Spell of Desire, Vol。 5 by Tomu Ohmi ⭐⭐⭐⭐What an ending! These last two volumes were the most exciting of the series, and the most romantic, too。 The infamous Witch Queen, Kaoruko’s mother, finally made her return and as expected she was a total badass! I mean, damn, that curse she put on Kaname? As devastating as it was to read and see played out, I couldn’t help but respect her power and cunning - sometimes there are fates far worse than death。 Well-played, round of applause! However, I was happy to see that things ended well (I mean, this is a romance story, first and foremost), but the journey to get there was a nail-biter。 I really enjoy how much love has “softened” our once mysterious hero。 And Kaoruko finally grew into her own powers and became an even more powerful witch than her mother。 And that brings me to the only thing that really confuses me - the Witch Queen。 We’re finally told why she went into isolation。 Then she comes back for a few days, causing havoc for our couple, only to (view spoiler)[go right back into isolation once she is satisfied that her Kaoruko was a suitable replacement for her (hide spoiler)]? I feel like that plot thread was a little too loosey-goosey。 I’m still not a fan of how loyal Kaname was to her。 I’m pretty well convinced that there was never anything romantic or sexual between them, but it’s more like she became the bright spot in his life。 You have to remember, she took him in as an orphan child who’d wandered around the woods up to that point and gave him a purpose in life。 To him, she is a god, and having spent so many years under her rule (her enchantment?), it was difficult for him to break away。 But I’m happy to report, (view spoiler)[break away, he did。 He chose Kaoruko with no hesitation and even after the Witch Queen cursed him, he didn’t regret his decision。 Yeah, he was torn up that he’d lose everything he loved about Kaoruko, down to his very memories of her, but I loved that he had faith in his woman to fix things。 Still, even after parting ways with the queen, when she reinstated him and ordered him to protect Kaoruko indefinitely, he seemed more than okay with it。 Was it because his status as the queen’s head knight was reinstated? Or that he was permanently assigned to Kaoruko。。。the new Witch Queen? I don’t know, maybe a little of both (hide spoiler)]。 I appreciate that the author acknowledged in the end notes that they were unable to flesh out certain characters the way they wanted to, including drawings of them to denote the specific ones。 Sometimes dropping characters or fading them into the background is awkward (and noticeable), but so is trying to jam them into a scene they make no sense to be in。 The only thing I would have liked more out of the ending is (view spoiler)[a wedding, or a mention of them being married, or engaged, or something! I mean, they were pretending to be engaged in the beginning。。。did it turn into a real one? Sadly, she’s not wearing the ring he gave her during the fake engagement on the final pages, so probably not (hide spoiler)]。 All in all, despite the weird resolution of the Witch Queen conflict, I enjoyed the wrap-up of the romance because in the end, that’s the main thing I was invested in。 Because of Kaoruko’s new status in the coven and Kaname’s permanent assignment to her, I’m sure they’ll have many adventures to come。。。off page, sadly。 Sigh。。。I always hate when I finish a series。 LOL Spell of Desire is a solid four-star series that I recommend if you’re in the mood for a more serious read with romance and magical elements。 。。。more

This really ended strong and I enjoyed it more as I got into this series。 I loved the world development and the relationship development。 It was a really interesting and I ended up appreciating it more toward the end。 I still don't like how the main character's sexuality was used as a tool to gain power, so this series isn't without it problematic content。 But this ended stronger than it started。 This really ended strong and I enjoyed it more as I got into this series。 I loved the world development and the relationship development。 It was a really interesting and I ended up appreciating it more toward the end。 I still don't like how the main character's sexuality was used as a tool to gain power, so this series isn't without it problematic content。 But this ended stronger than it started。 。。。more

