I’ve read several Dinah Jefferies books and always enjoy them。 Daughters of War is no exception。 Set towards the end of the second world war in rural France, three sisters must keep moving forward when they see their beloved village turned upside down by events of the occupation。 Helene, Elise and Florence are living in their mother’s family home in a little village called Sainte-Cecile。 Helene is the eldest and feels her role to be the protector of the family, Elise takes too many risks and th I’ve read several Dinah Jefferies books and always enjoy them。 Daughters of War is no exception。 Set towards the end of the second world war in rural France, three sisters must keep moving forward when they see their beloved village turned upside down by events of the occupation。 Helene, Elise and Florence are living in their mother’s family home in a little village called Sainte-Cecile。 Helene is the eldest and feels her role to be the protector of the family, Elise takes too many risks and the youngest Florence cooks, gardens and makes their house feel a home。 Through the eyes of the three sisters, we meet the other residents of the village, read the gorgeous description of the village itself and the surrounding areas as well as meeting outsiders in which some will be friends and others foes。 There is so much to offer in this novel, once I began reading it, I couldn’t put it down。 I needed to know what would happen to the sisters。 Would the people that came into their lives help them, hurt them, betray them? The men that became part of their lives, were they genuine or not。 There was quite a bit of intrigue, suspense and romance。 Lucky for us this is the first book of a trilogy and I can’t wait to read the second part。 I really want to see what happens to these brave sisters and where their roads will lead them after this。 Thank you Netgalley and HarperCollins UK for allowing me to have an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my unbiased review。 。。。more

Bittersweet tale of three sisters in wartime, lives forever changed by old secrets, and relationships torn apart by the war。 Particularly loved the youngest sister Florence, who buried herself in her garden and in cooking for those she loves。 Wonderful reminder of the power of love and forgiveness, of excruciating choices in the face of death, and that relationship is what counts。 Loved it”。 💙💐

Dinah Jefferies has written a fascinating story about life in occupied France during World War II。 Her main characters are three sisters: Helene, Elise and Florence, who despite growing up in England, have been deposited in a cottage in rural France to fend for themselves while their mother stayed in England。What is interesting is that Helene is naturally a protector, Elise a rebel and Florence someone who nurtures and these tendencies play a big role in what they do during the occupation。 There Dinah Jefferies has written a fascinating story about life in occupied France during World War II。 Her main characters are three sisters: Helene, Elise and Florence, who despite growing up in England, have been deposited in a cottage in rural France to fend for themselves while their mother stayed in England。What is interesting is that Helene is naturally a protector, Elise a rebel and Florence someone who nurtures and these tendencies play a big role in what they do during the occupation。 There is the ongoing problem of rationing, being cautious about everyday life, fear of the Germans and helping the the Resistance but as you move through the narrative, the sisters have to face tougher and at time horrifying challenges which tests every part of resolve they may have to keep on going。Although I found one part of the plot a stretch too far in terms of its coincidence (won't provide a spoiler), the novel does build and draw you in to the characters。 Of course there is romance gained and romance lost - but there is also a romance that although blossoming, may or may not ever be able to grow。A very easy and compelling read。 。。。more

Daughters of War is the first book in a family saga set in the last two years of WWII。 It follows the lives of three sisters living in a small village in the Dordogne which is part of Vichy France。 The setting of this story is brilliant。 The village of Sante Cecile and its inhabitants really comes alive as well as the area around the village。 The narrative is split between the three sisters and at first, I found it difficult to really feel involved with them。 However, as the story progressed and Daughters of War is the first book in a family saga set in the last two years of WWII。 It follows the lives of three sisters living in a small village in the Dordogne which is part of Vichy France。 The setting of this story is brilliant。 The village of Sante Cecile and its inhabitants really comes alive as well as the area around the village。 The narrative is split between the three sisters and at first, I found it difficult to really feel involved with them。 However, as the story progressed and they become more and more involved with the local resistance and the occupying forces, I became engrossed with each of the characters and their role in the story。 Each of the three sisters, Helene, Elise and Florence have distinct characters and have very different feelings about the war and their part in it。 This leads to friction between them but above all, they are family and their love for each other shines through all of their difficulties。 The plot lines weave in and out and each of the sisters is challenged by events and has to face up to unforeseen difficulties。 Wanting to find out how each part turns out makes the book really hard to put down。This is an engrossing book about how the war affected one village and one family in particular。 I look forward to reading the sequel。 Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins for allowing me to read this in return for an honest review。 。。。more

Wow this was so good! This book hooked me right from the beginning and didn’t let go。 It was one of those books that I couldn’t stop thinking about, and wondering what was going to happen next。I loved everything about it, the setting, the characters, the plot。 I’ve been on holiday to the Dordogne a couple of times, so I could imagine the landscape quite easily, especially when I recognised place names in the story。 I really liked the three sisters, motherly Helene, feisty Elise and Florence the Wow this was so good! Highly recommended if you enjoy historical fiction, especially set in Europe during World War Two。Thanks so much to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for my digital copy via the NetGalley App。 。。。more
