book is that it is about the Trump family in general and Donald in particular。 It confirms everything I suspected about him。5/10

Wow! I would never pay money to buy a book about this dangerous man, but I saw it at the LFL and was intrigued。 Amazing that family treats each other so poorly like they did to so many in public。 To the author… with family like that, who needs enemies?

Not massively revelatory but definitely puts meat on the bones of how Trump became the person he did。 It won't surprise you at all to know that it was in large part due to money and in large part due to parenting。 Worth a read and it's an easy one。 Not massively revelatory but definitely puts meat on the bones of how Trump became the person he did。 It won't surprise you at all to know that it was in large part due to money and in large part due to parenting。 Worth a read and it's an easy one。 。。。more

Nothing really new here, and I felt like there were jumps all over in time, which was hard to follow (I was listening to the audiobook)。 Still, an interesting story and more proof that DT was a massive ball of turds from the very beginning。

An interesting discussion on how an abusive person can raise very different people。 Fred Trump Sr was neglectful and abusive to his children。 Donald, apparently, is just like him。 Mary's experience growing up in the Trump family seemed so cold and disheartening。 There was no warmth or care given to the children。 An interesting discussion on how an abusive person can raise very different people。 Fred Trump Sr was neglectful and abusive to his children。 Donald, apparently, is just like him。 Mary's experience growing up in the Trump family seemed so cold and disheartening。 There was no warmth or care given to the children。 。。。more

This is not a good book。 It is less an expose about Donald Trump than it is a memoir about the author's father, Freddy。 The last 20 pages or so is kind of what I was expecting the rest of the book to be。 It's also not particularly well written or edited, and just kind of comes off as a disgruntled family member with an ax to grind (and I say that as someone who hates Donald Trump too)。 I'd skip this one。 This is not a good book。 It is less an expose about Donald Trump than it is a memoir about the author's father, Freddy。 The last 20 pages or so is kind of what I was expecting the rest of the book to be。 It's also not particularly well written or edited, and just kind of comes off as a disgruntled family member with an ax to grind (and I say that as someone who hates Donald Trump too)。 I'd skip this one。 。。。more

Well written and not overtly aggressive or mean, Dr Mary Trump outlines the history of the Trump family in order to give some clarity about the behaviour of the famous offspring, most notably the former reality TV star/president。 While there not really any "new" information about the former president, the book does highlight the dysfunction of the original Trump family and perhaps creates some understanding around why certain people act the way that they do。 The big thing is that this book is fo Well written and not overtly aggressive or mean, Dr Mary Trump outlines the history of the Trump family in order to give some clarity about the behaviour of the famous offspring, most notably the former reality TV star/president。 While there not really any "new" information about the former president, the book does highlight the dysfunction of the original Trump family and perhaps creates some understanding around why certain people act the way that they do。 The big thing is that this book is focussed on Dr Trump's own father and his treatment by the family, so that impacts what she chooses to tell。 You can't help but feel sorry for all of them really, especially Dr Trump's father, and for the author and her brother and mother。 In fact, if there is a real villain present, it is old man patriarch Trump, who has a lot to answer for。 This book doesn't excuse the behaviour of the characters, but gives an insight into how nature v nurture plays a big role in the future lives of children。 Easy to read, interesting and sad。 。。。more