It's interestingThis is an adult series。 Twists, turns, and a bit of heartache。 MC grows quite a bit and adapts to the conflicts around her expertly。 She reminds me of a grey Jedi。 Embracing both sides in her own way。 It's interestingThis is an adult series。 Twists, turns, and a bit of heartache。 MC grows quite a bit and adapts to the conflicts around her expertly。 She reminds me of a grey Jedi。 Embracing both sides in her own way。 。。。more

Bad moms, gambles of life and death, and questionable life choices therein: that’s about what to surmise for this manga。 Still, it was an interesting series, and the art is so very lovely。 I just wish the story had had a bit longer to expand and flesh out its world-building。

Alright I am through with this series。 It had quite a few flaws and a rather bland, meek doormat heroine, that didn‘t fit a black witch at all。 But I really love the beautiful drawing style and was overall entertained by this cheesy love story。 It fulfilled exactly what I expected and wanted。 Plus: fluffy animals!! Yay!

I really enjoyed this series! This volume reminded me that the entire cast is essentially made up of powerful women。 I thought the Witch Queen (Koko's mother) was fairly creepy, especially in how she is both loving and cruel to her daughter。 Her punishment for Kaname was also extremely cruel。 As punishment for falling in love with Koko and thus betraying the Witch Queen, he slowly loses his senses throughout the manga, and then he loses his memories of Koko。 I also like that in the end, Koko is I really enjoyed this series! This is a sexy, fun series。 The writing is not great, its a bit over-flowery for my tastes, though if you like that, pick this up, you'll love it。 On the other side, there is the art。 Which is amazing。 This is the sort of manga art I love to see。 It's so well drawn, with so few lines。。。 The artists skill is clear and present。 Worth reading, even if you do roll your eyes at the love story。 This is a sexy, fun series。 The writing is not great, its a bit over-flowery for my tastes, though if you like that, pick this up, you'll love it。 On the other side, there is the art。 Which is amazing。 This is the sort of manga art I love to see。 It's so well drawn, with so few lines。。。 The artists skill is clear and present。 Worth reading, even if you do roll your eyes at the love story。 。。。more

Sad to see that this great series ending, but it ended really great。 Even though there are a lot of questions surrounding this ending, I think the author did it for our imagination。Either way。 Great series!

I'm entirely in love with this series, though I'm sad that it's over。 I own all five of these books, loving the characters more and more after each page that I read。 I love Tomu's other works, but this is by far my favorite one。 The story is excellent, and the art even more so。 I'm entirely in love with this series, though I'm sad that it's over。 I own all five of these books, loving the characters more and more after each page that I read。 I love Tomu's other works, but this is by far my favorite one。 The story is excellent, and the art even more so。 。。。more

~3。5/5We finally get to meet the witch queen。 And she’s kind of terrible。 She had her reasons, which we’re shown later, but I’m still not a big fan。 By meeting her, though, and with what we know and learn about Kaoruko’s grandmother, we get a better view of who Kaoruko is and how she came to be this way。There’s a big final trial in this volume to see how strong Kaoruko really is, and how strong her and Kaname’s love really is。 I like how Kaoruko stood up for what she wanted and fought back, and ~3。5/5We finally get to meet the witch queen。 And she’s kind of terrible。 She had her reasons, which we’re shown later, but I’m still not a big fan。 By meeting her, though, and with what we know and learn about Kaoruko’s grandmother, we get a better view of who Kaoruko is and how she came to be this way。There’s a big final trial in this volume to see how strong Kaoruko really is, and how strong her and Kaname’s love really is。 I like how Kaoruko stood up for what she wanted and fought back, and how she did what she had to do in order to get what was important to her。While I am not in love with Kaoruko and Kaname as a couple, their chemistry just hasn’t really hit me, but I do believe in them, and that they believe in them。 I liked how they came out of what happened to them, how they fought and loved each other through it。The ending was nice。 It felt fitting and deserving after everything, and I think it worked well for Kaoruko and Kaname。 It wasn’t my favorite series, but I enjoyed it。A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, and Erik Jansen from MediaLab PR。 Thank you so, so much![Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!] 。。。more
