Summary

In hardcover for the first time ever! A gorgeously illustrated anniversary edition of the book that launched the epic Farseer Trilogy, praised by George R。 R。 Martin as "fantasy as it ought to be written," featuring a new foreword by Robin Hobb and ten full-color illustrations。

Twenty-five years ago, the first novel featuring FitzChivalry Farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the Fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning。 Thus began a beloved saga, spanning multiple series, full of adventure, magic, and sinister plots。 To celebrate a quarter-century of wonder, this special edition of Assassin's Apprentice presents a modern classic as it's never been seen before: in hardcover, with ten beautiful full-color illustrations by Magali Villeneuve。

Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father's gruff stableman。 He is treated as an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him secretly tutored in the arts of the assassin。 For in Fitz's blood runs the magic Skill--and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his family。

As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood。 Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission。 And though some regard him as a threat to the throne, he may just be the key to the survival of the kingdom。

I enjoyed the world and magic system, but it was pretty uneventful until the end, lots of great descriptive writing though! I do not normally read this type of fantasy book, so maybe taken as a whole trilogy the storyline will liven up a bit。 I will keep reading!

This book is amazing。 It reminded me of why I love fantasy。 The descriptions are beautiful, you want to be friends with the good characters and drop a vial of poison in the wine of the bad ones。 And the animals!!!Can't wait to get stuck into book 2。Best thing I've read in agesssss。 This book is amazing。 It reminded me of why I love fantasy。 The descriptions are beautiful, you want to be friends with the good characters and drop a vial of poison in the wine of the bad ones。 And the animals!!!Can't wait to get stuck into book 2。Best thing I've read in agesssss。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot, dare I say more than Harry Potter? Yes。 I。 dare。 I don’t care if JKR comes for me, she has been cancelled and can’t touch me。 The world building is just as good as JK, but listeeeeen, the characters and plot is so much better(in my opinion)。 Maybe it’s just that this book is more suited to an older audience, I did find myself looking up a lot of words。 I’m not going to go in depth to explain why I think this is better than HP I just want anyone who liked it to read this I liked this book a lot, dare I say more than Harry Potter? Awesome world building and characters。 The only thing that felt off was the pace。 Some chapters dragged on and other flew by。 Excited to read the next one

I actually booked this book up on the recommendation of a friend。 I'd seen it around bookstores and I wasn't sucked in by the cover or the blurb。 I had no idea what I'd been missing out on。 This book is EPIC。 One of the best fantasy adventure novels I've ever read。 Robin Hobb has the ability to make even the mundane fascinating。 I recall a page or two description of a stable that was so perfectly written it made you feel like it was absolutely crucial to the integrity of the story as a whole。 A I actually booked this book up on the recommendation of a friend。 I'd seen it around bookstores and I wasn't sucked in by the cover or the blurb。 I had no idea what I'd been missing out on。 This book is EPIC。 One of the best fantasy adventure novels I've ever read。 Robin Hobb has the ability to make even the mundane fascinating。 I recall a page or two description of a stable that was so perfectly written it made you feel like it was absolutely crucial to the integrity of the story as a whole。 A unique magic system, violence and warfare not over done, humour, loss and aa brilliant cast of characters make this book what it is, special。 。。。more

I really liked this book :) It's a great foundation for the 15 more books to come in this world。 It's not quite 5 Stars for me because some parts are very slow and I had to push myself to keep reading but it was worth it in the end and I'm excited to continue with the second book soon :) I really liked this book :) It's a great foundation for the 15 more books to come in this world。 It's not quite 5 Stars for me because some parts are very slow and I had to push myself to keep reading but it was worth it in the end and I'm excited to continue with the second book soon :) 。。。more

I've been meaning to dive into this series for a while。 It was beautifully written without any of the cringe worthy pitfalls I feel like most modern day books fall into especially in the fantasy genre。 If you're looking for something exciting from start to finish this isn't that。 It is a proper introduction to a trilogy, which means tons of background story and character development。 The action doesn't start until past the 60% mark and it was glorious (even though it was short lived)。 As the tit I've been meaning to dive into this series for a while。 It was beautifully written without any of the cringe worthy pitfalls I feel like most modern day books fall into especially in the fantasy genre。 If you're looking for something exciting from start to finish this isn't that。 It is a proper introduction to a trilogy, which means tons of background story and character development。 The action doesn't start until past the 60% mark and it was glorious (even though it was short lived)。 As the title promised there are assassinations, but be warned it was exciting as finding out the weather。 I get the author couldn't dive into details surrounding each assassination, but it felt damn lazy。 I read some reviews for the follow-up and it seems more of the same。 If the entire trilogy is 80% talk and 20% adventure then I'm reluctant to go further。 Feeling a bit torn on this one。 。。。more

