Deep within the mountain, a great creature stirred in its sleep。 Its eyes rolled back in its head, and its wings jerked wide open。。。

When 12-year-old Billy Chan finds out his parents are sending him to a summer camp in middle-of-nowhere China, he doesn't know what to expect。 There he meets fellow campers Dylan, Charlotte, and Ling-Fei, and together they stumble upon an age-old secret: there are four powerful warrior dragons hidden deep within the mountain behind the camp! They need the children's help to set them free before terrible evil in the guise of the Dragon of Death is unleashed upon the earth。 Billy and his friends must set off on a dangerous adventure that will take them to the heart of the Dragon Realm。 But can they save the dragon and human worlds from destruction?

This is a a solid start to a middle grade fantasy series! It’s a delightful mash-up between between the best parts of Wings of Fire, Percy Jackson, and Eragon! A fun read that is very quick, Great for younger readers for sure, particularly with the shorter chapter length。 It felt a little too fast moving at times and I would have liked some of it to have been more developed。

Picked this one up so that I can read it ahead of a promotion。 It has a great group of characters, not the best kids dragon book I have ever read, but it has a nice pacing and should appeal to younger to readers, ages 7 to 9。

This is a tricky one to review。 I have no idea if it was intended as such, but this functions as a pretty decent bridge between a series like Percy Jackson or Fablehaven and something like Dragon Masters。 It resembles Percy Jackson in that it's an epic quest, but the writing level is much lower - though not as low as a Branches series。 It's longer than those early chapter books, but not too long, either。 In some ways this is the series I've been waiting for, because I get a decent number of requ This is a tricky one to review。 I have no idea if it was intended as such, but this functions as a pretty decent bridge between a series like Percy Jackson or Fablehaven and something like Dragon Masters。 It resembles Percy Jackson in that it's an epic quest, but the writing level is much lower - though not as low as a Branches series。 It's longer than those early chapter books, but not too long, either。 In some ways this is the series I've been waiting for, because I get a decent number of requests for high-low books - high interest story and subject matter (in this case, adventure and dragons with a tiny bit of Chinese mythology, maybe?) but simple writing。 In other ways, it was at times a chore for me to read because the writing was so obvious and utilitarian, and the plotting so senseless (what can we throw at the four main characters now? who cares if it relates to anything we've set up so far?)。 Children's books don't have to be beautifully (or even well) written to capture children's attention, however, and I expect this will be both appealing and achievable for plenty of my readers。 So basically, it's a bit like those cartoon movies that kids love but make their parents want to claw their eyes out。 You've been warned。 。。。more

A solid juvenile story about dragons and adventure and magic。 Simple but well done world building, diverse characters, decent plot twists, and a good vocabulary level for children as they grow in reading。

A fast-paced, easy read。 The themes of friendship, courage, loyalty etc。 are explored as the kids at the summer camp bond with each other as well as their dragons。 There is not a lot of depth in the exploration – rather straightforward like those featured in My Little Pony and Friends, where the messages are overt and repeated, perhaps because the book is targeted at a lower middle grade readership。 Considering the setting of the book and the ethnicity of one of the authors, I’d expected more Ch A fast-paced, easy read。 The themes of friendship, courage, loyalty etc。 are explored as the kids at the summer camp bond with each other as well as their dragons。 There is not a lot of depth in the exploration – rather straightforward like those featured in My Little Pony and Friends, where the messages are overt and repeated, perhaps because the book is targeted at a lower middle grade readership。 Considering the setting of the book and the ethnicity of one of the authors, I’d expected more Chinese culture to permeate the book, and was disappointed that there was only a little, and rather superficial at that。 I was also a bit surprised, maybe even troubled, that the kids take the dragons’ at their word just like that – that they are the good guys and the other hitherto unseen dragon is the bad guy – and then proceed to do what the dragons tell them to do, which includes breaking into someone’s cabin and stealing stuff。 One of the kids’ super powers (bestowed when bonded with a dragon) is hypnotising people into doing whatever you want。 That’s kind of disturbing too, especially when there’s no real discussion on the ramifications of such a power, i。e。 the “with great power comes great responsibility” talk that needs to be given when a kid is suddenly empowered。 Still, the adventure quest is exciting enough for the target age group, and I think it would be a good pick to tempt the reluctant reader, since it’s easy to read and fairly enjoyable, even if it doesn’t attract kids who read more precociously。 。。。more

