Summary

'All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil'

Published as a shilling shocker, Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy gave birth to the idea of the split personality。 The story of respectable Dr Jekyll's strange association with damnable young man Edward Hyde; the hunt through fog-bound London for a killer; and the final revelation of Hyde's true identity is a chilling exploration of humanity's basest capacity for evil。

This wasn't as interesting to me as I had hoped。 It's also quite short, less than 100 pages。 Worth checking out if you've never read the original。 This wasn't as interesting to me as I had hoped。 It's also quite short, less than 100 pages。 Worth checking out if you've never read the original。 。。。more

I love the duality about these characters。

Stevenson is intelligent in his portrayal of urban life and the new fears that arose alongside its development。 Jekyll investigates the difference between good and evil as they exist within one body, as the text employs classic gothic tropes within a small space。 I do have two tiny issues though。 The first is directed at the text itself, as I found Stevenson often overcomplicates his language with no clear benefit。 Also, I think the popularity of this narrative does somewhat affect our reading o Stevenson is intelligent in his portrayal of urban life and the new fears that arose alongside its development。 Jekyll investigates the difference between good and evil as they exist within one body, as the text employs classic gothic tropes within a small space。 I do have two tiny issues though。 The first is directed at the text itself, as I found Stevenson often overcomplicates his language with no clear benefit。 Also, I think the popularity of this narrative does somewhat affect our reading of it, as a modern reader can hardly be surprised by its twists。 。。。more

Not necessarily my favourite classic, but I can understand why it is one。 Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is told by the perspective of Utterson, a lawyer, who is trying to solve the case of a murder done by Mr Hyde。 This was an interesting concept, and well executed, even though it didn't go the way I expected。 I liked that t was from an outside perspective, especially when Jekyll's feelings about Hyde come to light。 I wouldn't mind reading it again。 Not necessarily my favourite classic, but I can understand why it is one。 Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is told by the perspective of Utterson, a lawyer, who is trying to solve the case of a murder done by Mr Hyde。 This was an interesting concept, and well executed, even though it didn't go the way I expected。 I liked that t was from an outside perspective, especially when Jekyll's feelings about Hyde come to light。 I wouldn't mind reading it again。 。。。more

Loved the Gothic vibes of this novel! It was also awesome to see the separation of ‘the good’ and ‘the evil’ within a person。

This was a reread。 I always loved the work of Robert Louis Stevenson ever since I first read The Bottle Imp。 Even though he is not one of my favorite writers I’m always intrigued by his premises and this one is no exception。 I also enjoy his Victorian era writing style which I don’t know how it holds up in the modern day as it requires a certain mood and patience。

this one was difficult for me, it was nice and lyrical, but the language was less accessible than Carmilla and Otranto for example。 also i think this one started the stigmatization and misunderstanding surrounded people with DID。i mean it was bound to be problematic, but still。。。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It's quite a quick read, and despite being some 200 years old it is still easy to read。While not scary per-se, the true horror lies between the lines, as we imagine what is going through Henry Jekyll's mind towards the end, and as we follow his friend Utterson's narrative of the months leading towards Dr Jekyll's death。I do recommend it to anyone who likes implied psychological terror and some mild mystery。 The story has left its mark on our zeitgeist and many a new story, and for that alone it It's quite a quick read, and despite being some 200 years old it is still easy to read。While not scary per-se, the true horror lies between the lines, as we imagine what is going through Henry Jekyll's mind towards the end, and as we follow his friend Utterson's narrative of the months leading towards Dr Jekyll's death。I do recommend it to anyone who likes implied psychological terror and some mild mystery。 The story has left its mark on our zeitgeist and many a new story, and for that alone it is worth checking out! 。。。more

Pretty good! I listened to a kind of audio drama version of this and felt truly engaged, I can see why this story has stood the test of time as it has! I let it sit in my mind for a bit after finishing it, contemplating the message and even found a discussion about whether it was Jekyll or Hyde who was really the protagonist。 Definitely recommend for anyone looking to discover the classic works many of the pop culture tropes are built upon!

I had to study this book for English Literature, and I feel that this slightly hindered my enjoyment of the book, though in all honesty- while it sets up a great premise for other books, and movies etc; I found the book to be rather unremarkable and was in no way moved, or any other emotion one is supposed to feel。 Though the description is vivid, and therefore enjoyable to read。

I love Treasure Island and, while I expected a very different story, I had reasonably high expectations for this。 Also, my girlfriend read it not long ago and really enjoyed it, although to be fair she loves anything by Stevenson。Disappointingly, I got about a third of the way through it before abandoning it。 It's a shame to give up on such a short book, especially one that's so famous and considered such a classic, but I found it boring to the point that I struggled to actually register much of I love Treasure Island and, while I expected a very different story, I had reasonably high expectations for this。 Also, my girlfriend read it not long ago and really enjoyed it, although to be fair she loves anything by Stevenson。Disappointingly, I got about a third of the way through it before abandoning it。 It's a shame to give up on such a short book, especially one that's so famous and considered such a classic, but I found it boring to the point that I struggled to actually register much of the story。 It seemed that the author wanted to write about anything except Jekyll and Hyde。 Telling the story from the perspective of an outsider like this probably adds a lot to the mystery if you don't already know what the mystery is (as pretty much anyone reading this nowadays does) but even if I'd never heard of Jekyll and Hyde before I don't think I'd have gotten much further with this little book, simply because I really didn't enjoy the way the story was being told。Despite all this, it's possible the fault lies with me, as I read the first portion of this whilst worn out on a plane, and another two little portions over the next 36 hours of jet lag, so it's entirely possible tiredness has prevented me from appreciating something that I might've enjoyed in other circumstances。 I might come back to it one day and give it another go but for now I just can't be bothered。 On the plus side though, it did help me sleep on the plane。 。。。more

Really cool plot and concept and all, but I didn't care for the way it was written。 It made what could've been this really cool and interesting story hard to get through and lowkey boring if we're being quite honest。Thought the ending was well-done, though。 Really cool plot and concept and all, but I didn't care for the way it was written。 It made what could've been this really cool and interesting story hard to get through and lowkey boring if we're being quite honest。Thought the ending was well-done, though。 。。。more
