Summary

Writing under the pseudonym of Johannes de silentio, Kierkegaard uses the form of a dialectical lyric to present his conception of faith。 Abraham is portrayed as a great man, who chose to sacrifice his son, Isaac, in the face of conflicting expectations and in defiance of any conceivable ethical standard。 The infamous and controversial 'teleological suspension of the ethical' challenged the contemporary views of Hegel's universal moral system, and the suffering individual must alone make a choice 'on the strength of the absurd'。 Kierkegaard's writings have inspired both modern Protestant theology and existentialism。

Had he not died young, Kierkegaard could have formed his own branch of philosophy aside from existentialism。 It's sad that many philosophers had to pick up his pieces。 Had he not died young, Kierkegaard could have formed his own branch of philosophy aside from existentialism。 It's sad that many philosophers had to pick up his pieces。 。。。more

While reading Kierkegaard, I was reminded of Louise Gluck's poetry。 Both of them are patrons of absurdity and faith, that which cannot be explained。Maybe one of the more useful tomes on anxiety。 I won't pretend to have understood everything here, but what reached me, I will carry with me for time to come。 While reading Kierkegaard, I was reminded of Louise Gluck's poetry。 Both of them are patrons of absurdity and faith, that which cannot be explained。Maybe one of the more useful tomes on anxiety。 I won't pretend to have understood everything here, but what reached me, I will carry with me for time to come。 。。。more

And imaginative and philosophical meditation on Abraham sacrifice of Isaac and the nature of faith。 He especially focuses on Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son and its relation to morality。Kierkegaard definitely gave me a lot to thinkin about: "infinite resignation" leading to the "virtue of the absurd", both of which are prerequisites to the "paradox of faith" through which all may be gained。 I'll confess, though, I had a lot of trouble understanding the latter part of the book。 And imaginative and philosophical meditation on Abraham sacrifice of Isaac and the nature of faith。 He especially focuses on Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son and its relation to morality。Kierkegaard definitely gave me a lot to thinkin about: "infinite resignation" leading to the "virtue of the absurd", both of which are prerequisites to the "paradox of faith" through which all may be gained。 I'll confess, though, I had a lot of trouble understanding the latter part of the book。 。。。more

It's REAL and it HURTS!You know, I'm the kinda guy who has amassed a vast assortment of glosses, summaries and guides to Kierkegaard。 He's that tough to read。 And this slim book, being short, might otherwise seem easy。 But it's not。For one thing, Kierkegaard - unlike so many wiseacres these days - doesn't skew his segues。 Nor does he, like them, cover his sins in bland sameness。 He always gets us to the same somewhat tediously recirculating point。 BUT the dull camouflage of his circling gets us there in new and startling ways, it we’re at all awake。Wanna wake up?By far the best "guide" to this book is another alluringly slim volume, Jacques Derrida's Literature in Secret。 You should get it, if you want to figure Kierkegaard out! Here's how Derrida makes Kierkegaard clear as MUD:He dwells, not on the conviction of his paradoxes - no。 For by extrapolating on and reworking the subtle areas of Fear and Trembling (at which point readers like me CRY OUT for a simple Crib Sheet) he takes our minds further and further out into the cold Arctic of a terra incognita。 With nary a comfort。NOW we're totally lost。And we’re ITCHING for a distraction。 A beer。 Or TV。 Or at least a smoke!Sound familiar? We’re ALL like that。 Me, too…You see, don't you, that Derrida clarifies Kierkegaard by showing him to us as he must have seemed to the author's Original 19th Century audience: as something so totally FOREIGN to their habitual comfort zones that suddenly they HAD TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES? Just as Socrates did for the Athenians。 So they killed him off。 An enemy of the state, just like Soren Kierkegaard。Therefore, Derrida's is THE Ideal Crib Sheet。 We media-crazed 21st Century couch potatoes are now for the first time, THINKING FOR OURSELVES。The perfect methodology to apply to our nail-biting Finals for our Introduction to Modern Thought 101 class。It is our REAL initiation。And THAT was Kierkegaard's Intent。And, that’s the "meaning" of this complex book, in a Nutshell! 。。。more

