Summary

Nonstop action at a machine gun pace。 If you aren't reading Nick Petrie, now is the time to start。--C。J。 Box

Peter Ash tangles with dangerous enemies and terrifying technology in the newest thriller from bestselling author Nick Petrie。

A man wanted by two governments, Peter Ash has found a simple, low-profile life in Milwaukee, living with his girlfriend June and renovating old buildings with his friend Lewis。 Staying out of trouble is the key to preserving this fragile peace 。 。 。 but when Peter spots a suspicious armed man walking into a crowded market, he knows he can't stand by and do nothing。

Peter does interrupt a crime, but it wasn't at all what he'd expected。 The young gunman appeared to have one target and one mission--but when he escapes, and his victim vanishes before police arrive, it seems there is more to the encounter than meets the eye。 Peter's hunch is proven correct when a powerful associate from his past appears with an interest in the crime, and an irresistible offer: if he and June solve this mystery, Peter's record will be scrubbed clean。

While Peter and Lewis trace the gunman, reporter June digs into the victim of the incident, a man whose face rings a bell in her memory。 As their parallel investigations draw together, they're thrust into the path of a ruthless tech thief, an eerily cheerful assassin, a brilliant and troubled inventor, and a revolutionary technology that could wreak devastation in the wrong hands。 But for Peter, even more is at stake: this investigation is his only path to a life free from the threat of prosecution or prison。 Before the end, he'll have to fight harder than ever before to ensure that freedom doesn't come at too high a cost。 。 。 。

Always enjoy these novels。 Liked the increased focus back to June。 Enjoyed the technology angle, even if it did get a bit over the top by the end。

A riveting read, despite the fact that several of the key characters somewhat stretch reality (but, then, that's what some fiction is supposed to do, right?)。A couple of ex-military buddies -- both, of whom, are, of course, not only buff but proficient in all kinds of altercations and, to balance things off, one of whom is white and the other Black -- interrupt what appears to be a mass shooting about to happen。 Although that turns out to have been a misreading of the situation, it does plunge t A riveting read, despite the fact that several of the key characters somewhat stretch reality (but, then, that's what some fiction is supposed to do, right?)。A couple of ex-military buddies -- both, of whom, are, of course, not only buff but proficient in all kinds of altercations and, to balance things off, one of whom is white and the other Black -- interrupt what appears to be a mass shooting about to happen。 Although that turns out to have been a misreading of the situation, it does plunge them into another murky world of evil men, even more evil plots, a young female mastermind of chemistry and physics, and a frightening -- but highly possible -- adaptation of advanced AI。And, of course, the lead hero's girlfriend is not only pretty and svelte (I mean, what else, right?), but she is an intrepid reporter who brilliantly follows up every lead, uncovers key facts, and faces down her editor on several occasions。 A regular Lois Lane。Oh, and just for good measure, throw in a large, lovable, but fierce dog AND a tough ol' 98 year old lady, and you've got quite a mix。OK, having said this, I nonetheless salute the author for writing what is a genuine page-turner。 All of these somewhat stock characters work and their is many a plot-twist to keep the reader attentive。 For those who enjoy this kind of genre I believe you will find this a most satisfactory and enjoyable read。 。。。more

If I read a series, I like to read it in order, but, for reasons known only to her, a woman in my bookclub selected this book for discussion。 It is #6 in the series。 So, maybe it was because I haven't read any of the other books, but I just couldn't get into this one。 There was alot of chasing after bad guys who stole things I couldn't really understand。 I couldn't make myself care about the main characters。 Their expertise with multiple fire arms, scaling tall buildings, surveillance and a ques If I read a series, I like to read it in order, but, for reasons known only to her, a woman in my bookclub selected this book for discussion。 It is #6 in the series。 So, maybe it was because I haven't read any of the other books, but I just couldn't get into this one。 There was alot of chasing after bad guys who stole things I couldn't really understand。 I couldn't make myself care about the main characters。 Their expertise with multiple fire arms, scaling tall buildings, surveillance and a quest for justice even putting themselves and loved ones in jeopardy, seemed over the top。 Maybe it would make more sense to me if I had read the first 5 books and knew the history and development of the characters。The book took place in Milwaukee, WI, it's where the author lives。 I appreciate the mention of streets and landmarks, but it felt like the author was just dropping the names because he knew them。 It would mean nothing to people who didn't live in the area。Unfortunately, this book didn't inspire me to read the rest of the series。 。。。more

