Summary

A little magic can take you a long way。

After James Henry Trotter's parents are tragically eaten by a rhinoceros, he goes to live with his two horrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge。 Life there is no fun, until James accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old peach tree and strange things start to happen。 The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house。 Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends—Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more。 With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and the great adventure begins!

What else did I expect from Roald Dahl? His stories are so imaginative!!

I read this for the first time in third grade, and we did a class play of it。 I read it out loud to my seven-year-old son, too。 The short chapters are perfect for reading one before bed every night。 The book is easy to read aloud, although there are some difficult words that my son didn't know。 The story is engaging and easy to follow。 It's a really good book to read aloud。 I read this for the first time in third grade, and we did a class play of it。 I read it out loud to my seven-year-old son, too。 The short chapters are perfect for reading one before bed every night。 The book is easy to read aloud, although there are some difficult words that my son didn't know。 The story is engaging and easy to follow。 It's a really good book to read aloud。 。。。more

Although I am well versed in Books by Roald Dahl I had never read this one。 We listened to it on the way back from Hot Springs as a family。 About 7 chapters in, Reid was like “this is weird”! But he was gripped the whole time and I think he was the perfect age。 It is very BFG or fortunately the milk (non roald Dahl but similar randomness)。 It was 100% worth it to see His eyes LIgHT Up when he realized where the peach was going to land after our trip to NYC this summer。 I personally like Charlie Although I am well versed in Books by Roald Dahl I had never read this one。 We listened to it on the way back from Hot Springs as a family。 About 7 chapters in, Reid was like “this is weird”! Oh what a childhood classic this book is! I will be honest and say I'm more familiar with the movie, and they are quite different from each other, but I still enjoyed the book! It was fun to watch the journey unfold, get the personalities of each of the characters, and have it all wrapped up nicely。 This is a great book for children, it has a imaginative story with fun ideas and there's constantly something happening to keep their attention。 Oh what a childhood classic this book is! You haven’t lived till you’ve listened to an almost-eight-year -old shriek with giddy laughter at the antics of a giant centipede, at the jibes of a resentful earthworm, and at the satisfaction of the *crunch* when Aunts Spiker and Sponge meet their timely end

Not his best work! Not that creative, annoying characters!

this was was better than the movie (which creeped me out endlessly as a youth)i could tell it was a solid roald dahl book by the use of language and sense of humor。 the audio version i listened to was really really really awful bc of all the peach eating noises。

Re-reading childhood favorites is always a precarious undertaking。 What if it doesn’t hold up? What if it tarnishes all the wonderful memories? I found them just as magical as an adult。 And, if anyone is aware of where I can locate a Giant Peach, I would love to crawl inside and live with over-sized insects and travel to wonderful places like the land of cloud-people。 Anyone? Come on … SOMEONE must know where to find a giant peach??!! 。。。more

Enpäs ole aiemmin (ainakaan muistaakseni) lukenut mitään Roald Dahlin kirjoja。 Pari leffaa nyt nähtyäni aattelin tutustua alkuperäisiin teksteihin, vaikka tästä en toistaiseksi ookaan mitään leffaversioita nähnyt。 Tarina oli ihan hassu ja ehkä opettavainenkin lapsille, mut näin aikuisena en nyt erityisesti viihdyttynyt tän parissa。

Dahl's other childrens books all seem to be about as long as they need to be, which is something I like about them。 But this book is too long for the story it tells, and it's a short book。 There are some neat ideas & images but it's mostly picaresque fluff and I guess that's fine but I can't see many modern kids willingly sitting through this when the emotional stakes are pretty low & it's basically an extended riff on the same theme。 Not a bad book by any means but far from the author's most co Dahl's other childrens books all seem to be about as long as they need to be, which is something I like about them。 But this book is too long for the story it tells, and it's a short book。 There are some neat ideas & images but it's mostly picaresque fluff and I guess that's fine but I can't see many modern kids willingly sitting through this when the emotional stakes are pretty low & it's basically an extended riff on the same theme。 Not a bad book by any means but far from the author's most compelling。 。。。more

This is a somewhat simple story about a neglected boy (James) who discovers a giant peach and several insects which have grown to enormous proportions living inside。 He goes with them on a fantastic adventure which gives you a lot to think about in regards to 'found' families in a fairy tale sense。I first heard this story when I was in second grade and our teacher read this out loud to the class。 Oddly enough, while I found the story entertaining enough, I never liked it much。 The idea of living This is a somewhat simple story about a neglected boy (James) who discovers a giant peach and several insects which have grown to enormous proportions living inside。 He goes with them on a fantastic adventure which gives you a lot to think about in regards to 'found' families in a fairy tale sense。I first heard this story when I was in second grade and our teacher read this out loud to the class。 Oddly enough, while I found the story entertaining enough, I never liked it much。 The idea of living inside a peach seemed just。。。sticky。 And unpleasant, especially when surrounded by a bunch of bugs。 Now I liked bugs well enough, but being surrounded by giant ones was not particularly appealing。I picked this book up again recently as an adult to see if perhaps it was better than I remembered。 Sadly, much as other people liked this book, I found myself disliking it more and more with each page turned。 I didn't like James。 I didn't like the attitudes of the bugs or anyone else。 To celebrate squashing someone wasn't really funny, even if they were wicked。 And did anyone other than me feel sorry for all those poor seagulls flying desperately through the sky trying to keep the peach aloft? So, while this book is imaginative and very creative, I still don't like it even after all these years。 It was fun revisiting it though, for it brought up nice memories of sitting on the carpet at storytime and listening to the teacher read to us (I wish I could remember her name now。。。that's going to drive me crazy)。 I also remembered other books she read out loud which I liked much better。 。。。more

Reason being, if we are excited about the stories we read our children, they will pick up on our excitement and will themselves be primed to be excited about reading。 (Our reluctance toward reading, on the other hand, would also be detected and could have a deleterious effect。)。 I am happy to say that I loved revisiting this classic book from my childhood, although it was a lot wonkier than I remembered (but what did I expect about a book about a giant peach!)The characters in the peach that James got to know throughout his adventure made the book what it was。 The adventures were fun, too, of course, like the peach rolling into the water off the Cliffs of Dover, and the seagulls lifting the peach into the night sky, all the way across the ocean to New York, etc。 Those were fun, but the best part was the centipede trying to get his shoes on, and the earthworm, and the reluctant glow bug, and the nervous spider。 。。。more

Master storyteller, Roald Dahl, does it again with "James and the Giant Peach," an amazing story of young James Trotter who is given a bag of magical crystals, which he drops, and one of the crystals results in the growth of very large peach on the grounds of his cruel aunts, Spiker and Sponge。 While cleaning the aunts' newest money making fruit "attraction," James discovers a tunnel inside the peach and meets a bevvy of human-sized insects (a ladybug, a spider, a glow worm, a silk worm, an eart Master storyteller, Roald Dahl, does it again with "James and the Giant Peach," an amazing story of young James Trotter who is given a bag of magical crystals, which he drops, and one of the crystals results in the growth of very large peach on the grounds of his cruel aunts, Spiker and Sponge。 While cleaning the aunts' newest money making fruit "attraction," James discovers a tunnel inside the peach and meets a bevvy of human-sized insects (a ladybug, a spider, a glow worm, a silk worm, an earthworm, a centipede and a grasshopper) who become his friends and protectors。 Together, they embark on an exciting trip that takes them across the ocean to America。 This story is a classic and one that you can enjoy no matter what age you are when you read or reread again。 。。。more
