Summary

America’s pregnancy bible answers all your baby questions。
When can I take home a pregnancy test?
How can I eat for two if I’m too queasy to eat for one?
Can I keep up my spinning classes?
Is fish safe to eat? And what’s this I hear about soft cheese?
Can I work until I deliver? What are my rights on the job?
I’m blotchy and broken out—where’s the glow?
Should we do a gender reveal? What about a 4-D ultrasound?
Will I know labor when I feel it?
Your pregnancy explained and your pregnant body demystified, head (what to do about those headaches) to feet (why they’re so swollen), back (how to stop it from aching) to front (why you can’t tell a baby by mom’s bump)。 Filled with must-have information, practical advice, realistic insight, easy-to-use tips, and lots of reassurance, you’ll also find the very latest on prenatal screenings, which medications are safe, and the most current birthing options—from water birth to gentle c-sections。 Your pregnancy lifestyle gets equal attention, too: eating (including food trends) to coffee drinking, working out (and work) to sex, travel to beauty, skin care, and more。 Have pregnancy symptoms? You will—and you’ll find solutions for them all。 Expecting multiples? There’s a chapter for you。 Expecting to become a dad? This book has you covered, too。

Encyclopedic resource, but ask your doctor。

Very comprehensive and a helpful guide throughout the pregnancy。 It was great to have a resource that explained what was going on with my body and to know that everything was normal。 It also helped me know what to ask at doctor's appointments。 Would definitely recommend having on hand as a resource, even if you don't read it cover to cover。 Very comprehensive and a helpful guide throughout the pregnancy。 It was great to have a resource that explained what was going on with my body and to know that everything was normal。 It also helped me know what to ask at doctor's appointments。 Would definitely recommend having on hand as a resource, even if you don't read it cover to cover。 。。。more

Truly terrible。 Full of claims that are unproven, the writing style is annoying, way too much information on things that don’t matter at all (old wives tales) and not nearly enough information or data on things that actually matter。

5 out of 10。This could be a good reference book if you can overlook some major problems。 If you’re going to read 10 pregnancy books, it may be worth including。 There are plenty of helpful sections, but the deficiencies make it a minefield and likely only a net positive for the most forgiving of readers。You can read my full review here:https://wrincs。com/what-to-expect-whe。。。 5 out of 10。This could be a good reference book if you can overlook some major problems。 If you’re going to read 10 pregnancy books, it may be worth including。 There are plenty of helpful sections, but the deficiencies make it a minefield and likely only a net positive for the most forgiving of readers。You can read my full review here:https://wrincs。com/what-to-expect-whe。。。 。。。more

This book gets the job done but it only gets two stars because at the end of the day it’s tone is pretty judgmental and it feels a bit condescending。 I think you’re either a What to Expect When You’re Expecting mom or an Expecting Better mom and I’m definitely the latter。 Nice to have the month by month break down but particularly the authors attitude toward weight gain during pregnancy/at all is just antiquated。 The good thing is you can easily skip around and I DNR a decent chunk。

- It’s a complete guide to new mom to be。- Very informative - Helps to be prepared and get full knowledge on what’s going on currently with both mom’s and babies changes。- What to expect in coming days and the wonderful day on which the baby is born :)

