Summary

What happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince of all time and he turns out to be。。。well。。。a lot less than the man of her dreams?

As a boy, William Goldman claims, he loved to hear his father read the S。 Morgenstern classic, The Princess Bride。 But as a grown-up he discovered that the boring parts were left out of good old Dad's recitation, and only the "good parts" reached his ears。

Now Goldman does Dad one better。 He's reconstructed the "Good Parts Version" to delight wise kids and wide-eyed grownups everywhere。

What's it about? Fencing。 Fighting。 True Love。 Strong Hate。 Harsh Revenge。 A Few Giants。 Lots of Bad Men。 Lots of Good Men。 Five or Six Beautiful Women。 Beasties Monstrous and Gentle。 Some Swell Escapes and Captures。 Death, Lies, Truth, Miracles, and a Little Sex。

In short, it's about everything。

This edition include fifty full-page color illustrations by Michael Manomivibul (taken from the 2013 edition and enlarged), full-color chapter openers, and a beautiful color rendition of the map printed on the endpapers。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 My opinion of this book has undergone numerous transformations。 At first, I was entranced by the plot, but felt that the author of the abridgment, William Goldman, interjected too often, which detracted from the magic and charm of the story。 He interrupted the really heart-wrenching moments, causing me to lose interest even when death fell upon a beloved character。 After finishing the novel, I learned that the “original” author of the book, Morgenstern, was as fictional as the rest of the novel。 My opinion of this book has undergone numerous transformations。 At first, I was entranced by the plot, but felt that the author of the abridgment, William Goldman, interjected too often, which detracted from the magic and charm of the story。 He interrupted the really heart-wrenching moments, causing me to lose interest even when death fell upon a beloved character。 After finishing the novel, I learned that the “original” author of the book, Morgenstern, was as fictional as the rest of the novel。 Goldman had abridged the “good parts” of his own nonexistent copy of “The Princess Bride”。 Naturally, I felt confused, betrayed even, and thought less of the book because of it。 Then, I realized the brilliance Goldman’s devices。 Yes, I still believe those devices detracted from the novel in some ways, however, there is an extra element of artistry and genius when one considers the depth that Goldman created in maintaining his facade。 He even utilized two distinct writing styles between each author。 There are so many layers within “The Princess Bride” that I cannot accurately depict my opinion with a mere star rating。 All I know to be true is that Goldman crafted a near masterpiece。 。。。more

The story itself is good, but the author 'self' inserts were distracting and annoying, they could have been left out and I would have enjoyed it a hell of a lot more。 The story itself is good, but the author 'self' inserts were distracting and annoying, they could have been left out and I would have enjoyed it a hell of a lot more。 。。。more

Spero che almeno gli aneddoti sul film (che non ho ancora visto) siano veri。。。 (hide spoiler)]Mi è piaciuto davvero tanto。 Lascerò passare un po' di tempo e poi lo rileggerò。 。。。more

I loved it!!! 10/10 would absolutely recommend, it fills in a lot of gaps from the movie and is just so funny and so full of heart (the torture scenes were as hard for me to read as they were for me to watch)

So I guess this is an unpopular opinion but this book didn’t live up to the hype。 “The Princess Bride” is one of my favorite movies of all time and when I found out it was based on a book, I was ecstatic。 But the book did not meet my expectations。The writing style wasn’t as elegant as what I thought it would be, especially given the dialogue in the movie。 I also didn’t love Buttercup’s book characterization (except how she handled the guards at the very end)。 I did really enjoy hearing more abou So I guess this is an unpopular opinion but this book didn’t live up to the hype。 “The Princess Bride” is one of my favorite movies of all time and when I found out it was based on a book, I was ecstatic。 But the book did not meet my expectations。The writing style wasn’t as elegant as what I thought it would be, especially given the dialogue in the movie。 I also didn’t love Buttercup’s book characterization (except how she handled the guards at the very end)。 I did really enjoy hearing more about Iniago’s backstory and about the Zoo of Death。The story is still great, but it just didn’t live up to what I had hoped it would be。 。。。more