The focus on Abraham and Christianity made this a difficult book to read, especially as I am also delving into philosophy for the first time and the translation was a bit archaic。 A student’s notes in a rare 1954 university copy by Walter Lowrie made following along a lot easier, nonetheless。 I really did get a sense of Kierkegaard’s “faith begins where reason stops”, especially compounding the ideas by engaging with some explanations。 I should probably re-read this when I understand Christianit The focus on Abraham and Christianity made this a difficult book to read, especially as I am also delving into philosophy for the first time and the translation was a bit archaic。 A student’s notes in a rare 1954 university copy by Walter Lowrie made following along a lot easier, nonetheless。 I really did get a sense of Kierkegaard’s “faith begins where reason stops”, especially compounding the ideas by engaging with some explanations。 I should probably re-read this when I understand Christianity a bit better。 。。。more

Perhaps this is one of the most difficult book on human psychology and the existentialist movement。 The difficulty is not in explaining what it is, but it is in explaining what it is to other people。Kierkegaard talks about paradox and dualism in which someone can attain throughout what is called the ethical or the universe。 Contextual and metaphorical word was seen to be carefully chosen and it also seems peculiar by the use of Kierkegaard。 Much of Hegelianism is being criticised in this work si Perhaps this is one of the most difficult book on human psychology and the existentialist movement。 The difficulty is not in explaining what it is, but it is in explaining what it is to other people。Kierkegaard talks about paradox and dualism in which someone can attain throughout what is called the ethical or the universe。 Contextual and metaphorical word was seen to be carefully chosen and it also seems peculiar by the use of Kierkegaard。 Much of Hegelianism is being criticised in this work since it does not explain beyond what was written。 The movement of believe is pictured as a journey from one end to another。 This polarity, in the end, was said to have what is called the infinity (beyond)。 The person who understands infinity has the element of absorbing that element in his/her individual life。 The person who grasps the infinite however must know its' transformative value into the concrete。 Without this conretised application, the person is said to be have the infinite resignation (forever resigned)。 Persons who lives inside the universal-ethical, and those who infinitely resigns can both co-exist, however, the third kind of individual will have what is called the paradox - that is when that individual himself lives in the particular but also in the absolute-beyond。 The play of word here is only deemed to maintain pedagogical value。 Kierkegaard meant to explain one thing in different ways。 If this concept is tough, it is probably because Hegelianism is to blame。 As Kierkegaard moves towards the end, much analogical comparison is given (with slight modifications during the discourse) and is somehow self-explanatory。Kierkegaard closes his book by explaining what is meant by movement: that the consummation of a movement is more important than the movement itself。 The former and less important concept however is what universally accepted。 The challenge would be to understand the consummative movement of believe as an absolute direction - beyond the universal, beyond the ethical。 。。。more

After reading this I have decided anyone can write a book on philosophy, one just needs to follow kierkegaard’s example in three easy steps:Step 1; use an arbitrary noun/adjective to stand in place of a complex idea, don’t explain it and refer to it with a definitive article。 The more of these one can fit in a sentence the better。 Step 2: make up ridiculous metaphors to compliment the ideas hidden in the arbitrary noun/adjective; assign inexplicable titles to the people in the metaphors, frequen After reading this I have decided anyone can write a book on philosophy, one just needs to follow kierkegaard’s example in three easy steps:Step 1; use an arbitrary noun/adjective to stand in place of a complex idea, don’t explain it and refer to it with a definitive article。 The more of these one can fit in a sentence the better。 Step 2: make up ridiculous metaphors to compliment the ideas hidden in the arbitrary noun/adjective; assign inexplicable titles to the people in the metaphors, frequently compare these metaphors to step 1 without ever providing context。 Step 3: Finish all paragraphs/sections by subtly implying if the reader doesn’t understand then they probably don’t understand philosophy。 Here’s an example: the prefect does not negate the tertiary in so much as it amplifies the smorgasbord, this is most evident in the strength of the tertiary as seen in the liberator of Sasquatch。 If we truly understand, which I admit I cannot, the liberator of Sasquatch in the strength of the smorgasbord then the prefect is confirmed。 This is of course the ultimate meaning of the absurd as argued by someone you’ve never heard of…philosophy!I had to read the cliff notes to figure out what the hell he was talking about。 Basically it boils down to the idea that you cannot explain faith through reason, faith is a personal belief that has to be experienced…well no shit。 。。。more