This series is very popular, and although I found the world interesting, the abuse inflicted upon Fitz in the book is overwhelming, unrelenting, and horrific at times。 Although I know this is part of the "growth" of the character, I regularly had to walk away from the book and just do something else because it was bothering me so much。 By the time I got to the end of the book, I was exhausted and tired and left asking why I was reading this。 In the end I needed to look at the synopsis of the oth This series is very popular, and although I found the world interesting, the abuse inflicted upon Fitz in the book is overwhelming, unrelenting, and horrific at times。 Although I know this is part of the "growth" of the character, I regularly had to walk away from the book and just do something else because it was bothering me so much。 By the time I got to the end of the book, I was exhausted and tired and left asking why I was reading this。 In the end I needed to look at the synopsis of the other books, and it never relents throughout the entire series。 I am not interested in wading through thousands of pages of continuously inflicting pain and failure and suffering on a character to then have no real reward at the end。 This book gets a hard no from me。 。。。more

What's funny about this novel is it has so much going against it that if I were a betting man I'd be almost certain to pick against it, but here I am writing a very easy 5 star review -1) I typically can't stand first person, but Hobb's writing style is so well done I truly appreciate being a part of Fitz's eyes and experiences, especially considering the magic introduced in the series。 You really feel like you're along for the ride and the emotional toll of certain events tend to resonate more What's funny about this novel is it has so much going against it that if I were a betting man I'd be almost certain to pick against it, but here I am writing a very easy 5 star review -1) I typically can't stand first person, but Hobb's writing style is so well done I truly appreciate being a part of Fitz's eyes and experiences, especially considering the magic introduced in the series。 You really feel like you're along for the ride and the emotional toll of certain events tend to resonate more in this style as opposed to traditional third person。 It was the perfect choice to portray this story。2) I'm not usually one for character heavy books but Hobb has an absolute talent of writing characters that you truly empathize with along with relationships that feel like they have such real weight。 The weaving of plot into the story was the perfect amount needed to keep things moving while also developing characters for what I assume is a much longer haul。3) Trope-y assassin training and cool action assassination scenes are not my thing, but ironically this book didn't have a whole lot of those despite the name。 The way they are handled (meticulously debated, mentioned sort of as an aside if actually done) is actually really subtle and I came to appreciate that。 All of the training - cue Rocky Montage - was mostly just a way of developing Fitz and his relationships further rather than focusing on cool knife and poison tricks。 This, for me, is a huge positive。 I recently read that the naming of this trilogy was a publishers decision and not Hobb herself who wanted to name this Chivlary's Bastard, and that makes total sense。Overall, the relationships and characters push this story into an excellent tier, but I shouldn't take away points from the storyline which had plenty of intrigue and politics along with bits of worldbuilding given to the reader as breadcrumbs through the book。 From what I've read this is by far the weakest of the entire series so I can't wait to see what's in store, as this was the perfect introduction to this world。 。。。more

Gli fa qualche differenza uccidere un criminale o una persona innocente che semplicemente si trovava nel posto sbagliato al momento sbagliato? Non ci è dato sapere。 。。。more

I little bit of a slow start to this one, although part of that may have been me having a busy week。 A lot is made of Hobb's strong character work, and I agree。 What I most enjoyed, however, was her prose。 Since I finished The Wheel of Time last year, I've been longing for another work in the fantasy genre written by an author who possesses the gift of descriptive prose like Robert Jordan, and I think I've found her。 I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the books in this series。 4。5/5 I little bit of a slow start to this one, although part of that may have been me having a busy week。 A lot is made of Hobb's strong character work, and I agree。 What I most enjoyed, however, was her prose。 Since I finished The Wheel of Time last year, I've been longing for another work in the fantasy genre written by an author who possesses the gift of descriptive prose like Robert Jordan, and I think I've found her。 I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the books in this series。 4。5/5 。。。more
