Summary

The internationally bestselling novel about a little café in Kabul, and the five extraordinary women who meet there - as if Maeve Binchy had written The Kite Runner。 If you've read and loved this novel, look out for its brilliant sequel, Return to the Little Coffee Shop of Kabul

In a little coffee shop in one of the most dangerous places on earth, five very different women come together。

SUNNY, the proud proprietor, who needs an ingenious plan - and fast - to keep her café and customers safe。

YAZMINA, a young pregnant woman stolen from her remote village and now abandoned on Kabul's violent streets。

CANDACE, a wealthy American who has finally left her husband for her Afghan lover, the enigmatic Wakil。

ISABEL, a determined journalist with a secret that might keep her from the biggest story of her life。

And HALAJAN, the sixty-year-old den mother, whose long-hidden love affair breaks all the rules。

As these five women discover there's more to one another than meets the eye, they form a unique bond that will for ever change their lives and the lives of many others。

The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul is the heart-warming and life-affirming fiction debut from the author of the bestselling memoir The Kabul Beauty School

Enjoyed this book。 A nice easy read 😊

There is so much moral standing to take away from this book as well as insight into life for Afghanistan women。 You can feel the authenticity gleaned from real life people in the characters in the author’s story as well as the hope, fears and adversities that are a living reality of what this country has gone through and still faces today。 A brave and beautifully written story, sharing a very real crisis of the worst kind, any country and community could face。

I read this with an open heart and mind。 I can finish reading in one sitting。

3。5 ⭐️ A bit too fluffy given some of the topics explored but a decent, quick escapist read。 I’d have loved it to be more about the Afghan women than the white saviourism of westerners!

Halfway through I realised I was hate-reading。 Nothing is realistic, miss self-insert-with-weird-name has a love triangle (IN A WAR ZONE????) and very emotional boobs, heaps of waxing lyrical about how awful Afghani women have it, the main conflict is wanting a wall around the coffee shop (??), zero emotional impact whatsoever。 Not one likeable character。 How sexy and exotic and liberated the Western women are is reiterated at every possible moment, and all the focus is on them, rather than the Halfway through I realised I was hate-reading。 Nothing is realistic, miss self-insert-with-weird-name has a love triangle (IN A WAR ZONE????) and very emotional boobs, heaps of waxing lyrical about how awful Afghani women have it, the main conflict is wanting a wall around the coffee shop (??), zero emotional impact whatsoever。 Not one likeable character。 How sexy and exotic and liberated the Western women are is reiterated at every possible moment, and all the focus is on them, rather than the 'characters' that actually have traits outside of 'white woman too hot for conservative society :(', who get quickly infantilised and then ignored。 Reeks of white saviorism。 They all become ride-or-die best friends in like two pages with zero explanation。 Writing is at a Grade 9 level。 Like expecting buttercream and getting styrofoam。 Worse than My Immortal because it's unironic 。。。more

An interesting quick read。 It is a westernised chick lit, so if you're looking for a nitty gritty insight into life in Kabul and the effects of the post 9/11 attitudes of those living in a country on the verge of another change in regime, you're not going to get it here。 There's some argument that the characters are cliché but lets be honest - this isn't meant to be great literature, it's meant to be an easy read and that's what it is An interesting quick read。 It is a westernised chick lit, so if you're looking for a nitty gritty insight into life in Kabul and the effects of the post 9/11 attitudes of those living in a country on the verge of another change in regime, you're not going to get it here。 There's some argument that the characters are cliché but lets be honest - this isn't meant to be great literature, it's meant to be an easy read and that's what it is 。。。more

Moderate Spoiler Alert!I was drawn into this book by the main characters facing immediate challenges and conflict around their very survival and wellbeing, plus the fact that all this was happening in a culture and setting that was new and interesting for me。 For me as a male reader, the tensions of life in Afghanistan made it a decent page-turner till about the two-thirds mark。。。but then I noticed more and more of the girly, romantic storylines had crept up and gained prominence。 I had to roll Moderate Spoiler Alert!I was drawn into this book by the main characters facing immediate challenges and conflict around their very survival and wellbeing, plus the fact that all this was happening in a culture and setting that was new and interesting for me。 For me as a male reader, the tensions of life in Afghanistan made it a decent page-turner till about the two-thirds mark。。。but then I noticed more and more of the girly, romantic storylines had crept up and gained prominence。 I had to roll my eyes in the final quarter of the book as there was a complete inevitability about the Happily Ever After for most concerned, with love conquering all despite rigid cultural opposition as multiple Romeos and Juliets get together in the face of their families and/or their own reservations。 The ending did feel a little rushed in terms of tying up all the loose ends, as if by that stage wedding descriptions were massively more important than saving innocent women from jail -- storylines such as the latter being more what kept me going all along than any will they/won't they stuff。。。But since I'm pretty sure I'm not the target market for this book, I have to say kudos to the author for getting me invested long enough that I had to finish it! 。。。more

I loved this book, it takes you to another world。 It is both new and familiar and the story takes you in directions you don’t see coming。 It is totally immersive and great if you want something to get out of your own head。

Mandy

Like reading Mills and Boon。 Got halfway & thought, life is too short to read such crap。

beautifully threaded narratives of 5 women--took me a bit to get into the pace, but worth it!

I was enchanted by this book。 If you want to learn more about the life, people and culture of Afghanistan - this is a book for you。 It put my “little” first world problems into perspective。

Nicole

Wow what an incredible book!!! So shocking that so many women are so oppressed, not fair。 Loved every moment of this wonderfully atmospheric novel!!!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another reading slump。 I had hoped that a book with such a promising premise could help me。 Did it get me out of my slump? Yes。 Did it live up to it’s potential? Not quite。 But what kept me going was how the author created a beautiful world。 I’ve never read a story that was set in Kabul。 But I relate to owning a coffee house! So this book piqued my interest enough。 I think the problem is… I don’t know how to place it。 It’s not a chick lit entirely。 There are parts that are so dark and heavy。 The Another reading slump。 I had hoped that a book with such a promising premise could help me。 Did it get me out of my slump? Despite being super excited to read this book, I ended up being a little underwhelmed。 The story seemed to drag on especially in the middle and I felt that some of the characters weren't well-developed/had enough description/story to justify being there to start with。 Also felt that there was a lot of stereotypes。However, it was a still a nice read and would recommend it if you've got a long flight or some extra time on your hands。 Despite being super excited to read this book, I ended up being a little underwhelmed。 The story seemed to drag on especially in the middle and I felt that some of the characters weren't well-developed/had enough description/story to justify being there to start with。 Also felt that there was a lot of stereotypes。However, it was a still a nice read and would recommend it if you've got a long flight or some extra time on your hands。 。。。more

Beautifully written, enjoyed it highly, been transported to Kabul

A lot of first world savior complex coupled with religious misrepresentations。 I liked only 2 out of the five main character, and found the character development poor。

Lorraine

It was okay。 The writing was not compelling enough, and I really did not get attached to any of the characters。 Really did not care about any of them to be concerned about what happened to them。 It really verged on a shallow romance novel。 So much could have been done with the book, but most of the characters are vapid。 Not a book I would recommend。
