Summary

Explore a story told across the millennia that delves deep into a pair of fascinating necron characters, their relationship and their plans for the galaxy。

Before the being called the Emperor revealed Himself, before the rise of the aeldari, before the necrontyr traded their flesh for immortal metal, the world was born in violence。Even when they inhabited bodies of flesh, Trazyn the Infinite and Orikan the Diviner were polar opposites。 Trazyn, a collector of historical oddities, presides over a gallery full of the most dangerous artefacts – and people – of the galactic past。 Orikan, a chronomancer without peer, draws zodiacs that predict and manipulate the future。 But when an artefact emerges that may hold the key to the necrons’ next evolution, these two obsessives enter a multi-millennia game of cat and mouse that ends civilisations, reshapes timelines, and changes both forever。 As riddles unwind and ancient secrets are revealed, the question remains: will their feud save the necron race or destroy it?

Statler and Waldorf。。。 IN SPACE!!!The actual score would be a 3。5, I really enjoyed the characterizations of both Trazyn and Orikan and the overall plot was great but。。。 I really struggled to keep on track with the book, some of the time I had no idea what was going on and had to read a summary to keep up with the story。 There is alot of Necron jargon that if you aren't super familiar with the lore you can get lost with exactly what is happening。A lot more comedy than I expected too which was fu Statler and Waldorf。。。 IN SPACE!!!The actual score would be a 3。5, I really enjoyed the characterizations of both Trazyn and Orikan and the overall plot was great but。。。 I really struggled to keep on track with the book, some of the time I had no idea what was going on and had to read a summary to keep up with the story。 There is alot of Necron jargon that if you aren't super familiar with the lore you can get lost with exactly what is happening。A lot more comedy than I expected too which was fun。 。。。more

This is surprisingly one of the funniest books I've read this year。 The initial premise is set across ten thousand years, between two necrons who are immortal robots with a bizarre feud over an object。 It's strange, hilarious, and engaging。 I loved everything about this the only reason that its four stars rather than five is that I constantly had to look up the lore of Warhammer through Wikipedia due to not knowing half the names/events in the book。 Still it's a fantastic read and a starting poi This is surprisingly one of the funniest books I've read this year。 The initial premise is set across ten thousand years, between two necrons who are immortal robots with a bizarre feud over an object。 It's strange, hilarious, and engaging。 I loved everything about this the only reason that its four stars rather than five is that I constantly had to look up the lore of Warhammer through Wikipedia due to not knowing half the names/events in the book。 Still it's a fantastic read and a starting point if you want to know more about the necrons。 。。。more

I went into this book not knowing a lot about Necrons and not really expecting much from it, but my curiosity had been piqued by some comments online about what a great read it was so I thought it was worth a shot。While I was reading it the most surprising aspect was how damn funny it was without ever overdoing it, managing to create this interesting and humorous rivalry between the main characters that was also treated completely seriously and had real stakes for both of them。 The catty, backbi I went into this book not knowing a lot about Necrons and not really expecting much from it, but my curiosity had been piqued by some comments online about what a great read it was so I thought it was worth a shot。While I was reading it the most surprising aspect was how damn funny it was without ever overdoing it, managing to create this interesting and humorous rivalry between the main characters that was also treated completely seriously and had real stakes for both of them。 The catty, backbiting squabbling combined with the near immortality of the pair and the millennia over which the story takes place also helped sell the bizarre nature of the Necron's existence, the problems it posed to each of them and their own view on how to resolve it。The book did really on the reader having a pretty widespread understanding of the 40k setting and I feel like I might have had an easier time with some of the opening chapters if I'd know a little more Necron lore, or at the very least known a little more about Trayzn other than "oh, he's that one Necron that shows up in Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2 cutscenes"。I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely keep an eye out for any other books that the author writes in the 40k universe。 。。。more

I loved this book- it might be one of my favorite books of this type I have ever read。 It helps that I love art and archaeology, so I especially appreciate Trazen and his ridiculousness。 It was entertaining and exciting and fun the whole way through。 Highly recommend。

This a truly wonderful warhammer book I'd recommend even to friends who aren't too familiar with the setting。It was witty, fun and exciting, fleshing out the necrons in a new way。It sets their thinking, society and agendas in a natural and interesting way。I can only hope another book like this about necrons comes out。 This a truly wonderful warhammer book I'd recommend even to friends who aren't too familiar with the setting。It was witty, fun and exciting, fleshing out the necrons in a new way。It sets their thinking, society and agendas in a natural and interesting way。I can only hope another book like this about necrons comes out。 。。。more

