Summary

**THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER**

'You're amazing I could talk to you (Rahul) all day' Chris Evans

'This is a gripping new book' The Times

World-leading neuroscientist and neurosurgeon Dr Rahul Jandial draws on his years of work with patients suffering from the most extreme cases of brain damage, disorders and illnesses to reveal what they can tell us about the science of the mind。

From a languages teacher who has to choose whether to lose her ability to speak Spanish or English after brain surgery, to a former TV exec, now homeless, who discovers that his life-altering despondency is the result of a tumour, to a fainting teen who learns that deep breathing can mean the difference between life or death, these stories uncover the secret workings of the brain。

Blending cutting-edge research and beautiful storytelling, Life Lessons from a Brain Surgeon is a vital resource on the best ways to boost your memory, control stress and emotions, minimize pain, unleash your creativity, raise smart kids and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's。 This is a deeply practical and readable book, which will take you on an expedition through the anatomy of the most fascinating - and mysterious - of organs。

Genuinely fascinating book, with personal and patient anecdotes mixed in with facts and myth-busting about the brain。 The author is an engaging writer and his advice is largely very pragmatic。 Plenty to think about on improving your neurological health (and while much is commonsense, it nevertheless helpful to have it written out so clearly)。

One of my favourite books, invaluable lessons。

A good overview of how our brains work told through Rahul's professional stories。As someone here mentioned though, would want to see more recommendations and tips on how to keep the brain healthy。 A good overview of how our brains work told through Rahul's professional stories。As someone here mentioned though, would want to see more recommendations and tips on how to keep the brain healthy。 。。。more

I think this is the same book I listened to in audio format titled, "Neurofitness: A Brain Surgeon's Secrets to Boost Performance and Unleash Creativity" by the same author。 It was entertaining enough to wash dishes by, which is the number one quality I look for in an audiobook。 Some of it felt like he was a bit too excited to talk about himself, reminiscent of Jordan Peterson's long intro, but his story of dropping out of college before becoming a surgeon is just what a mom needs to hear someti I think this is the same book I listened to in audio format titled, "Neurofitness: A Brain Surgeon's Secrets to Boost Performance and Unleash Creativity" by the same author。 It was entertaining enough to wash dishes by, which is the number one quality I look for in an audiobook。 Some of it felt like he was a bit too excited to talk about himself, reminiscent of Jordan Peterson's long intro, but his story of dropping out of college before becoming a surgeon is just what a mom needs to hear sometimes。 Relating to brain health, his advice seems credible, if not sometimes obvious (getting enough sleep is good for you? whaaa??), but when he veered into areas outside his expertise, it felt like just a guy at a block party waxing philosophical, even if I happened to agree with him。 My son, overhearing, asked, "Why are you listening to mom advice from a dad?" Exactly。 。。。more

O carte foarte bine documentată din punct de vedere al studiilor clinice, cu exemple concrete și povești interesante, din viața unui neurochirurg, dar și cu sfaturi utile pentru sănătatea creierului。 O voi reciti cu siguranță, la un moment dat。

One of the best book which I read for people who interested in brain。 I am a little bit more smarter than before。

Well I haven't necessarily gained that much new knowledge from this book but it was without a doubt a pleasant read that helped me get out of a reading slumber all the while having fun and reviewing the latest advancements in neuroscience。 Recommended! An excellent yet simple explanation of neuroscience and neurobiology。 This book has tips that we all know。 However, by explaining how everything works and how these things affect the brain makes you realise and acknowledge the importance of them。

I did it! Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I finished a book。 With so many uninteresting yet life consuming activities I’ve been sucked into this past year, I’m so glad I chose this book to get back into the groove! This 600 page book is not for the light hearted, there are so many brain surgeries that is described in detail where at times I wanted to adopt “Ignorance is bliss” mantra but at the same time, the book also breaks so many myths we find ourselves to believe in。Thank you to the I did it! Excellent book with great practical suggestions to maintain cognitive health。 Learned that Duolingo is the best free language course available online, among many other things。

трошки статистики/досліджень, трошки self-help, трошки історій з життя/роботи - все збалансовано і особливо без води。 Легко читається/слухається, хоч особливо нічого екстранового для себе не почув。

Not at all what I was expecting。 I thought this was a book that captured the stories with good life lessons people would tell the author right before they went into surgery。。。 Turns out it's a book about the brain, what you can do for your brain and why the brain is what it is。 Fascinating insights about the various surgeries and procedures the author has completed and really good, scientific information provided。 Not at all what I was expecting。 I thought this was a book that captured the stories with good life lessons people would tell the author right before they went into surgery。。。 Turns out it's a book about the brain, what you can do for your brain and why the brain is what it is。 Fascinating insights about the various surgeries and procedures the author has completed and really good, scientific information provided。 。。。more

I must say that I very much enjoyed my time reading this book。 Professionals might read this and think that some concepts or procedures are oversimplified but, for us Non-Mds, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the fascinating world of our brain and body。 Reading about his brain surgery experiences while also learning about how to prevent us from getting on the operating table, was something I really valued。 Many books just present to you the problem or the situation but without any po I must say that I very much enjoyed my time reading this book。 Professionals might read this and think that some concepts or procedures are oversimplified but, for us Non-Mds, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the fascinating world of our brain and body。 Reading about his brain surgery experiences while also learning about how to prevent us from getting on the operating table, was something I really valued。 Many books just present to you the problem or the situation but without any possible solution or ways to prevent it。 Similar to me you might not agree with ALL the recommendations, that’s natural, we don’t need to agree on everything。 Overall reading the book left me with important knowledge which I didn’t have before and that’s what I like to call great bonus for my cognitive maintenance。 。。。more

This is a great book, interesting and attention keeping。 There's a fair bit of medical jargon but its presented in an accessible way。 The author makes insightful observations of life and learning, peppered in alongside stories of patients with complex or rare brain issues。 This is a great book, interesting and attention keeping。 There's a fair bit of medical jargon but its presented in an accessible way。 The author makes insightful observations of life and learning, peppered in alongside stories of patients with complex or rare brain issues。 。。。more

If one has already read authors like dr。 Norman Doidge or dr。 Ramachandran, this book won't bring much new information; but as a starter into the mysterious world of the brain, it's a nice reading, and the neuro-nerdy sections and the ones debunking myths are quite fun。 Also, the patient cases of a neurosurgeon are always fascinating。 If one has already read authors like dr。 Norman Doidge or dr。 Ramachandran, this book won't bring much new information; but as a starter into the mysterious world of the brain, it's a nice reading, and the neuro-nerdy sections and the ones debunking myths are quite fun。 Also, the patient cases of a neurosurgeon are always fascinating。 。。。more

3。5 is a more accurate rating as I enjoyed all the read and all of the anecdotes and personal and patient stories he shared。 It was nice to have practices such as meditation and intermittent fasting among other current “trends” support by a neurosurgeon。

Pretty average read, some interesting insights but not quite as fun facts packed as it sounds。

Transparent in a style of a car mechanic admitting he had no idea why your engine keeps going, but does miracles and keeps it going。 Nice read, good tips for keeping your brain healthy, but somehow I'd read it as a rather anecdotal take on the subject。 Author's style makes all the difference I guess ;-) Transparent in a style of a car mechanic admitting he had no idea why your engine keeps going, but does miracles and keeps it going。 Nice read, good tips for keeping your brain healthy, but somehow I'd read it as a rather anecdotal take on the subject。 Author's style makes all the difference I guess ;-) 。。。more
