Summary

A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond。。。

The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war。

Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books。 But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world。 Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been。 And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined。

You can find a more in-depth review on my blog。RATING: 2。5/5This book disappointed me, and I have a lot to say about it。 Let's start by saying that, being the debut novel of this author (who is also self-published), I didn't expect much of it, and I'm still curious to see where the series is going。 The premise sounds intriguing, but to me it is badly executed。 The worldbuilding is chaotic and confusional。 We know that this territory is divided into four, we know that the South is called the Empi You can find a more in-depth review on my blog。RATING: 2。5/5This book disappointed me, and I have a lot to say about it。 Let's start by saying that, being the debut novel of this author (who is also self-published), I didn't expect much of it, and I'm still curious to see where the series is going。 The premise sounds intriguing, but to me it is badly executed。 The worldbuilding is chaotic and confusional。 We know that this territory is divided into four, we know that the South is called the Empire Solaris, but we never get told the names of the other territories。 We also know that each territory favors a specific type of magic, but for some reason people in the South think sorcerers are evil, and it is never explained why。 Our MC is Vhalla, the typical YA girl who thinks of herself as smarter than most just because she reads, but soon we realize that all those books didn't help her to develop critical thinking: in fact, she spends most of her time playing the part of the little sheep who always follows the flock。 She is always whining about her life and wondering what to do with her powers。 She is also the classic YA heroine who thinks she is ugly, nothing special, "less than nothing" as she says herself, yet captures the interest of not one, not two, but three different guys。The main romance of this book had a lot of potentials, which nevertheless went to waste。 It could have been a beautiful enemies-to-lovers, instead it is rushed and underdeveloped。 The greatest flaw of this book, in my opinion, is the writing: it felt cold, and it made me feel detached from the protagonist, never able to empathize with her。 There are also numerous grammatical errors, and the construction of some sentences is just confusing。 Another aspect that I feel I can criticize is the predictability of the plot twists: apart from the final one, all the others I had foreseen with numerous pages of advance because they were too obvious。 I still want to give this series the benefit of the doubt, because I feel like it can improve a lot, and also because I feel like judging a pentalogy only by his first installment would make me stupid。 Hopefully the sequel will satisfy me more。 。。。more

3。75* I really enjoyed this as a starter novel to a series; the premise is really great, and I’m fond of the characters。 I’m really interested to see the plot develop further and th exploration of relationships blossoming。

Beautiful story of a girl who discovers secrets about herself and uses them to grow into a lovely person。 I love the character building in this book。 The writing is easy to read and very engaging。 I was on the edge of my seat the entire book。 Elise Kova is a brilliant writer。

Did not finish this。 The world building made no sense to me the way it was laid out。 I love fantasy and using my imagination but the execution of this was not interesting and didn’t flow well。 Way over hyped in my opinion。

Wow! I had just read Elise Kova's A Deal with the Elf King, so I knew I liked her writing enough to read more, but holy cow she kicked ass with this one! I love the world this is set in as it's so different than other settings and magic systems I read about。 Vhalla is SO precious; I love her quiet steadfastness and her wit。 Aldrik is that dark, tortured prince that I just can't help but love, and I love their relationship。 Although there isn't much in the way of a developed romance in this book, Wow! The ending had me like 😡🤬🤯 I love when a book makes me feel all the emotions, and Kova did such a great job of that。 I could NOT put this book down。 I think it's better than a 4 rating, but not quite a 4。5。 Can I give it a 4。25? I'm giving it a 4。25。 Fantastic read! 。。。more

This was an audible purchase for me, and I loved this world building, I am lukewarm on the narrator, but I will keep listening。This is one of those books/series I believe I’ll end up buying in paper!I am still learning the differences in fantasy, this has magic but no monsters, so in my head that is a “low fantasy”, if I’m wrong, I am sorry。This is a cliffy, but the series is complete, I believe (I HOPE!!)

I LOVED this and it has Avatar the Last Airbender vibes。

This book reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender。 There's a lot of parallels in the story。(view spoiler)[The "airbenders" were burned by the "firebenders" and the last Windwalker existed 150 years ago。 (hide spoiler)] This book reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender。 There's a lot of parallels in the story。(view spoiler)[The "airbenders" were burned by the "firebenders" and the last Windwalker existed 150 years ago。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Was this the most original book ever? No Was it full of tropes? AbsolutelyDid I binge it in 2 days and eat up every word? I am reading the entire box set all at once - Book one has most certainly captured my attention。

