Summary

Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison。。。

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve。 She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia。

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster。 But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison。

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting。 Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control。 Her life is threatened again and choices must be made。 But this time the outcomes aren't so clear。。。

Poison Study is similar to so many other YA fantasy books。 Not super original, but I didn't care I loved it! Yelena is a great MC。 And I'm excited to see her growth in the next book。 Valek hasn't won me over yet but close。 Valek and Yelena's relationship is missing something but I can quite put my finger on what it is。 I love love loved Janco and Ari and I need more stories of them。 Oh and Irys too, she's an interesting character。 Fun book! Started off slow, but had a grip on me eventually! Though there were barely any romance, i found myself intrigued by the politics, spies, secrets, assassins, poisons and magic surrounding the territory of Ixia。 Yelena , the mc, developed as a character from a scared, dependent girl to a strong, courageous woman。 Valek is an amazing hero and secondary characters like Rand, Iris, Janco and Ari hold a special place in my heart<3。 Definitely looking forward to reading Magic Study! As a reminder of my Started off slow, but had a grip on me eventually! This was perfectly fine。 More satisfyingly poisonous than City of Lies, and with a reasonably lively plot。 I liked the complexity of the military dictatorship, which in some ways seems to be an improvement over the previous monarchy that it deposed, and in other ways is, well, a military dictatorship。 I can't decide whether to be charmed or offended by the fact that chocolate is a substance that renders you vulnerable to magical influence and so must be banned, but I did love the conversations i This was perfectly fine。 More satisfyingly poisonous than City of Lies, and with a reasonably lively plot。 I liked the complexity of the military dictatorship, which in some ways seems to be an improvement over the previous monarchy that it deposed, and in other ways is, well, a military dictatorship。 I can't decide whether to be charmed or offended by the fact that chocolate is a substance that renders you vulnerable to magical influence and so must be banned, but I did love the conversations in which people talk about how much they like it and wonder whether it's addicting or not。 I don't love how the trans character is described with inaccurate pronouns when we see him before he transitioned, even though during that whole period he is repeatedly stating that he is not a woman and has been born in the wrong body。 The author has him explicitly say that he's a man, but then uses female pronouns the whole time, as if the pronoun is determined by how other characters see him at the time rather than how he defines himself, which isn't great。 I wonder whether that's because it was published in 2005? The book is otherwise entirely respectful of this dude's identity in present-day scenes, and language for discussing transgender issues has definitely changed over the last decade and a half, so maybe this is just clumsy, rather than ignorant。I also don't love the fact that our young female protagonist's traumatic backstory has to include rape--why must they always include rape?--especially given that there is a perfectly plot-relevant reason to give her trauma that doesn't at all require sexual assault; and I really don't love the obligatory romance between 30-something captor and something-teen captive who is kept around because she's been fed poisons that make her physically dependent on daily medicines。 We see it all from her perspective, so she certainly thinks she's consenting to the relationship, but my dear: The guy is 33 and you're a teenager, and he's simultaneously your (1) boss; (2) mentor; and (3) CAPTOR。 Good grief--these are not the power dynamics of a healthy relationship! On this basis alone I don't think I'll finish the series。 I don't trust the author to write sensibly about relationships and consent, or to avoid gratuitous sexual assault。 There are plenty of other books that don't include that, and this one is not good enough in the other respects to overcome that line。 。。。more

Great storyI saw this book recommended on another author's social media page and decided to give it a try。 I'm very glad that I did。 The former kingdom of Ixia is now under a strict military dictatorship run by a Commander。 Not everyone is happy with the Commander's rule so he requires a food taster to keep him from being assassinated by poison。 The food tasters are always chosen from among the condemned, which is how Yelena gets the post。 It seems like it should be a straightforward story but Great storyI saw this book recommended on another author's social media page and decided to give it a try。 I'm very glad that I did。 The former kingdom of Ixia is now under a strict military dictatorship run by a Commander。 Not everyone is happy with the Commander's rule so he requires a food taster to keep him from being assassinated by poison。 The food tasters are always chosen from among the condemned, which is how Yelena gets the post。 It seems like it should be a straightforward story but there are some fun and unexpected twists。 I'm looking forward to the next book in the series。 。。。more

I enjoyed this - thoroughly entertaining and the characters were actually interesting。 Good world building and the detail around poisons were intriguing。 The downside for me were a few elements came out of nowhere I。e the romance didn’t make sense to me。 Also the magic felt like an afterthought。 I appreciate it will probably be explained further in the series, but In this case did not tempt me enough to continue。 An additional layer of complexity was needed to create a more fully fleshed world, I enjoyed this - thoroughly entertaining and the characters were actually interesting。 Good world building and the detail around poisons were intriguing。 The downside for me were a few elements came out of nowhere I。e the romance didn’t make sense to me。 Also the magic felt like an afterthought。 I appreciate it will probably be explained further in the series, but In this case did not tempt me enough to continue。 An additional layer of complexity was needed to create a more fully fleshed world, some meat to the bones of you will。 。。。more

