Summary

Dragonfly Falling is the second book in the critically acclaimed epic fantasy series Shadows of the Apt。 It's brought to you by Adrian Tchaikovsky, winner of the Arthur C。 Clarke Award。

Every hero must be tested 。 。 。

The Wasp Empire’s armies are on the move。 The city of Tark will be first to feel their might, now preparing for siege。 And within its walls, Salma and Totho will take a stand alongside their Ant-kinden brethren。 But they’ll face weaponry and numbers such as the Lowlands have never seen。

Meanwhile, the Empire's secret service has deemed Stenwold Maker too dangerous to live。 So Major Thalric is dispatched to eliminate Stenwold and destroy his beloved city of Collegium。 For if this centre of learning is lost, it will crush all hope of intelligent resistance。

As the Empire's troops continue their relentless advance, their young Emperor pursues another, even darker goal。 His success would trigger a reign of blood lasting a thousand years。

Dragonfly Falling is followed by the third book in the Shadows of the Apt series, Blood of the Mantis。

It just caught me… fantastic and a lot of fun。 Good book to read for pleasure, not a Nobel price tho… must it be?

War。。。 War never changes。This is pretty much exactly the sequel I expected。 This is an unabashed series of war fantasies。 So this book was about the war。 Oh sure, there's some adventure, a touch of romance and a deeper mystery trying to butt its way in, but at core, Dragonfly Falling is about the war。The armies of the Wasp Empire which had only just started to besiege the Lowlands in the previous novel are now penetrating the country in full force with multple fronts opening at once。 We have eye War。。。 War never changes。This is pretty much exactly the sequel I expected。 This is an unabashed series of war fantasies。 So this book was about the war。 Oh sure, there's some adventure, a touch of romance and a deeper mystery trying to butt its way in, but at core, Dragonfly Falling is about the war。The armies of the Wasp Empire which had only just started to besiege the Lowlands in the previous novel are now penetrating the country in full force with multple fronts opening at once。 We have eyes (both new and old) in all of those theatres。 The crew is still there, even if apart, Stenwold watches over the defense of Collegium, Salma and Totho are at Thark, were their loyalty is tested, Tisamon and Tynisa are attempting to contact the Mantis and Achaeos and Che are up in the mountains, trying to send a message to the Moths。Obviously, everything goes kind of wrong and kind of right。 Everybody ends up in unexpected, but still unsurprising, places。 There are betrayals, acts of rebellion, gallantry, last-minute heroics, etc。 The battles are still described with gripping intensity and even in the chaos of a charge, you keep a clear picture of what is going on。 You never lose sight of the overall geopolitical situation either。 The way the chapters are interspersed, you're always aware of what's going on at different parts of the Lowlands。I greatly enjoyed the new PoVs within the Empire itself, we get a good look at the politicking and the infighting within the higher echelons of the Wasp Empire。 We even get a glimpse at the paranoid Emperor looking into the legends of Mosquito immortality。The parts I liked the least were the rather feeble attempts at romance。 Salma, prince of the Dragonflies, continues on his quest to rescue his Butterfly love。 They're in love, and that's it。 The sentiments are never explored any more than that。 They just are。 The second romance is the one between Stenwold, the stout older Beetle spymaster, and Arriana, the young and seductive Spider spy。。。 Give me a break。 May-November Romances are pretty much always hyper creepy。 Even moreso when one of the characters involved feels a bit like an author stand-in。But besides that, I still greatly enjoyed this novel。 I love this idea of a world war story told in a period of rapid industrialization in a land inhabited by insect/human hybrids。 It managed to be both completely out there, and still unfortunately familiar。I've already started on the next book in this series, Blood of the Mantis。 。。。more

