Within this book is a decent short story， but the rest of it is filled with padded stories about gambling， movies and an array of characters who you never really care about。 Such a shame when The Godfather and The Sicilian are much better books by Mario Puzo。

Hands down the worst book I have read in the last two years。 Was Mario Puzo a virgin？ I think he must have been based on how he sexualises women like a literal 12 year old throughout this entire shit streak of a book （which started to get a bit okay in the last 1/5）

Excellent book chronicling the lives of the Clericuzo crime family its links in organised gambling， movies etc Cross Deleno and his cousin Dante Santiado are both favourites of Don Domenico Clarecuzo indeed Dante is his grandson and Cross his nephew， it was inevitable that Cross and Dante would end up in a fight for survival Cross handsome，rich and urbane whilst Dante of small stature and psychotic envied his cousin to death

"There was no doubt about it， people who pursued money rather than art had longer careers， got more pleasure in life， were much better and more socially valuable people than those artists who tried to show the divine spark in human beings。 Too bad you couldn't make a movie about that。 That money was more healing than art and love。 But the public would never buy it。" （41）But， oh， how they have！ Just see: Goodfellas， The Departed， Scarface， and yes， the goddaddy of them all， The Godfather。 I began "There was no doubt about it， people who pursued money rather than art had longer careers， got more pleasure in life， were much better and more socially valuable people than those artists who tried to show the divine spark in human beings。 Too bad you couldn't make a movie about that。 That money was more healing than art and love。 But the public would never buy it。" （41）But， oh， how they have！ Just see: Goodfellas， The Departed， Scarface， and yes， the goddaddy of them all， The Godfather。 I began The Last Don because I craved a swift fun summer read。 A beach book。 And remembering the infinite pleasure I derived from Puzo's masterpiece， I decided to recreate some semblance of that experience。 And yeah， I got it！Obvi， this is not as good。 Obviously！ But the prose， so fast and almost clumsy， sort of repetitive in its money and power examples， of events in history and farflung mobster fantasy， of power and money starving folks and the ugly deeds and their awful dispositions and scary characters。。。Anyway， this one is more Hollywood and sags a bit in the middle， with its producer and will-they-wont-they-make-THE-movie？ plot， its absolutely lesser than its ingenious predecessor。 The first major murder occurs around this point， too。 Not that Godfather was a bloodbath--no。 But the themes in Don are obviously the ones that worked and gave Puzo accolades （as well as two Oscars for screenplay！）。 The writer is intuitive because he knows what works: unfortunately， he's already shown that magic the first time around。。。 。。。more

It took quite some time getting used to。 Puzo is precise， exact and accurate as ever， writing a work of fiction like it's a long journalistic research。 Every character is shipped with a lot of description and a long story behind them。 There was a point I wasn't sure I wanted to finish it， too many names， too many plot branches and not so much action to tie them all up together into a gripping story。 But the second half of the book made up for that in spades。 What was looking as an investigation It took quite some time getting used to。 Puzo is precise， exact and accurate as ever， writing a work of fiction like it's a long journalistic research。 Every character is shipped with a lot of description and a long story behind them。 There was a point I wasn't sure I wanted to finish it， too many names， too many plot branches and not so much action to tie them all up together into a gripping story。 But the second half of the book made up for that in spades。 What was looking as an investigation into behind-the-scenes of movie making then grew into a crime tale， almost a thriller， and I closed the book with a good feeling in my heart。 。。。more

Puzo is a wonderful storyteller。 I initially expected a continuation off the first two and after I got through that disappointment， I struggled to stay interested through the movie business side plot。 I would’ve liked a different ending， which I won’t spoil here！ Overall， it was okay。

Character development As the fourth in this series， was getting worn with mafioso。 However， Puzo’s writing excelled and the way he developed all characters as well as the mystery was classic work。 So， amazing。 Thankful for the experience。