I had so much fun reading this and I cannot wait to read more! The dragons are wonderful! Very excited to get straight into the sequel。

An action-packed adventure perfect for Year 3/4 children - a fairly simple storyline with lots of interesting details, magic and, of course, dragons。 Billy Chan doesn’t realise he’s about to try to save the world when he arrives at his summer camp, though with some new friends and some superpowers along the way, what can stop them?

Marie the Librarian

Oh what a lovely adventure and such magic! Plus dragons are always great。

Many thanks to Jonathan Ball Publishers for #Gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。Dragon Mountain has been in my line of sight for a while and I always enjoy reading new authors so I grabbed this book at my first available opportunity; which I then proceeded to make for myself, lol。What was supposed to a "language camp" in the middle of nowhere China (to help with his Mandarin and stuff, you understand) turns into an impossible adventure。 Billy gets thrust Many thanks to Jonathan Ball Publishers for #Gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。Dragon Mountain has been in my line of sight for a while and I always enjoy reading new authors so I grabbed this book at my first available opportunity; which I then proceeded to make for myself, lol。What was supposed to a "language camp" in the middle of nowhere China (to help with his Mandarin and stuff, you understand) turns into an impossible adventure。 Billy gets thrust together with some unlikely campmates, Charlotte, Ling-Fei & Dylan, whose bonds soon become unbreakable。 Being absolutely fascinated with Asian cultures, I loved this fast-paced, action-packed fantasy that will definitely appeal to more than just 12-year-olds。 Dragon Mountain is highly atmospheric and rich in culture; btw, did I mention how hungry I was while reading this book。。。? 。。。more

I love dragons so I’m drawn to any books that feature them。 Some disappoint, but this one definitely doesn’t。 A rattling good adventure。 I am eager to read book two。

Great attractive looking dragon book, perfect for fans of Wings of Fire and moving on from Dragon Defenders。 The age of the protagonist being 12 makes the idea of going to a summer camp in China more believable than the age of the readers who seem to be going for this book, namely about age 7-9。 The kids I am selling it to are reserving it in their droves and number two has been ordered。

For a dragonrider genre book, I really liked 'Dragon Mountain'。 I think what really won me over was that even though Billy Chan was the main POV character, he and his friends (and dragons) overcame their challenges together。 As a bonus, the dragons have fun personalities。 Can't wait for book 2。 For a dragonrider genre book, I really liked 'Dragon Mountain'。 I think what really won me over was that even though Billy Chan was the main POV character, he and his friends (and dragons) overcame their challenges together。 As a bonus, the dragons have fun personalities。 Can't wait for book 2。 。。。more

Any book with dragons on the cover is bound to check out at my library, especially with a group of friends who are all bonded to their specific dragon。 The writing style is very simplistic and a bit tell-y, so this is probably best for middle-grade readers on the younger end of the scale, like 4-5 graders。 It was a quick book--not very long at all。 I found it a bit hard to keep up with all the different powers of the humans and dragons with the quick pace this moved at。 Because of that, it was a Any book with dragons on the cover is bound to check out at my library, especially with a group of friends who are all bonded to their specific dragon。 The writing style is very simplistic and a bit tell-y, so this is probably best for middle-grade readers on the younger end of the scale, like 4-5 graders。 It was a quick book--not very long at all。 I found it a bit hard to keep up with all the different powers of the humans and dragons with the quick pace this moved at。 Because of that, it was a bit hard to feel grounded in the dragon realm。 The realm felt pretty random--like one second it felt like the digital world in Digimon and the next it felt like something out of a Miyazaki movie with walking caves, and I couldn't really get my bearings。 Also, there's a scene where a rock troll rips the teeth right out of Billy's head that left me rather surprised--they couldn't have offered to trade someone's hair instead of Billy's teeth?? 。。。more

An amazing book with a super exciting twist at the end I did not see coming!!! A great book for young (9+) fantasy and dragon lovers!
