Whether you are an atheist, Christian, or an academic - the Bible in all of its glory can offer an impeccable read。 You can even consider it a literary masterpiece。 Religious or not, one must read this at least once in their lives。

It's a Bible。 How can you not like it? I don't have the antipathy to the NKJV that some have。 This particular Bible is also special because it was given to me by former students who wrote messages and reminders to me in the journaling margins。 It's a Bible。 How can you not like it? Extremely poor translation, tons of inconsistencies and plot holes, and absolutely none of the characters are even remotely likeable。 Even the one we're supposed to like the most is a needy, narcissistic mass murderer, and somehow this is presented as a good thing。 These authors (hiding their true identities - perhaps to hide their shame at having been part of this travesty) have no idea what the hell they're doing with this one。 They must be completely incompetent sadists。 I recommend Jesus, In Extremely poor translation, tons of inconsistencies and plot holes, and absolutely none of the characters are even remotely likeable。 Even the one we're supposed to like the most is a needy, narcissistic mass murderer, and somehow this is presented as a good thing。 These authors (hiding their true identities - perhaps to hide their shame at having been part of this travesty) have no idea what the hell they're doing with this one。 They must be completely incompetent sadists。 I recommend Jesus, Interrupted and Misquoting Jesus as far better alternatives, particularly for those who think they really understand this thing。 Hint: They really, really don't。 。。。more

whatever your values and morality are, you can find something in the bible to support it。 it is full of contradictions, vile acts of cruel inhumanity, and improbabilities, but it was written for a people in a time when germs were unknown rather than our current times, so we can't expect it to be wholesome。 I really hope it is some day taken off its pedestal。 whatever your values and morality are, you can find something in the bible to support it。 it is full of contradictions, vile acts of cruel inhumanity, and improbabilities, but it was written for a people in a time when germs were unknown rather than our current times, so we can't expect it to be wholesome。 I really hope it is some day taken off its pedestal。 。。。more

This review is for the physical quality of this particular edition。 It looks great, the pages are nice and thick, and the illustrations are fun。But honestly, for how nice it looks, the quality doesn't quite match it。 The glue in the stem gave out quickly and separated from the cover。 The gold paint on the edges of the pages comes off and goes everywhere。For all the effort put into the cover style and design, I'm really disappointed in the binding。 A beautiful looking edition that's made to be a This review is for the physical quality of this particular edition。 It looks great, the pages are nice and thick, and the illustrations are fun。But honestly, for how nice it looks, the quality doesn't quite match it。 The glue in the stem gave out quickly and separated from the cover。 The gold paint on the edges of the pages comes off and goes everywhere。For all the effort put into the cover style and design, I'm really disappointed in the binding。 A beautiful looking edition that's made to be a shelf ornament, which is too bad。 。。。more

It would be churlish to offer a rating of one star since this is a work of historical fiction that has had a huge influence on Western literature。 One of the the most quotable and quoted books of all time, it deserves its consideration for it stylish prose alone。Sadly, it is evident from its poor structure and wildly inconsistent plot arcs that the various authors needed a stronger guiding influence or at least an editor happier to wield the red pen。 The plot holes are unintentionally hilarious, It would be churlish to offer a rating of one star since this is a work of historical fiction that has had a huge influence on Western literature。 One of the the most quotable and quoted books of all time, it deserves its consideration for it stylish prose alone。Sadly, it is evident from its poor structure and wildly inconsistent plot arcs that the various authors needed a stronger guiding influence or at least an editor happier to wield the red pen。 The plot holes are unintentionally hilarious, and the main character's schizophrenic pronouncements frequently stretch the reader's credulity: with a character as chaotic and self-contradictory as this one, we're left wondering what exactly the authors are trying to represent。 An origin story would have been a useful supplement, and considering how overlong and repetitive the narrative is, would not have made much of a difference to the already-bloated length。The narrative approach is also somewhat confusing。 Frequently, we aren't told who is addressing the reader。 We're clearly led to believe that the main character, a supernatural being of unknown origin named God is meant to be a behind the plot developments and perhaps the overall narrator of at least part of the book, but it's clear in other sections that other characters are retelling their experiences in the plot arc。 This confusion is never cleared up, and readers reaching the end hoping for the loose threads to be somehow tied together into a satisfying conclusion will be disappointed。 The final chapter disintegrates into a strange hallucinogenic apocalypse, leaving many of the main characters' arcs totally unresolved。It is refreshing to see the authors offer such an unflinching take on the main character's early bigotry。 It's seldom that writer is brave enough to embrace such a monstrous character without giving them a plausible redemptive arc, but this feeds once again into the feeling of inconsistency。 The book at points is trying to direct the reader to view this character sympathetically, but without having any of the principle characters address the gaslighting and abuse he has heaped upon them early in the novel。 One is left with a feeling of implausibility, or that something crucial has been missed out。Ultimately, the guesswork and interpolation needed from the reader become too wearying to really warrant this being recommended for anything other than an excellent example of when a clear talent for linguistic flourish is not enough。 This is not a good book。 。。。more