Back when I was a student, I played a game called The Sims and practiced pregnancy through virtual game characters。 A part of preparing for pregnancy in that game was to find the time for your character to read pregnancy books—the more your character read, the better off the child will be once he/she is born。 One such book was titled, What to Expect When You're Expecting, a title I also saw on the pregnancy shelves of my local Barnes & Noble bookstore。 I told myself, "Ah, when I become pregn Back when I was a student, I played a game called The Sims and practiced pregnancy through virtual game characters。 A part of preparing for pregnancy in that game was to find the time for your character to read pregnancy books—the more your character read, the better off the child will be once he/she is born。 One such book was titled, What to Expect When You're Expecting, a title I also saw on the pregnancy shelves of my local Barnes & Noble bookstore。 I told myself, "Ah, when I become pregnant for real someday, I am going to purchase this book and read it!"So I did, many years later when pregnancy became an actual hard-earned reality。 The reviews of this book are often negative。 I read a lot of comments stating it's overwhelming, it's anxiety-inducing, and that it isn't helpful。 I disagree with all three opinions。 The book is divided into manageable chunks—if you read it from cover to cover like one reads a book, then yes, the amount of information can be overwhelming—but if you treat it like a manual and read only the relevant sections, it really isn't that bad。 In terms of it being anxiety-inducing, I have trouble seeing how this book can cause anxiety, unless you're already anxious about pregnancy before approaching this book。 There are some sections that can be unnerving, such as the final chapters about pregnancy complications and pregnancy loss, but these parts can easily be avoided if they're irrelevant。 I did, on the other hand, get irritated with the book when I experienced a miscarriage—the cheerful tone annoyed me, so I ended up shelving the book and not opening it again (not even to read the Pregnancy Loss chapter), until I became pregnant again and felt a little bit more certain that my second pregnancy would not be a repeat of my first。As for its helpfulness, I personally think the book is very comprehensive。 It has a lot of breadth。。。but not much depth。 It covers everything, including:• trying to conceive• how to look for practitioners• preparing for appointments• baby's growth milestones• mother's symptoms• coping sections for dads• pregnancy with multiples• dietary guidelines• exercise tips• labor & birth plans• post-partum recovery• breastfeeding• rough outline of the baby's first month• pregnancy complications• pregnancy lossMost of the book is divided by each month of pregnancy, and each month outlines expectations for the weeks that the month covers。 The tips about diet, exercise, symptoms, and basically everything else a pregnant woman would wonder about are scattered throughout the entire book。 This is one thing I dislike about this guide—I don't like the way it's organized。 For example, there may be a blurb about pregnancy headaches; this is described under the Third Month, but what if you experience pregnancy headaches in the Second Month? You're not going to encounter that helpful information unless you read ahead or take the time to search for it in the Index。Conclusively, do I recommend purchasing this book? To be honest, no, I don't recommend it。 Lol。 The book doesn't give you any more insight into pregnancy than a quick Google search does。 The internet offers the same thing and more。 In fact, if you're keen on getting the book anyway, be aware that What to Expect When You're Expecting has the same exact content available online for free! The only difference is that the online version has color images and videos, along with a quick search function that is far more practical than running your finger down the Index lists。 So why shell out the money to buy the book when you can just get the same info online? But if I were to give a rating, it definitely deserves a solid 4 stars at least for being what it claims to be: an "all-in-one" pregnancy manual。 It's useful and insightful for those who lack internet connection and know absolutely nothing about pregnancy。 。。。more

Pretty helpful in the early days of pregnancy when I had questions about everything。 Overall I would have appreciated a few more references and citations rather than purely anecdotal evidence, but this is a fine starting place。

While this book does contain the information I wanted to know (potential symptoms/what is normal, what will happen in doctor visits, and explanations of medical procedures and terms), I agree with other reviewers who take issue with the infantilizing tone of the book。 If the stupid puns and endless references to your 'cutie-patootie baby-to-be' were taken out, it would be a much better (and shorter!) book。 My strategy for reading it was to kind of read each paragraph as fast as possible, skippin While this book does contain the information I wanted to know (potential symptoms/what is normal, what will happen in doctor visits, and explanations of medical procedures and terms), I agree with other reviewers who take issue with the infantilizing tone of the book。 If the stupid puns and endless references to your 'cutie-patootie baby-to-be' were taken out, it would be a much better (and shorter!) book。 My strategy for reading it was to kind of read each paragraph as fast as possible, skipping over the offensive language and only absorbing the facts I was looking for。 It sounds like there are better options out there that contain the same helpful information without assuming that you're having a baby because you think infants are cute, and for no deeper reason。 。。。more

Fun, lighthearted, engaging。 Doesn't take itself too seriously。 The colloquial, friendly, down to earth tone was enjoyable。 It reads like a knowledgeable, inclusive and obliging friend with a lighthearted sense of humour, who sounds as pleased about your pregnancy as you are。 Chapters are divided into each month from pre-pregnancy to postnatal, with cute illustrations of bub and belly each month。 Topics are separated under headings, information is pithy, straightforward and cuts to the chase。 Co Fun, lighthearted, engaging。 Doesn't take itself too seriously。 The colloquial, friendly, down to earth tone was enjoyable。 It reads like a knowledgeable, inclusive and obliging friend with a lighthearted sense of humour, who sounds as pleased about your pregnancy as you are。 Chapters are divided into each month from pre-pregnancy to postnatal, with cute illustrations of bub and belly each month。 Topics are separated under headings, information is pithy, straightforward and cuts to the chase。 Content covers all manner of information one could want, from serious e。g。 preeclampsia to trivial e。g。 can I still dye my hair? Each chapter details bub's developmental stage, mum's symptoms and common mumsy Q&A。 While the book is friendly and easygoing, it doesn't shy away from the grave matters - in particular, the last 5th of the book is dedicated to pregnancy complications and miscarriages。 Overall, a cheerful, enjoyable, reassuring and informative one-stop pregnancy shop。 。。。more