Lots of things going on in this book because the War has come and the main characters are all scattered in different cities trying to defend themselves from the Wasp Empire advance。 It's rich with battle scenes and military strategy discussions。 And I was not bored by it。 Thalric continues to be that complex lawful-evil character turned lawful-neutral。 Totho makes a sacrifice that is probably changing his alignment。 It's war and people die。 All the characters go through the process of growing up Lots of things going on in this book because the War has come and the main characters are all scattered in different cities trying to defend themselves from the Wasp Empire advance。 It's rich with battle scenes and military strategy discussions。 And I was not bored by it。 Thalric continues to be that complex lawful-evil character turned lawful-neutral。 Totho makes a sacrifice that is probably changing his alignment。 It's war and people die。 All the characters go through the process of growing up, caught in a reality that is much harsher and more violent than they've ever imagined。 They are not students anymore, it's the real deal。 。。。more

Brilliant。 I thought very few books could compare with Children of Time - but this saga is (so far, at least - I have finished Book 3 now) even better。 Amazing。 READ IT! :D

This one took me much longer to read than Book 1, but I still enjoyed it。The world-building is still just as enthralling and original as before - if anything, even better than Book 1。 There are very few series that can match Shadows of the Apt in this area。I also really enjoyed the way this book moved forward the overall arc of the series。 Some flaws started to show, however。For one, while I do still very much enjoy most of the characters introduced in Book 1, Tchaikovsky introduces TONS more in This one took me much longer to read than Book 1, but I still enjoyed it。The world-building is still just as enthralling and original as before - if anything, even better than Book 1。 There are very few series that can match Shadows of the Apt in this area。I also really enjoyed the way this book moved forward the overall arc of the series。 Some flaws started to show, however。For one, while I do still very much enjoy most of the characters introduced in Book 1, Tchaikovsky introduces TONS more in this book, and I found myself getting a bit overwhelmed。 Combine that with that fact the the author also likes to jump quickly between POV's and I had to stop a reread a ton of passages。 This book also had significantly more action than Book 1。 In some ways that was fun, but it was also chaotic。 Again, the bouncing around, but also - not much time to get know these new characters。Overall, this is a good book that leaves me definitely wanting to read Book 3。 It's not perfect, however, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little disspointed after how much I enjoyed Book 1。 。。。more

I had more difficulty getting into this book。 I think because it expanded the cast of characters, and it's a little harder to keep track of everything via audio。 It did pick up, though, and is a better book than the previous one in most regards。 The author made some very interesting character choices here that I'm really looking forward to seeing how they play out。 Alas, in my excitement to finally get to consume these books via audio, I didn't realize that the final installments won't be releas I had more difficulty getting into this book。 I think because it expanded the cast of characters, and it's a little harder to keep track of everything via audio。 It did pick up, though, and is a better book than the previous one in most regards。 The author made some very interesting character choices here that I'm really looking forward to seeing how they play out。 Alas, in my excitement to finally get to consume these books via audio, I didn't realize that the final installments won't be released until November 2021。。。 So I'm going to wait until later this year to pick these back up and hope I don't forget too many of the rich details Tchaikovsky has created for this world。 。。。more

Bugs bugs bugs 🐛🐛🐛This world building is so good!!!! Plot is pretty decent as well, but the battles were a bit drawn out + there were too many of them so it was difficult to keep track when one ended and the next began。 I would say the same about the abundance of perspectives, but all the characters are distinct so that didn’t pose too much of an issue。Bugs! bugs! bugs! 🐛🐛🐛!!!!

Once I had teared my eyes off The Empire in Black & Gold, my appetite was justly sated by this wonderful book。 Adrian pulls out every stop to bring his arguably best facet in his arsenal as an author。。。His world-building。 I was fascinated by the endless intricacies of the world around me as he brings into focus the wasp army and its functions and the lowlands and their relations to one another。 All in all, another decent entry for Adrian in this series。