This book is unique among all the other 40k novels I have read。 No Astartes, for starters。 The eponymous characters are Necrons, a species of which I knew very little before reading this。 Also, stand aside, Ciaphas Cain, Trazyn and Orikan are funnier than you by miles。 All "the Blood Ravens steal everything" jokes are now canceled。 They only WISH they could have collections like Trazyn the Infinite。 Picture Neil Simon writing Necrons and you have this book。 It's about two bitchy old guys in meta This book is unique among all the other 40k novels I have read。 No Astartes, for starters。 The eponymous characters are Necrons, a species of which I knew very little before reading this。 Also, stand aside, Ciaphas Cain, Trazyn and Orikan are funnier than you by miles。 All "the Blood Ravens steal everything" jokes are now canceled。 They only WISH they could have collections like Trazyn the Infinite。 Picture Neil Simon writing Necrons and you have this book。 It's about two bitchy old guys in metal shells slap-fighting each other in between one-liners and taking each other to court。 。。。more

The highest 3 star recommendation I can give。 I really enjoyed the main characters and the story, but there were waaaaay too many needless battles thrown in here。 To the detriment of the pacing。 Don't get me wrong: I looooove 40k and the insane, sprawling battles in a lot of the books。 However, they felt so out of place here。 By the end of the book, it was really starting to drag。 The highest 3 star recommendation I can give。 I really enjoyed the main characters and the story, but there were waaaaay too many needless battles thrown in here。 To the detriment of the pacing。 Don't get me wrong: I looooove 40k and the insane, sprawling battles in a lot of the books。 However, they felt so out of place here。 By the end of the book, it was really starting to drag。 。。。more

For a Black Library novel, The Infinite and the Divine is an excellent read。 Genuinely funny and more often than not moving, Rath's tale is one of bitter rivalry between two practically godly not-so-robotic beings who have nothing but time to kill and regrets of old to answer, and set aflame a small corner of the galaxy while doing so。 The characterization of our two necrons "protagonist" is masterful, hinting at hidden depths seldom brushed upon in your usual w40k novel。 There is, behind the ra For a Black Library novel, The Infinite and the Divine is an excellent read。 Genuinely funny and more often than not moving, Rath's tale is one of bitter rivalry between two practically godly not-so-robotic beings who have nothing but time to kill and regrets of old to answer, and set aflame a small corner of the galaxy while doing so。 The characterization of our two necrons "protagonist" is masterful, hinting at hidden depths seldom brushed upon in your usual w40k novel。 There is, behind the rather expansive battle sequences and the more conventional aspects of a story set in this universe, an underlying meditation on the meaninglessness of time, the cost of immortality, purpose, wistfulness of the past and longing of the future - musings that are at the core of the ultimately nuanced spite that divides the forward-looking Orikan and the conservative, past-dwelling Trazyn。 Here lies the genius of this novel which, through a plot firstly meant to deliver the entertainment one expects to receive when consuming what is for all intents and purposes litterature written for the sake of advertisement, actually delivers a tale honed with unexpected literary qualities。 For Robert Rath proves himself to be a genuine writer and a good author : one with an elegant way with words, a strong sense of plot, full understanding and control of and over the characters he employs, excellent skill in dialogue writing and a very real care for his craft。 Interestingly enough, the tribulation of two murderous robots questing for meaning and Rath's first novel entry in the Black Library is a must-read for fans of the license who tire of novels lacking a soul。 。。。more

I generally enjoy the new Necron lore。 I enjoyed the Zandrekh short story and how Necrons can be seen as immensely powerful figures in their culture with influence over billions of lives and the galaxy on a cosmic scale。 Their depiction as haughty, flippant aristocrats can be used to humanize them to a certain extent。 BUT, I also think this is we’re many readers can miss how horrifying Necrons can be。 In the same way that the 40K setting interprets politics and religion and is sometimes mistaken I generally enjoy the new Necron lore。 I enjoyed the Zandrekh short story and how Necrons can be seen as immensely powerful figures in their culture with influence over billions of lives and the galaxy on a cosmic scale。 Their depiction as haughty, flippant aristocrats can be used to humanize them to a certain extent。 BUT, I also think this is we’re many readers can miss how horrifying Necrons can be。 In the same way that the 40K setting interprets politics and religion and is sometimes mistaken as promoting certain ideologies, Necron affairs are as bad, if not worse, in their own ways。 So, yes, these aristos can be amusing but they are also beings of cosmic Lovecraftian horror。 。。。more

