Summary

The only daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has always known she’d been raised for one purpose and one purpose only: to marry。 Never mind her cunning, which rivals that of her twin brother, Kenshin, or her skills as an accomplished alchemist。 Since Mariko was not born a boy, her fate was sealed the moment she drew her first breath。

So, at just seventeen years old, Mariko is sent to the imperial palace to meet her betrothed, a man she did not choose, for the very first time。 But the journey is cut short when Mariko’s convoy is viciously attacked by the Black Clan, a dangerous group of bandits who’ve been hired to kill Mariko before she reaches the palace。

The lone survivor, Mariko narrowly escapes to the woods, where she plots her revenge。 Dressed as a peasant boy, she sets out to infiltrate the Black Clan and hunt down those responsible for the target on her back。 Once she’s within their ranks, though, Mariko finds for the first time she’s appreciated for her intellect and abilities。 She even finds herself falling in love—a love that will force her to question everything she’s ever known about her family, her purpose, and her deepest desires。

3。5 stars kept at 3 for goodreads。 This is one that I really loved the premise of and the world it lived in, but just didn't feel like I was connected to the story as much as I wanted to be。 Overall good, but not great。 2021 Ripped Bodice Summer Romance Bingo: Revenge Quest 3。5 stars kept at 3 for goodreads。 This is one that I really loved the premise of and the world it lived in, but just didn't feel like I was connected to the story as much as I wanted to be。 Overall good, but not great。 2021 Ripped Bodice Summer Romance Bingo: Revenge Quest 。。。more

Truly left me in tears。 Made me feel like I want to also create such piece of art。 Beautiful in all ways and lovely no matter what。

The author deciding to name an entire clan Hattori had me rolling on the floor for hours

Good but the romance was kind of rushed。 Imagine you buy a package of oreos but you open the package and all of the oreos have quadruple stuff in them and you’re like woahhh this is too much too fast how did we get here。 Yeah that basically describes the romance here, genuinely thought I skipped a chapter around the end。

A tough, resilient, lovable protagonist, whose life was all planned out for her, but she takes the one chance she is given to make her life so much more。

I really wanted to love this, but the vibe just wasn't there。 I also was very surprised about who the love interest turned out to be -- I thought it would've been the other guy tbh。 I really wanted to love this, but the vibe just wasn't there。 I also was very surprised about who the love interest turned out to be -- I thought it would've been the other guy tbh。 。。。more

For someone whose sharpest weapon is supposedly her mind Mariko is frustratingly dim and myopic throughout the entirety of this book。 While not entirely unenjoyable I think this was an unfortunate case of concept being stronger than execution。

There were a lot of plot twists, and some satisfying scenes of reckoning。 The Mulan trope is not a new one, but it was wielded quite masterfully here。

I really enjoyed this, Renee Ahdieh did an excellent job of weaving her tail。 The way the character grows, how she makes mistakes and finds her own way despite it all。 It shows how we don't always get what we thought we want in the end but along the way we find something so much more。 It's wonderfully pieced together and drew me in with every word。 Would definitely recommend to read! Slightly higher than mediocre, but not the best。 Though don't get intimidated by the three stars, the story was entertaining。 MINOR SPOILERS! Stuff(ones that I remembered at least) I liked from the story:The part where she almost got done in the woods genuinely scared me。 The author managed to make me feel put in her place and fear for my life。 Wonderfully done。 The fucker deserved what happened to him。 There's also feminism in the story。 Imo it could've been presented better, but it still is a nice touch。And that plot twist?? i should have seen the plot twist coming, it was SO obvious the first 1/3 of the book was a little hard to get into, but the rest was really good

I feel like we heard a ton about how smart and clever Mariko was, but her actions never actually confirmed this。

This book was pretty good。 Very enjoyable。 I knocked off a star because it could get a little boring at times and because I feel that there was some missed opportunities for some more back story and world building。 Some points of the book were over explained and some not enough(if that makes sense)。 Overall I did find this to be very enjoyable and I’m definitely looking forward to the sequel。 I’m hoping the sequel explains some of the missing elements to the first installment。

Oh。 My。 Lord。This is another one of those books that has been on my to-read list for the longest time。 Absolutely in love with the fact that it is set in feudal Japan, and its comparison to Mulan is certainly accurate。 However, it exceeded my expectations even more in so many ways。 One of this novel's greatest strengths is the pacing。 From the beginning, we do not waste much time on exposition and are almost immediately thrown into the event that sets Mariko's path in motion。 Punctuated by occas Oh。 My。 Lord。This is another one of those books that has been on my to-read list for the longest time。 Absolutely in love with the fact that it is set in feudal Japan, and its comparison to Mulan is certainly accurate。 However, it exceeded my expectations even more in so many ways。 One of this novel's greatest strengths is the pacing。 From the beginning, we do not waste much time on exposition and are almost immediately thrown into the event that sets Mariko's path in motion。 Punctuated by occasional perspectives from other characters, we get to experience Mariko's journey up the ranks of the infamous Black Clan disguised as a man。 Along the way, she learns much about herself and where she truly belongs, not as a woman or a man, but as a person。 I was extremely happy with how the idea of womanhood was portrayed in this novel, as something not to be disgusted by but something that would be defined on one's own terms and one's own terms alone。 For each female character, this meant something different, yet all of them hold their own power nonetheless。 I am particularly excited to see how their perspectives may develop in the sequel。As for plot and worldbuilding, there is simply so much to unravel, much more than I initally expected。 However, the history and mythology is highly compelling, and the plot is jam-packed with thrills, deception, and romance。 No wonder I was gasping and squealing the entire time。 After the ending, I am most definitely eager to get my hands on the next novel。 。。。more

This book was a blast of beautifully woven words and skilful storytelling。 Each line felt too real to me, all the chills and suspense I felt while reading it is just the proof of how amazing and skilful writer Renée is。 A must read。
