3。5 stars - this was a very beautiful story in a lot of ways, I preferred the fox’s story… but I’m confused about who the intended audience is。 it’s categorized as “middle grade” & I think it’s language is appropriate for that level, but the subject matter is so, so heavy, in several ways - war, abandonment, a dead parent, an emotionally abusive parent, death & even some light gore。 it’s hard to imagine a child reading & enjoying this independently。

This book was amazing! Super emotional。 I cried almost the half of the book

Nadia Choszczyk

a beautiful story about the friendship between a fox and a man。 ideal for children and adults。 modern classics tailored to the Little Prince。

Such a sweet story about a boy and his fox, as well as the negative affects of war。

A book that was purchased for my kiddo, although she hasn't read it yet。 My husband read it, though, and really enjoyed it - so I read it too。 I thought it was good but not amazing。 A book that was purchased for my kiddo, although she hasn't read it yet。 My husband read it, though, and really enjoyed it - so I read it too。 I thought it was good but not amazing。 。。。more

***MAYBE SPOILER*** This book was not nearly as sad as I expected it to be。 But I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing。 Was it just poorly written so that we, as readers, were not invested enough by the end to care, or was it so well written that we knew the ending was the right one? I don't know。 But I went into this book expecting to sob。。。 and I didn't。 ***I'm a little unsure how I feel about this book。 I gave it 4 stars, so I must have really liked it。 Right? Yes, I mostly did。 ***MAYBE SPOILER*** This book was not nearly as sad as I expected it to be。 But I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing。 Was it just poorly written so that we, as readers, were not invested enough by the end to care, or was it so well written that we knew the ending was the right one? Yes, I mostly did。 I LOVED Pax's chapters。 I liked the character of Vola and how she and Peter helped each other。 I appreciated that this book was about a fox instead of a dog - something different。 However, many of the things Peter did - especially traveling so far, so quickly, while severely injured - were just SO implausible that it almost pushed the book into the realm of fantasy for me。 And this book has some VERY graphic moments, especially for a middle grades book。 I read this aloud to my husband while we were driving。 He teaches 4th grade, and he said he absolutely *could not* read the book as is to his students。 I teach HS, so what exactly 4th/5th graders can handle is a little out of my wheelhouse, but I was shocked by the depictions of animal deaths/maimings that happened on page。Regardless, after I read the last page and closed the book, I have to say that I enjoyed the experience。 。。。more

I wanted to like this book more。 It just felt too shallow and the ending too abrupt。

This book is very clearly written and follows all of the "boy and his dog" rules, along with a few thought-provoking or emotional scenes, but it doesn't go anywhere beyond that。 It's a serviceable installment in the genre。 I enjoyed it because I love books about animals and wilderness survival and grizzled ol' vets, but that doesn't mean the writer did anything special。 This book is very clearly written and follows all of the "boy and his dog" rules, along with a few thought-provoking or emotional scenes, but it doesn't go anywhere beyond that。 It's a serviceable installment in the genre。 I enjoyed it because I love books about animals and wilderness survival and grizzled ol' vets, but that doesn't mean the writer did anything special。 。。。more

Peter and Pax are a boy and his dog, or more like a boy and his fox。 They have been together since Pax was a kit。 War comes to the area and Peter's dad has to leave with the military。 Peter is sent to his grandfather's to live while Peter's father is away。 Pax is not allowed to go and is set free in nature to live。 Peter feels lost without Pax and goes on a journey to find him。 Along the way, he learns some hard life-lessons。 Will Pax and Peter reunite?

Better than 3 stars but a bit shy of 4。 The story of a boy and his pet fox who become separated and the journey to find one another。 Better than it sounds, and told by the fox, (Pax), and the boy, (Peter), in alternating chapters。 Terrific book for tweens。

Laura

Ending was good but overall ok。

Brought my The Fox and The Hound emotions roaring back。 Straight up cried tears over this one

Oof。 Someone gave my son this book。 It's not quite Where the Red Fern Grows but it's a gutpunch of a book, with a lot less resolution than you'd usually expect from a kids' book。 A boy runs away to rescue his pet fox and runs straight into a war zone。 There's a serious amount of character death, catastrophic injury, and philosophical musing。 I think it's also trying a little too hard to be literary。 But there are definitely some gorgeous bits and a mature child will have a lot to think about。 Oof。 Someone gave my son this book。 It's not quite Where the Red Fern Grows but it's a gutpunch of a book, with a lot less resolution than you'd usually expect from a kids' book。 A boy runs away to rescue his pet fox and runs straight into a war zone。 There's a serious amount of character death, catastrophic injury, and philosophical musing。 I think it's also trying a little too hard to be literary。 But there are definitely some gorgeous bits and a mature child will have a lot to think about。 。。。more

This book was an excellent look into the lives of several people and a few foxes。 Right before a young man’s father is about to take part in a local series of battles, he takes his son to release Pax - the fox raised by the child since he was a small kit。The son realizes that he must find pax and bring him home。 He rakes on every challenge to make it happen。 Pax also learns how to live in a world of wild foxes and danger。

Nikki

Very sad。 I felt the storyline was a little under developed。The impact of war was a strong message that was threaded throughout but It bothered me that I couldn't place the era。 Very sad。 I felt the storyline was a little under developed。The impact of war was a strong message that was threaded throughout but It bothered me that I couldn't place the era。 。。。more

I was so invested in the characters, I couldn't put this book down。 There's so much depth and richness to this story, it's unlike any of its kind, making it a great one for adults as well as kids。 Though I expected the ending, a greater meaning lay beneath it, giving the reader something more to think about。 I didn't want to let this one go, and was sad coming here to make a review。 But then I noticed the #1。 WAIT。。。there's a SEQUEL?! Hot diggity! I don't have to say goodbye just yet。 I was so invested in the characters, I couldn't put this book down。 There's so much depth and richness to this story, it's unlike any of its kind, making it a great one for adults as well as kids。 Though I expected the ending, a greater meaning lay beneath it, giving the reader something more to think about。 I didn't want to let this one go, and was sad coming here to make a review。 But then I noticed the #1。 WAIT。。。there's a SEQUEL?! Long journey with some excitement and heartfelt moments wedged between glacial chapters。 Pax could stand to shed 10ish chapters。 Still worth a read, but not recommended for very young children due to some violent moments。

Recenzje_oli

Trochę mniej niż 4, bo momentami książka mi się dłużyła, ale historia piękna。

Sasha

Told in chapters that alternate the perspective between Peter and his fox, Pax。 Malcolm much preferred the Pax chapters。 Deep themes with a timeless setting。