Another great book by Mr Petrie。 I have waited a long time for this one。 June is the target in this book。 It is usually Peter who finds the trouble。 I liked June and Peter’s next door neighbor, Franny。 Of course Lewis is always around to help Peter。 I was kind of disappointed to not find out the fate of Sparks and KiKo。

A pretty good story, but too much technical stuff and too many characters to keep track of。

The Breaker is a good, hard-and-fast techno-thriller。 Peter Ash is a former Marine now living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin。 He struggles with PTSD and finds it hard to adjust to the slow pace of life outside of a battle zone。 So when he and his friends spot an unusual-looking man walking into a shopping mall with an automatic rifle, they quickly spring into action。 But the gunman doesn't open fire inside the mall; instead, he finds and corners another man and clones the contents of his phone。 One of The Breaker is a good, hard-and-fast techno-thriller。 Peter Ash is a former Marine now living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin。 He struggles with PTSD and finds it hard to adjust to the slow pace of life outside of a battle zone。 So when he and his friends spot an unusual-looking man walking into a shopping mall with an automatic rifle, they quickly spring into action。 But the gunman doesn't open fire inside the mall; instead, he finds and corners another man and clones the contents of his phone。 One of the overriding themes of this novel is that of the many advancements in technology happening today, not all of them are good, and some are downright dangerous。 And when you consider that Facebook's former internal slogan was, "Move fast and break things," and that this slogan has been largely adopted by the tech industry at large, you'll understand how rapidly the technology of today is evolving, and how this is not always a good thing。 Author Nick Petrie doesn't really dwell on the technology, telling this instead at a rapid-fire pace and concentrating on the characters。 Completely absorbing! 。。。more

Read as an audiobook narrated by Stephen Mendel about 12。5 hours in length。 Very good techno/thriller with a great cast of characters。 Interesting premise and not so techno heavy that it was hard to follow (except maybe what the government guys are doing in the background)。 Perfect for a road trip。 Ex-marine Peter Ash is dealing with his own demons but he has support from his side-kick and ex criminal Lewis and girlfriend June。 There's an evil and no-so-stable scientist, some weird tech, and a g Read as an audiobook narrated by Stephen Mendel about 12。5 hours in length。 Very good techno/thriller with a great cast of characters。 Interesting premise and not so techno heavy that it was hard to follow (except maybe what the government guys are doing in the background)。 Perfect for a road trip。 Ex-marine Peter Ash is dealing with his own demons but he has support from his side-kick and ex criminal Lewis and girlfriend June。 There's an evil and no-so-stable scientist, some weird tech, and a good scientist whose work is being stolen by the bad guy。 Easy to listen to, easy to follow, rapid paced。 I would have liked to see more development of the main character--Peter Ash--but do realize that this is #6 in his series--maybe it's me that needs to read these, too。 Really liked it "4" with hints of a 5。 。。。more

If you like Jack Reacher, you'll feel right at home with Peter Ash。 He's more into action where I think Reacher is a little more intellectual, but it's a wild ride regardless。 Moves fast。 Enjoy。 If you like Jack Reacher, you'll feel right at home with Peter Ash。 He's more into action where I think Reacher is a little more intellectual, but it's a wild ride regardless。 Moves fast。 Enjoy。 。。。more

Nick Petrie’s series of thrillers featuring on the adventures of his main character, Peter Ash takes a bit of a different tack with novel #6 , “The Breaker”。 The book is all out action and excitement as Ash, recently returned from a wild , dangerous and nearly fatal ( to Ash and very damaging and/or fatal to a bunch of people trying to stop Ash) trip to Iceland finds more trouble, this time at home。 For the first time, June, the woman he loves is in great danger。 It all begins when she, Ash and Nick Petrie’s series of thrillers featuring on the adventures of his main character, Peter Ash takes a bit of a different tack with novel #6 , “The Breaker”。 The book is all out action and excitement as Ash, recently returned from a wild , dangerous and nearly fatal ( to Ash and very damaging and/or fatal to a bunch of people trying to stop Ash) trip to Iceland finds more trouble, this time at home。 For the first time, June, the woman he loves is in great danger。 It all begins when she, Ash and Peter’s friend, employer and sometime backstop, Lewis, are at a local mall where they witness a figure with a gun threatening a businessman type。 Of course, Ash cannot just stand by, and his good Samaritan action brings down a world of hurt。 Worse the focus of the maniacal , smiling killer is on June。 June’s investigative reporter instincts ignite as she begins an on line search for a face she remembers form past news, the face of the businessman dude。 Without giving away too much of the plot, it involves a reclusive, ruthless tech multimillionaire, a young girl who has developed a revolutionary breakthough that will make multimillions for the owner of her secret and a hired killer who hides behind his cheerfully smiley face a fearful yen to wield his blades。 I liked the author putting some of the focus on June , giving her a central part of the book。 The new voice is welcome, allowing readers of the series insight into the close relationship of Ash and June, not to mention Lewis and a new supporting character, a feisty ninety - year old scotch drinking widow with a freezer full of chocolate- mint cookies。 Author Petrie refreshes his novel writing nicely。There is a sci- fi element to the novel ( not to its detriment)。One scene of Ash and Lewis chasing the villains by latching on to a speeding semi is a bit hard to swallow, but it is exciting。 In fact, I can easily see this novel turned into a movie of Terminator mixed with Fast and Furious, with a bit of Slasher flic for scares。 Fun, exciting well- done。 The only warning is one of violence and gore。 Oh: at one point June is driving through Chicago with a carload of guns and worrying。 In Chicago? I’d guess cars without a cache of guns would be the oddity。 。。。more

