Summary

Ambitious New York City teenager Craig Gilner is determined to succeed at life - which means getting into the right high school to get into the right job。 But once Craig aces his way into Manhattan's Executive Pre-Professional High School, the pressure becomes unbearable。 He stops eating and sleeping until, one night, he nearly kills himself。

Craig's suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio。 There, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety。

Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness。

My fav quote from the book “I’m waiting for her to say “Craig, what you need to do is X” and for the Shift to occur。 I want there to be a Shift so bad。 I want to feel my brain slide back into the slot it was meant to be in, rest there the way it did before the fall of last year …。” I will refrain from rating It’s Kind of a Funny Story out of respect for the late Ned Vizzini。 May he rest in peace 。。 Here are my thoughts: I DNFed the book a little bit after the halfway point (another reason why I’ My fav quote from the book “I’m waiting for her to say “Craig, what you need to do is X” and for the Shift to occur。 I want there to be a Shift so bad。 I want to feel my brain slide back into the slot it was meant to be in, rest there the way it did before the fall of last year …。” I will refrain from rating It’s Kind of a Funny Story out of respect for the late Ned Vizzini。 May he rest in peace 。。 Here are my thoughts: I DNFed the book a little bit after the halfway point (another reason why I’m not rating it)。 This wasn’t what I expected to be honest 。。 I am diagnosed with depression as well, so many of the aspects related to depression and how it works and makes you feel did ring true to me and I appreciated those aspects。 However, I didn’t really vibe with everything else in the book。 The relationships, the characters。 I was skipping things。 I finally decided to DNF it because I really wasn’t enjoying it or, to be honest, learning from it。 It breaks my heart to say, as I rarely read books like this, but I wanted It’s Kind of a Funny Story to be more mature and enlightening。 I wanted to love it, to read more quotes like the one above, to feel every word of it touch my heart, and unfortunately that’s not what I was feeling, so I decided to put it down。 I appreciate the author’s attempt to create something that helps people and I see from the reviews that it did make a lot of people feel good。 It just wasn’t for me 💔 。。。more

I enjoyed the book and I have learned many stuff by reading it。 This book will not explain to you in details how a depressed person feels and that is the big deal about it。 Vizzini narrates the story of a depressed adolescent in a way that it can be understood from everyone, have been or not at this situation。 Also, the everyday story at the hospital make the book smooth and interesting to read。 I could say that it is one of the best young-adult novels I have ever read。

I read this because I needed something to read kind of urgently。 Very much not for me。

read this a little while after or before experiencing something similar (i forget which #mental illness forgetfulness u know the vibe!) to what the main character does and going to get help~ and i love this book so so so much。 it has my heart。 characters are good but i wanted MORE! it is actually amazing a great look into the array of people you meet that are from all walks of life all getting help。 idk。 this review is scrambled。 its so good!

It feels odd to rate and review this in depth, so I won’t。 I liked it way, way more than other books like it, which is something。 I’m glad it was created because we need more books about mental health like this, especially for teens。

This was quirky and heartfelt! I love the normalization of mental illness and the message to be yourself! Not an overall intriguing read, but still heart warming。

I love this book because I relate to it。 I personally feel like I wasted the past 2 yrs of my highschool without being involved in extracurriculars due to anxiety and not knowing my passion。 Covid made everything so much harder。

vizzini didnt seem to be that great of a person but it was a good book

I really appreciate the open talk about depression and knowing that it came from the author’s personal experiences。 But I can’t give it a higher rating when there’s so much transphobia and a line as ridiculous as “Noelle rolls her eyes。 I think her breasts roll in sync with them。”

i really liked this book and how the author portrayed depression through craig’s self aware perspective。 i thought the fact that he didn’t realize how his friends and school needed to be dropped and changed until he had time away from them sent a great message! i enjoyed how there were so many moments throughout the book that were signs of craig improving and finding himself and the value he has because they actually made me happy for him。 he isn’t perfect and has his faults but that’s a given—t i really liked this book and how the author portrayed depression through craig’s self aware perspective。 i thought the fact that he didn’t realize how his friends and school needed to be dropped and changed until he had time away from them sent a great message! i enjoyed how there were so many moments throughout the book that were signs of craig improving and finding himself and the value he has because they actually made me happy for him。 he isn’t perfect and has his faults but that’s a given—through a lot of his actions we see that hes good kid at the end of the day and he has to learn that about himself too。 a lottttt of character growth。 。。。more

Okay… How am I going to put this into words?First of all, it’s a heartbreaking story and so recognizable。 I understood Craig a lot, his feelings and thoughts, I’ve had them too and sometimes I still have them。But there were some trigger warnings for me, especially the throwing up part。 I have emetophobia, so it was really hard to read some parts。Besides that, I think I’ll never forget this book。 It did something to me。 “Everybody has problems。 Some people just hide their crap better than others。 Okay… How am I going to put this into words?First of all, it’s a heartbreaking story and so recognizable。 I understood Craig a lot, his feelings and thoughts, I’ve had them too and sometimes I still have them。But there were some trigger warnings for me, especially the throwing up part。 I have emetophobia, so it was really hard to read some parts。Besides that, I think I’ll never forget this book。 It did something to me。 “Everybody has problems。 Some people just hide their crap better than others。” 。。。more

such a good book! it was interesting the whole time and there was always something happening。 i love coming of age stories and this is a great pick that falls right into that category。 it's covers the seriousness of depression but is the least depressing book i've ever read and has a great ending。 such a good book! it was interesting the whole time and there was always something happening。 i love coming of age stories and this is a great pick that falls right into that category。 it's covers the seriousness of depression but is the least depressing book i've ever read and has a great ending。 。。。more

