Summary

First American Publication

This stunning and elegiac novel by the author of the internationally acclaimed Wind-Up Bird Chronicle has sold over 4 million copies in Japan and is now available to American audiences for the first time。 It is sure to be a literary event。

Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before。 Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable。 As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman。

A poignant story of one college student's romantic coming-of-age, Norwegian Wood takes us to that distant place of a young man's first, hopeless, and heroic love。

This is my first Murakami book and it is suffice to say he exceeded my expectation。 Although, through many critics I've come to know that this is the least Murakami-style oriented, saying that it is "just a love story", I had no problem with it。 The moment Toru hears "Norwegian wood", it incites his memories of Naoko to carry him away and thus result in this beautiful narration of his story of love and life。 I have absolutely been gripped through every sentence and every phrase of the narrator。 This is my first Murakami book and it is suffice to say he exceeded my expectation。 Although, through many critics I've come to know that this is the least Murakami-style oriented, saying that it is "just a love story", I had no problem with it。 The moment Toru hears "Norwegian wood", it incites his memories of Naoko to carry him away and thus result in this beautiful narration of his story of love and life。 I have absolutely been gripped through every sentence and every phrase of the narrator。 There may not be much resemblance of the characters to you but you understand them so well that it feels they are a part of you set in motion。 This one is a dark, depressing love story that which is romantic in its own way。 I look forward to read more of the author's works。 。。。more

Wow。 It definitely was a slow book for me like when Murakami writes its with so much descriptions。 Ex。 Toru was reading。 Toru enter his dorm room, strom trooper not there, the cans poster staring at him back as he sit down to read his American classic book。 The ending really caught me off guard though。 I think it’s like a cycle。 Though we do now that Toru is alive, the ending might have been what Naomi felt after losing Kizuki (the whole loss of emotion and just being hella confused), but in thi Wow。 It definitely was a slow book for me like when Murakami writes its with so much descriptions。 Ex。 Toru was reading。 Toru enter his dorm room, strom trooper not there, the cans poster staring at him back as he sit down to read his American classic book。 The ending really caught me off guard though。 I think it’s like a cycle。 Though we do now that Toru is alive, the ending might have been what Naomi felt after losing Kizuki (the whole loss of emotion and just being hella confused), but in this case it was toru screaming for midori。 Hopefully, midori and toru are good because I really liked their relationship。 Also what happened to storm trooper I’m so curious 。。。more

this is a good book, though very male centric! I understand

if i wanted to know about mediocre men fantasizing depressed girls i would talk to men irl。 how is everyone around him finding the main character so exceptionally great, nice and intelligent when it feels like he’s just wandering in his life and not really caring about the people ? i don’t know, it didn’t worked for me。otherwise, i loved the descriptions of places and times, it was really sumptuous

Norwegian Wood is just like The Catcher in the Rye: there's a certain age when you should read the book for it to resonate with you properly。 The prose was stunning and I loved how the story had many layers so that you could interprete it in a plethora of different ways。 However, I must admit that the portrayal of women made me cringe at times (mostly all those parts about sex), thus I cannot give it full 5 stars。 Norwegian Wood is just like The Catcher in the Rye: there's a certain age when you should read the book for it to resonate with you properly。 The prose was stunning and I loved how the story had many layers so that you could interprete it in a plethora of different ways。 However, I must admit that the portrayal of women made me cringe at times (mostly all those parts about sex), thus I cannot give it full 5 stars。 。。。more

going into it, i really wanted to like this book。 on the positive side, the prose was gorgeous and engaging but the characters and “plot” fell completely flat for me。 it just left me feeling completely indifferent- I didn’t love it nor did i hate it, as it stirred practically no emotions within me。 also, murakami sure nails the “woman written by a man” trope better than anyone else! what a shame。。