The second instalment in Mr Tchaikvosky’s Shadows of the Apt was a clear improvement over the first。 Not only have the characters developed from the previous, but also the action encompasses a larger territory and a more varied set of characters。 This also means that more insectoid races are brought into the fold。The characters are all a bit more bearable than in the first book: Stenwold is perhaps the greatest problem as he has become chronically unsuitable for the position at Collegium that he The second instalment in Mr Tchaikvosky’s Shadows of the Apt was a clear improvement over the first。 Not only have the characters developed from the previous, but also the action encompasses a larger territory and a more varied set of characters。 This also means that more insectoid races are brought into the fold。The characters are all a bit more bearable than in the first book: Stenwold is perhaps the greatest problem as he has become chronically unsuitable for the position at Collegium that he has, in effect, worked for all this time。 The former students are already displaced enough around the entire Lowlands to feature separately, doing their own thing more often than not。 Uctebri, the addition in Capitas (another really poor name), makes for a very interesting new character, another mystic as opposed to the more technologically oriented group of people。The action centers around war, and the author’s style is better in his descriptions of the siege and battles that take place here。 I think this could relate to the simpler setup of the actions: one side versus another, doing all they can to defeat the opponent。 The Vekken and the Imperials are also given a voice, so the reader sees both sides at the same time。 This adds a fair bit to the action, though I’m still wondering if it might be preferably to have surprised sprung upon the reader。Totho is the most interesting character in this instalment while Cheerwell is rapidly becoming the most annoying of the bunch。 Nevertheless, we’ll see where this is going。 Totho’s journey is a welcome break from the others in any case, while Drephos adds a welcome other side to the Imperials。I liked this a lot more than the first of the series。 This review was originally posted on my blog。 。。。more

Too damn much war。 That is absolutely my least favourite thing to read about, and this book is barely anything else。 It's pretty well written for war, and somebody who enjoys the subject might love this book, but I hated most of it。There is good stuff in between, like the question of how/whether one can make one's peace with the use to which one's engineering prowess and opportunity is put in a war, and poor Totho is really being put through the wringer here and I can't think this will end well Too damn much war。 That is absolutely my least favourite thing to read about, and this book is barely anything else。 It's pretty well written for war, and somebody who enjoys the subject might love this book, but I hated most of it。There is good stuff in between, like the question of how/whether one can make one's peace with the use to which one's engineering prowess and opportunity is put in a war, and poor Totho is really being put through the wringer here and I can't think this will end well for him。 But there's just too much detailed fighting I had to carefully try to skip over in order to get to the character development and further description of the different races and societies。It might have been better for me to read this series before coming across the marvelous Children of Time; it's not usually a good idea to read an author's early work after having read their best。 。。。more

When I initially started reading this series I was impressed by the opening story, with the ingenuity of the world it opened up。 After finishing the first book my position was: Great world building, huge potential, but I wouldn't continue reading the series。I started reading book 2 because I had nothing else to read, which is a bad start。 Unfortunately the problems continue。 While the first book had long fight scenes within the plot, by the second book there's some plot between the fight scenes。 When I initially started reading this series I was impressed by the opening story, with the ingenuity of the world it opened up。 After finishing the first book my position was: Great world building, huge potential, but I wouldn't continue reading the series。I started reading book 2 because I had nothing else to read, which is a bad start。 Unfortunately the problems continue。 While the first book had long fight scenes within the plot, by the second book there's some plot between the fight scenes。Tchaikovsky obviously likes war and fighting。 He likes writing about the mechanics of it。 The sieges, the tactics, the excruciatingly detailed descriptions of different weapons and inventions, the seemingly endless variety of how people can die。 Even when we return to something that might propel the plot further we get stuck in page after page of sword fighting, duels and more dying。 This doesn't appeal to me, so the series is clearly not for me。One further comment is how the female characters are written。 In this world women are inherently untrustworthy, are they desirable in any way they will have sex with you (the you is almost always a man) and then betray you。 It always amazes me that a book can have such an abundance of characters yet fail to write women as normal people almost every time。 This combined with sexual violence being everywhere in this book and being presented as inherently uncomplicated and/or normal, I'm left with a nagging feeling that the writer can't really imagine women beyond sexual beings。(view spoiler)[ Tynisa sleeps with a man by order, then kills him。 Her mother is only defined by the crime of giving birth to her then dying。 Che is only whole and able to discover her Art after having sex with Achaeos。 Totho's arc and turn to the Empire is defined by Che not loving him (hide spoiler)]What I like remain the same since the first book: The world presented is interesting and I always like cyberpunk elements mixed with magic and fantasy。 What I didn't like, condensed: The lack of plot and how Tchaikovsky can't write women。 。。。more