1。5 stars rounded down。 The concepts for the world and plot were both good, and I liked Vhalla。 However, the whole effect was spoiled for me by poor writing。 Excessive descriptions and dialogue tags stuck out the most to me。 (The moon never needs to be called a "celestial orb"。) I also don't think I noticed any contractions throughout the book, which made the writing sound stilted and awkward。 I finished the book for the sake of the plot, but I wish the writing had been at the same level。 1。5 stars rounded down。 The concepts for the world and plot were both good, and I liked Vhalla。 However, the whole effect was spoiled for me by poor writing。 Excessive descriptions and dialogue tags stuck out the most to me。 (The moon never needs to be called a "celestial orb"。) I also don't think I noticed any contractions throughout the book, which made the writing sound stilted and awkward。 I finished the book for the sake of the plot, but I wish the writing had been at the same level。 。。。more

I was really enjoying this, but I just did not like the ending at all。 I didn't understand the trial section and the way it ended。 I just dont think it makes sense? Like all that needed to happen was the prince explaining what happened and that should have been enough to completely make the trial unnecessary。 It just didnt go in a direction I'm interested in so I probably wont be continuing the series anytime soon。 ONE LAST THING: the book says multiple times Vhalla's hair is brown so why is she I was really enjoying this, but I just did not like the ending at all。 I didn't understand the trial section and the way it ended。 I just dont think it makes sense?

Missed opportunity, why so much tell vs show? Right when we meet the Prince, and he and Vhalla start to build on their initial antagonistic relationship, the author inexplicably switches to "telling" us about their interactions instead of showing them to us。 They formed an entire "relationship" off page。 Even though I tried to hang in and see where we were going, I'm at 70% and just don't care about any of the characters。 Moving on。。。 Missed opportunity, why so much tell vs show? 3。5/5Would have rated it higher except for the blatant Avatar the Last Airbender similarities and everything with Sareem。 I did thoroughly enjoy Vhalla and Aldrik。 Overall, the book was a very quick and easy read。

3。75 stars This is a nice start to a series! I definitely got some Last Airbender vibes from a few things, but not so much that it felt unoriginal。 I felt it was telling vs showing in a lot of places, writing wise。 I've read a few series starters recently, but this was the first that got me to continue the series。 If you like YA fantasy and possible slow burn romances, check it out! 3。75 stars This is a nice start to a series! I struggled to enjoy the first half of the book because of the pacing, it picked way up in the end though。 The relationship between Vhalla and Aldrik left me wanting more ugh

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Maybe closer to 3。5 because it was fun and I want to continue reading the series。 Another book from my "I bought this at least three years ago and still haven't read it" list that I'm glad I did read because it was actually pretty enjoyable! Brain isn't working so here are dot points:- Pushing your potential love interest off a building is only funny if she doesn't hurt herself and it's done in a snarky way。 Do not push potential love interest off a tall building if you're not 100% sure about her magical powers and that she can in fact save herself。 - Sometimes I felt the characters were inconsistent and flipped between a whole range of emotions and opinions really quickly。 So now I've finished bk 1 and I'm still a little ?? on what the characters are like and how they react to things- I mean, I got it, but I also didn't get why Aldrik was so rude to Vhalla sometimes (see note on some characters feeling inconsistent)- We went from zero to 100 real quick in the last 100 pages and Vhalla ending up on trial and being beaten/abused is not where I thought we'd end up, goodness gracious- As soon as Sareem was introduced, I knew he was going to die, and when he did die, I felt。。nothing? Like it was so insignificant because I feel like we didn't actually get to see him and Vhalla be friends, and then they argued and were really awkward for most of the book bc of V's magic。 (Also I get it was kind of stressful/awkward to have Sareem say he loved her, but girl don't lead him on! You're in love with the grumpy prince - just say no thanks you're only friends!) - I thought the way Sareem and Roan reacted to Vhalla's magic/magic in general was a bit over the top and escalated really quickly。 I also thought Sareem's outburst when Vhalla first showed him magic was too much。 I mean, would he really have run away from her? I think stormed off would've been better- I can usually look past writing style, but at pg 70, unfortunately Kova's was starting to grate on me - which sucked because this book is just over 300 pgs。 All her sentences surrounding dialogue were structured the same ("dialogue blah blah" she said softly and turned away), and there were so many adverbs as descriptors and it all got so repetitive and I was so annoyed because just one more edit to cut those down would've been so beneficial! Also all her verbs and descriptors were so dramatic lol - it's ok to not have a powerful thing every sentence, characters can be chill! - But also, I'm really excited to see where the series heads and cannot wait for the romance btwn Vhalla and Aldrik bc the "our magic is complimentary complimentary" is one of m favourite tropes and also their intercations (when they weren't being weird) were so cute and good- Also a map maybe? Idk if the later books have one but I would like a map, please 。。。more

3。25I definitely didn’t hate this。 It was a bit convenient at times and I’m definitely not okay with how many times she was told she is prettier when she smiles, but I mean…。it was worth the read and I will be continuing on with the series (because I got the whole series on Audible for one credit) so I’m hoping things only go up from here。