I've grown weary of this series。 The action is good, but the dialog feels artificial, the interior monologue is unartful, and the constant references to the 'white static' in Peter's head get tedious after a while。 I've grown weary of this series。 The action is good, but the dialog feels artificial, the interior monologue is unartful, and the constant references to the 'white static' in Peter's head get tedious after a while。 。。。more

Thought the story was a little slow in areas and had a lot of worthless filler。 Thought it was strange that the hacker would met the person she wanting to get money from in person over just having him wire it to some account and then move the money around to make it untraceable like other things she had done。

This was an enjoyable book。 The plot gets a little Sci-Fi, but held my interest。 The writing was good and I may read another book in the series。

Ah Peter Ash comes home to Milwaukee。 The action starts on page 2, doesn't ever let up。 And we get a lot of one of my favorite characters Lewis, impeccable and deadly as always。 And to add to that we get a little preview at the end of where our characters may end up in the next book。 My husband and I sort of fight to see who gets to read first, so this time we took two copies out of the library。 Ah Peter Ash comes home to Milwaukee。 The action starts on page 2, doesn't ever let up。 And we get a lot of one of my favorite characters Lewis, impeccable and deadly as always。 And to add to that we get a little preview at the end of where our characters may end up in the next book。 My husband and I sort of fight to see who gets to read first, so this time we took two copies out of the library。 。。。more

Five is perfect so I am rating this 4。5。 This book is very good。 The author brought in other characters for readers to care about besides Peter, Lewis, and June。 That is a nice change。 I especially like Fran。 It does get a little techie, but our world is moving that direction。 You can read the synopsis provided by GoodReads。 This is just my opinion: The books in this series continue to improve and engage the reader。 If you like action, twists and turns, and interesting (and scary!) characters, g Five is perfect so I am rating this 4。5。 This book is very good。 The author brought in other characters for readers to care about besides Peter, Lewis, and June。 That is a nice change。 I especially like Fran。 It does get a little techie, but our world is moving that direction。 You can read the synopsis provided by GoodReads。 This is just my opinion: The books in this series continue to improve and engage the reader。 If you like action, twists and turns, and interesting (and scary!) characters, give this book a try。 。。。more

Ok- this book was alright but nothing to write home about。 A few observations: June is an asshole。 Like, ew, can’t stand her。 And that is coming from a (somewhat) bossy go-getter- she is just TOO much in this book。 I get trying to do your job but she was just extra。 Extra annoying, extra vulgar when it wasn’t necessary。 Extra angry when she had no cause to be。 Just extra。 Hated her。 The whole Edgar character seemed far fetched and ridiculous。 The ending lacked a sense of reality。 I am not saying Ok- this book was alright but nothing to write home about。 A few observations: June is an asshole。 Like, ew, can’t stand her。 And that is coming from a (somewhat) bossy go-getter- she is just TOO much in this book。 I get trying to do your job but she was just extra。 Extra annoying, extra vulgar when it wasn’t necessary。 Extra angry when she had no cause to be。 Just extra。 Hated her。 The whole Edgar character seemed far fetched and ridiculous。 The ending lacked a sense of reality。 I am not saying that if Nick Petrie writes another book based in the Midwest I won’t read it… I am saying I will be in no rush to read it。 2。5 🌟 。。。more
