I hope that Lyla Lee keeps writing the Mindy Kim series for a long time, because my Korean-American daughter loves it! In an author's note, Lee mentions that it was written in the two week quarantine period while she was waiting to get into Korea, and I think that her writing is really good for that time frame and also how young Lee is (ok that sounds super ageist of me。。。)。 In the book, Mindy gets to go to Korea for the first time, meet her extended family, eat yummy Korean food, and visit vari I hope that Lyla Lee keeps writing the Mindy Kim series for a long time, because my Korean-American daughter loves it! In an author's note, Lee mentions that it was written in the two week quarantine period while she was waiting to get into Korea, and I think that her writing is really good for that time frame and also how young Lee is (ok that sounds super ageist of me。。。)。 In the book, Mindy gets to go to Korea for the first time, meet her extended family, eat yummy Korean food, and visit various sights in Seoul like Geongbukgong Palace and Namdaemun Market。 My six year old could relate to nearly all of it--wanting to go to Korea, wanting a new hanbok (Korean cultural dress, wanting to connect with her Korean cousins), which was a beautiful thing! For the other Mindy Kim books, my three year old has read aloud with us, but she was a little less interested in this one, I think because there seem to be less illustrations。 There is one (adorable) illustration per chapter, which means that there are 4-5 unillustration pages, so her attention was wandering a bit。 But they both really liked all the Korean language references they knew (harabeoji, gomap-sumnida, etc。)。 And when we read about eating mul-naengmyun, the kids had just had it that day, so they roared with laughter when the characters mentioned that Appa only puts cucumber on top, while Halmoni puts beef, egg, and cucumber, because their Appa had only put cucumber。 Anyway, these relatable things are why I love this series, but the best part is that anyone, Korean or not, can enjoy。 (Also, I'm Chinese just like Mindy's dad's girlfriend Julie, so I could totally relate to her first trip to Korea too!) 。。。more

I check out a lot of early readers since I am a teacher, and Mindy Kim books always make me cry! They’re the representation I never saw when I was younger。 Reading how Mindy navigates the complexity of loving family but having a language barrier, and thinking about my own experiences with that moving back and forth from Japan and the US and how much I missed my grandparents was just too much 🥺 Also, I love the healthy relationship between Mindy and her Appa。 I feel like so often we don’t see hea I check out a lot of early readers since I am a teacher, and Mindy Kim books always make me cry! These are great for ANY kid ✨ 。。。more

Great depth of story for an early reader (trigger warning on Mindy's deceased mom - who passed away after extended illness prior to this series' origin)。 My daughter is obsessed with Mindy's campaigns to get a dog, good friends, and fantastic vacations。 We have re-read these on the regular for the last month - great series。 Great depth of story for an early reader (trigger warning on Mindy's deceased mom - who passed away after extended illness prior to this series' origin)。 My daughter is obsessed with Mindy's campaigns to get a dog, good friends, and fantastic vacations。 We have re-read these on the regular for the last month - great series。 。。。more

Mindy is so adorable and I loved this latest adventure of hers! It is such a sweet story of family and love and heritage。 I also was excited to have a book that discussed the experience of traveling to a new country so well for children--this is not an experience you find in a lot of children's books and I am excited to have this for my kids。 Such a great book。 Mindy is so adorable and I loved this latest adventure of hers! Mindy Kim is nine years old and visiting Korea for the first time!