Very silly and very much like the movie, surprisingly so。 Quite creative but so very dramatic in humor that I find it less worthwhile than I would if the characters felt less。。。 like caricatures。 Still enjoyed it somewhat。

I know this is a classic but I personally did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would and I’m bummed。

I had not seen the film before reading the book, and at first i found the plot confusing and thought I may not finish the book。 However the book took a complete turn for me around 1/3 of the way through and I really got into the humerus plot and the loveable characters and their back stories。 This book certainly redeemed itself and I would recommend it!

I think this was one of the times that I think the movie is better than the book。 A little more context about some scenes was nice and the zoo of death was okay, but I didn’t care for the author interjections and the movie is just so much more romantic and classic that I was dying for Billy Crystal to start talking or even just have Cary Elwes narrating。 Buttercup was so much more unlikeable and Westley’s “as you wish” just didn’t carry the same message。

Rory Bracken

Great fun with some excellent characters。 Would rather have had shorter interludes from the author but a minor gripe。 Perfect bit of derring-do escapism for those inclined。

4。5This book was a fever dream。 It brilliant but not at the same time。 And the ending is just down right evil。 Lile how could you do that。 Over all it was an experience to read, but more of a weird one than a good oneI always found it odd that william goldman was said to be the author although he was only an abridger。 Turns out s。 Morgenstern doesnt exist。 He ghost wrote a story which he himself abridged。 It was clever and enabled him to comment on his work throughout his book and add more depth 4。5This book was a fever dream。 It brilliant but not at the same time。 And the ending is just down right evil。 Lile how could you do that。 Over all it was an experience to read, but more of a weird one than a good oneI always found it odd that william goldman was said to be the author although he was only an abridger。 Turns out s。 Morgenstern doesnt exist。 He ghost wrote a story which he himself abridged。 It was clever and enabled him to comment on his work throughout his book and add more depth aswell as acknowledge that there are many confusing parts。 。。。more

Skip the prologue, it’s has a much less wholesome feel than the rest of the book。 Once you get into the story, it’s amazing! Different from the movie, obviously, more depth to the characters。 A rare example of a book and a movie being equally wonderful, despite being very different from each other。

“My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” Well, this was a lot of fun!I didn't grow up with either the book or the movie (understandable, since both were released many years before I was born), and so I only knew of it's fame and status as a cult classic。 To my surprise, the movie held up incredibly well: I immediately fell in love with Inigo (my beloved ❤️) and had loads of fun with the witty quips and all the adventure。Fortunately, this is one of the rare situations “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” Well, this was a lot of fun!I didn't grow up with either the book or the movie (understandable, since both were released many years before I was born), and so I only knew of it's fame and status as a cult classic。 To my surprise, the movie held up incredibly well: I immediately fell in love with Inigo (my beloved ❤️) and had loads of fun with the witty quips and all the adventure。Fortunately, this is one of the rare situations in which the movie is just as good as the book。 They are pretty close, with very few things added or changed。 This book somehow strickes a balance between funny and serious, making me care about the characters and their adventures even as I laugh and the narrator makes fun of them。 Inigo, as I mentioned, instantly had my heart, although I really love Fezzik as well, and their friendship was the most precious thing。 Westley and Buttercup were also adorable。 All the characters have a lot of heart, and so it was very easy to care about them。I do admit Westley is a tad too idealized (how did he become the Best at everything in such a short time?), and their romance felt a little underdeveloped, but I'm willing to mostly suspend my belief about those things, since they add to the "classic love story" feel。 And, even though the joke of William Goldman writing an edited version of a fictional book about a fictional country was funny, there's such a thing as extending a joke too much, to the point it loses flavor, and that for me happened in the more than one hundred pages of it after the end。 That was kind of a bore and I had to push myself to read through。But, yes。 Minus the (hah) boring bits, I liked this a lot。 。。。more