This review is has some elements that are specific to the most recent kindle version that is listed under the Chronicles of Ixia。I feel like I need to write a positive review because this is a good book and a good series。 It does have a YA flavor to it, I will admit but it also has some very mature themes。 I like Yelena a lot。 I've read the entire original trilogy (the author has continued this series extensively) and quite a few of the newsletter stories。 I think Poison Study is still my favori This review is has some elements that are specific to the most recent kindle version that is listed under the Chronicles of Ixia。I feel like I need to write a positive review because this is a good book and a good series。 It does have a YA flavor to it, I will admit but it also has some very mature themes。 I like Yelena a lot。 I've read the entire original trilogy (the author has continued this series extensively) and quite a few of the newsletter stories。 I think Poison Study is still my favorite。 Yelena is a strong heroine who has been through lots of stuff and manages to be intelligent and fierce。 The reviews that say it all wraps up, it DOESN'T。。。it just doesn't end on a cliffhanger。 There are something like 9 books in this series now, at least three that focus on THIS main character, so it doesn't wrap up。So why 4 stars? Because I wasted money on this book。 I already have it in paperback, audible, and it turns out the original kindle。 The original kindle was labeled the Soulfinder series, now it is the Ixia Chronicles and so it did not show up as being in my library。 That is all on amazon, not on the author (I think)。 。。。more

It was a good read。YELENA is a very thoughtful character, spoiled too。VALEK I always picture him a bad boy, he's loyalties to THE COMMANDER will get himself killed one day。 He'll have to decide YELENA or THE COMMANDER。The plot was great and all but something was missing in this book。 It didn't intrigue me even a little bit。 I was dying to get this book read to end。 Am not going to read the other books in this series It was a good read。YELENA is a very thoughtful character, spoiled too。VALEK I always picture him a bad boy, he's loyalties to THE COMMANDER will get himself killed one day。 He'll have to decide YELENA or THE COMMANDER。The plot was great and all but something was missing in this book。 It didn't intrigue me even a little bit。 I was dying to get this book read to end。 Am not going to read the other books in this series 。。。more

This series。 This book。 This is really what started it all for me。 From here my obsession only grew。I have read this book countless times, only to come to the same conclusion each time。 This is an incredibly orginal and well thought out book。 The order of events perfectly helps create this unknown world and establish the characters。 I think the plot is the real driver of this book which in fantasy I find to be rare。 The characters are what makes the story happen in so many fantasy books。 However This series。 This book。 This is really what started it all for me。 From here my obsession only grew。I have read this book countless times, only to come to the same conclusion each time。 This is an incredibly orginal and well thought out book。 The order of events perfectly helps create this unknown world and establish the characters。 I think the plot is the real driver of this book which in fantasy I find to be rare。 The characters are what makes the story happen in so many fantasy books。 However I find this to be the other way round。 The story idea is such an orginal concept and the plot surrounding it builds the characters in such a way you just have to fall in love with them。 There is not an aspect to this book I can fault。 The storyline is innovated and engaged。 All characters feel properly introduced and as if they have a purpose within the book。 The world is intriguing and well thoughtout。 This is one of the most underrated fantasy novels I've ever read。 I wish there was a way to force people to read it just so they can experience the joy I felt reading this book。 。。。more

Probably 3。5 stars。 Pleasantly surprised, better written than I thought it would be, some nice plot points, but the romance felt shoehorned in。 Will probably read the next book in the series…probably

By no means is this a quality book but it’s a good trashy read, the romance seemed rushed at the end and altogether slightly ridiculous but oh well lolWhile I’ve only read half of one Sarah j mass book I get the vibe that lots of elements of tog are v v similar to this book despite this book being published over 5 years before but both use v common tropes so it could just be a coincidence…………TW: kidnapping, r*pe, torture

Kristin

This was fine。 The ending felt rushed

I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars。 The story was solid。 The characters were developed mostly well, though it felt a bit lacking in the sense that I felt that I didn't spend enough time with the characters to get to know them, so any reasonable decisions they made, I had a hard time empathizing。 The book felt too short for the amount that happened and there were some parts where it could've definitely spent more time to flesh out characters more。 I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 stars。 The story was solid。 The characters were developed mostly well, though it felt a bit lacking in the sense that I felt that I didn't spend enough time with the characters to get to know them, so any reasonable decisions they made, I had a hard time empathizing。 The book felt too short for the amount that happened and there were some parts where it could've definitely spent more time to flesh out characters more。 。。。more

I think I’ve been let down by the hype 😅It was good but I wasn’t as enthralled as I wanted to be and it didn’t live up to the insane hype I’ve seen。 I mean, it’s quite old now, I get that, the standard of writing has changed, maybe that’s why I struggled with it? There just wasn’t enough insight into the characters thoughts and feelings that I really wanted。 The timeline seemed strange and the flow between scenes wasn’t very smooth either。 Now… the love interest。 I’m not sure how I feel about it I think I’ve been let down by the hype 😅It was good but I wasn’t as enthralled as I wanted to be and it didn’t live up to the insane hype I’ve seen。 I mean, it’s quite old now, I get that, the standard of writing has changed, maybe that’s why I struggled with it? She’s literally still a teenager? I was confused who the villain was for like 95% of this book too。 Maybe that was the goal but it annoyed me a bit。 Also the Commander。 I’m so confused。 Are they transgender? That’s the vibe I’m getting, like saying they’re a woman but want to be seen as a man… but some of the language used like them saying it’s a curse or a mutation seems… yikes。 I could be completely wrong here but that’s what it seemed like。 If I’m wrong please feel free to clarify!! I’ll keep reading the series but I’m not sure I’m going to love it like I wanted and was hoping to 😅 。。。more