I liked this book。 It had a great storyline and I liked the realism of it。 I also enjoyed the short chapters and multiple parts。 I love that the author didn’t try to romanticize mental health issues。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 An interesting and hopeful exploration of mental illness and the benefits of getting help。 I loved how by the end of the book, though Craig had improved, he was still on a journey to recovery。 Additionally, the conversations with Bobby being reluctant to give out his phone number adds another realistic aspect to the book。 Sadly, I read another review of this book which said that Ned Vizzini (the author) committed suicide after writing this book。 This really adds another layer of realism to the b An interesting and hopeful exploration of mental illness and the benefits of getting help。 I loved how by the end of the book, though Craig had improved, he was still on a journey to recovery。 Additionally, the conversations with Bobby being reluctant to give out his phone number adds another realistic aspect to the book。 Sadly, I read another review of this book which said that Ned Vizzini (the author) committed suicide after writing this book。 This really adds another layer of realism to the book, and it is so heartbreaking to contrast the hope of Craig at the end of the book of pushing through his depression, with Ned Vizzini's suicide。 The author's understanding of depression is vividly expressed through this book, and all I can hope for is that he now is resting in peace。 。。。more

Abandoned。 It sounded like the main character was an elementary student talking about suicide。 。 Not my thing。

I loved it!! Honestly didnt think it was gonna be THAT good when i first heard about it, but im a big fan of books that are centered around the way someone's brain works。 Felt that i could relate to him, and even though this book is about depression, it's not depressing at all。 I loved it!! This is the only book I read in 2020 because。。。 well ironically, depression。 I think the book is a good depiction of what you can experience inside a mental ward, although I haven't experienced it myself。 I remember liking the characters more than the main character himself。 I think the main character has been a good gateway to tell the stories of the other characters in the facility。 I don't think the "romance" in the book was really evident, for it was not also that important in my opinion。 Th This is the only book I read in 2020 because。。。 well ironically, depression。 I think the book is a good depiction of what you can experience inside a mental ward, although I haven't experienced it myself。 I remember liking the characters more than the main character himself。 I think the main character has been a good gateway to tell the stories of the other characters in the facility。 I don't think the "romance" in the book was really evident, for it was not also that important in my opinion。 This book helped me in some ways in my own struggle with mental health in the previous year。 It delivered a story that can be a reality for me at some point, and the comedic aspects of the novel made it slightly bearable to see in my own life。 I loved this in 2020, but in this year 2021, I have to re-read it again to know if I still love it as much as last year。 Either way, I enjoyed this book! 。。。more

Amazing 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐Where to start this book was a roller coaster。 I was drawn in through all of it and it was kinda like reliving my experience in a psychiatric hospital。 I laughed I almost cried I yelled。 This story is about a 15-year-old boy named Craig who was diagnosed with depression we go along on his adventure through struggling to him admitting he needed help。 We meet many other people with other mental health issues。 I loved that this was a pretty accurate representation。 I understand Amazing 4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐Where to start this book was a roller coaster。 I was drawn in through all of it and it was kinda like reliving my experience in a psychiatric hospital。 I laughed I almost cried I yelled。 This story is about a 15-year-old boy named Craig who was diagnosed with depression we go along on his adventure through struggling to him admitting he needed help。 We meet many other people with other mental health issues。 I loved that this was a pretty accurate representation。 I understand Craig's tentacles I have plenty myself and im still waiting for my shift maybe I just need to find my anchor first。 If your looking for a good mental health book make sure to check this out 。。。more

It wasn’t a funny story。

Very well written in my opinion。 I found the pacing to be a little goofy sometimes, with some parts of the book seeming like they were a lot faster or slower than what felt right for what was happening in the story at the time。 But that's a very small matter and it wasn't a bother for me at all。 The book is my sense of humor, self deprecating and a little dark at times, so it really had me laughing。 Vizzini gets the mental health descriptions and struggle exactly correct; right on par。 When the Very well written in my opinion。 I found the pacing to be a little goofy sometimes, with some parts of the book seeming like they were a lot faster or slower than what felt right for what was happening in the story at the time。 But that's a very small matter and it wasn't a bother for me at all。 The book is my sense of humor, self deprecating and a little dark at times, so it really had me laughing。 Vizzini gets the mental health descriptions and struggle exactly correct; right on par。 When the character is talking about his struggles and what goes on in his mind, you feel as if you are in his brain, feeling it all too。 It's one of the first books I've read about mental health that doesn't feel super clichéd or glorified。 。。。more

there were parts of this that made me think “holy crap i didn’t realize other people felt this way too” and other parts that made me think “it would not have been this easy, seriously”。 it’s a good book about mental health, but it is very much a sort of sneak peek。 it’s ONE event, one that probably would be followed by many other like it if the story weren’t contained to 400 pages。

2。63 i started reading it & i wasnt that into it but i persevered,, unfortunately it did not improve at any drastic rate & most of the “romance” scenes did not have the desired effect ~ rather made me quite uncomfortable