I enjoyed this as an understanding of how my baby is growing and what is normal for my body throughout pregnancy。 Also, since this is my first pregnancy, I think this book was great for learning terms I’ve never heard or understood before。 Beyond that the advice is standard of what you hear from doctors and other corporations of what is necessary for you during pregnancy, after and for your baby。 I personally found this generic and unhelpful。 If you are like me, someone who questions vaccination I enjoyed this as an understanding of how my baby is growing and what is normal for my body throughout pregnancy。 Also, since this is my first pregnancy, I think this book was great for learning terms I’ve never heard or understood before。 Beyond that the advice is standard of what you hear from doctors and other corporations of what is necessary for you during pregnancy, after and for your baby。 I personally found this generic and unhelpful。 If you are like me, someone who questions vaccinations, typical hospital practices and other standard practices this is not going to give any useful information。 But all in all it was worth reading to learn the basics of pregnancy and my unborn baby。 。。。more

Very informative and everything is broken down to Trimester, Months, and Weeks。 There's even an index in the back for quick reference。 It's got exercises to do during pregnancy and afterwards, some ways to care for baby afterwards, and lots of info on What to Expect the entire pregnancy。 Would definitely recommend for anyone who is having their first kid and has no idea all the little things that come along with pregnancy (hello, lightning crotch??) It is what it is, really。 Not exceptional, and a bit on the dry side (while weirdly trying to be funny?) But a good primer or introduction。

This book can serve as a guideline for expectant mothers, though I found some of the information conflicting with my doctor's recommendations。 It's definitely a book you can jump around with to each section and is more like a reference guide than a front to back read。 This book can serve as a guideline for expectant mothers, though I found some of the information conflicting with my doctor's recommendations。 It's definitely a book you can jump around with to each section and is more like a reference guide than a front to back read。 。。。more

A comprehensive detailing of all that you need to know right from the time you conceive till the time of delivery。 The language is friendly, inclusive and puts you at ease even when you are in the throes of panic (especially if you happen to relate to what you have been reading)Must read for all expectant mothers :)

I'm glad I read this。 I feel prepared for a lot as I am in my last week of pregnancy (fingers crossed)!I would be glad to read something different, too, but this book encompasses so much in a very easily-digestible format。 The writing is put into language that a teenager should be able to understand (and as I teach high school, I think I should have a solid grip on that expectation), which is important since teenagers get pregnant, too! It's not dumbed down for that demographic, though。 It still I'm glad I read this。 I feel prepared for a lot as I am in my last week of pregnancy (fingers crossed)!I would be glad to read something different, too, but this book encompasses so much in a very easily-digestible format。 The writing is put into language that a teenager should be able to understand (and as I teach high school, I think I should have a solid grip on that expectation), which is important since teenagers get pregnant, too! I'm very glad I also took a class that gave me very clear expectations from a hospital, including videos, color diagrams, anecdotal experiences, and an instructor for question and answer portions。 。。。more

Most of the information you can find online or have come to you in a timely fashion through a pregnancy app。 However, I appreciated the information in book format and being able to point out specific things for my husband to read。 It was handy to have sitting on the coffee table and be able to flip through the different months and see what to expect as time went by。

A fairly decent, comprehensive book about all of the different stages of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum。 I didn't realize this was an older edition when I bought it, so it was a little dated, but not terribly so。 I would recommend it as something to read, especially if having your first child。 A fairly decent, comprehensive book about all of the different stages of pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum。 I didn't realize this was an older edition when I bought it, so it was a little dated, but not terribly so。 I would recommend it as something to read, especially if having your first child。 。。。more

Meh。 It's fine to skim as an overview, but there were so many puns and terrible dad jokes (read: every paragraph) that it went from cute and relatable to annoying and groan worthy really quickly。 The tone was guilt-ridden and especially in the first trimester made me feel like if not every bite out in my mouth was nutritious then i was harming the baby。 It also made me super paranoid that I had every rare complication in the first few weeks when everything was completely normal and fine。 It may Meh。 It's fine to skim as an overview, but there were so many puns and terrible dad jokes (read: every paragraph) that it went from cute and relatable to annoying and groan worthy really quickly。 The tone was guilt-ridden and especially in the first trimester made me feel like if not every bite out in my mouth was nutritious then i was harming the baby。 It also made me super paranoid that I had every rare complication in the first few weeks when everything was completely normal and fine。 It may be a classic, but perhaps it should stay in the past- there are many better books out there。 。。。more

If you can get past the obnoxious tone ('wink wink, cutesy' is the best way to describe it) this book is a good encyclopedia to have around, especially in the age of google and message boards。 I enjoyed going through this for each week of pregnancy, tracking baby's growth, setting expectations etc。 And honestly the chapter on birth was quite helpful and practical if it's all completely new to you - very approachable。 So yes, probably one of those books many families will just want to have on han If you can get past the obnoxious tone ('wink wink, cutesy' is the best way to describe it) this book is a good encyclopedia to have around, especially in the age of google and message boards。 I enjoyed going through this for each week of pregnancy, tracking baby's growth, setting expectations etc。 And honestly the chapter on birth was quite helpful and practical if it's all completely new to you - very approachable。 So yes, probably one of those books many families will just want to have on hand。 。。。more