A rivalry through out the ages5 out of 5, two Necrons battle each other through out millennia, the two rivals come together to defeat a common enemy。 This is a 40k book that is not particularly grim dark and even humorous at times, I thoroughly enjoyed it。

Quite simply one of the best 40K books I have read in the last 5 years。 He has managed to make me want to learn more about the Necrons and begin to like them。

Top 3 warhammer 40k books ever made。 Would highly recommend

If you’re a fan of Warhammer 40k, a fan of Necrons and a fan of the characters you could enjoy this book。 I found it a bit tedious and that it relied a heavily on prior knowledge of what’s going on and who’s who in the 40k universe。

Utterly mad。 Hugely entertaining。 Really not sure what else to say。Tonally it is so different from the wider Black Library oeuvre, but it is brilliant。 It is about time 40K had a few more laughs。

This is the first Black Library book that I’ve read that could’ve been a novel without its tie in with the Warhammer universe。It’s also the first one where I will miss spending time with the characters because the book is over。

Partway through I knew this was an easy 5-star read。 Loved the characters in this book, they were very distinct and it was so much fun to follow their antics。 The audiobook in particular (read by Richard Reed) has fantastic narration, unique voices to each character and kept you hooked all the way through。 Fave 40k book so far! 5*

There's so much I could say and so little that hasn't been said。 This book's got the humor, the Necron politics, space battles, ground battles, sea battles。 It's so refreshing to see almost zero Imperium in a Warhammer 40K book, and to explore the civilization of a species that has become totally machine and almost completely immortal。 Their attitudes, traditions, and behaviors all fit in with the lore while showing off a feud that makes sense but is still very innovative。 Two grumpy old scienti There's so much I could say and so little that hasn't been said。 This book's got the humor, the Necron politics, space battles, ground battles, sea battles。 It's so refreshing to see almost zero Imperium in a Warhammer 40K book, and to explore the civilization of a species that has become totally machine and almost completely immortal。 Their attitudes, traditions, and behaviors all fit in with the lore while showing off a feud that makes sense but is still very innovative。 Two grumpy old scientists fighting, suing, and backstabbing each other for the entire history of the Imperium and over something that the good 'ol gold and skull boyz never even know is there。Unfortunately, this is the last WH40K book I'll be buying for the foreseeable future。 GW's attitude towards its fanbase has discouraged me from further purchases from their IP。 。。。more

An interesting look at the not-so-unstoppable Necron。 Outside of the story itself, it provides an interesting perspective and does some welcome world building for the empire of often voiceless spooky death machines。 Rivalry, politics, prophecy, and Trazyn being Trazyn。

It is a really great book。 It makes us deeply indulge and develop and understanding for the metallic robot like beings, known as necrons。 A great narrative for a warhammer book with clever grim dark theme and witty comedy 。 The only bad thing I found was the epilogue。 The epilogue completely shatters the build up for the story and brings it back to a stagnant state going back to square one and a disregard for the whole story。

This book focuses on the rivalry between two immortal necrontyr (think soulless ancient Egyptian robots with absurdly advanced technology)。 The conflict between the scholar and the mystic plays out over millenia, making for a slower more thoughtful plot than usual in WH40k (though there are still plenty of action set pieces involving humans, eldar, orks, and more)。 Warhammer 40k will never be great literature, but this is better than most。

I never actually was into necrons and since the author was not known for previous Warhammer novels my expectations were quite low。 But to say the least I was surprised。 I was enthralled and awed by the story arc。 I was uplifted by the subtle humor, and came to apotheosis from all the references and cross-references built into the text。 Here, it seemed that Terry Pratchett met Ridley Scott。 The story of two old rivalling nerds, one being a humanitarian and another being a STEM, old as a world, no I never actually was into necrons and since the author was not known for previous Warhammer novels my expectations were quite low。 But to say the least I was surprised。 I was enthralled and awed by the story arc。 I was uplifted by the subtle humor, and came to apotheosis from all the references and cross-references built into the text。 Here, it seemed that Terry Pratchett met Ridley Scott。 The story of two old rivalling nerds, one being a humanitarian and another being a STEM, old as a world, now encased in eternal, cosmic necrodermis。 You see millenia passing by, and get a new perspective on immortality and resultant values。 The book had so much life in it that I doubt that there can be another necron book like this one。But mr。 Rath surprised me once。 I hope he will be able to do it again, with necrons or with other xeno races。 。。。more
