Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - "Brilliant 。 。 。 a celebration of human ingenuity [and] the purest example of real-science sci-fi for many years 。 。 。 utterly compelling。"--The Wall Street Journal

The inspiration for the major motion picture

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars。

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there。

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive。

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death。 The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first。

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet。 Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next。 Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

NAMED ONE OF PASTE'S BEST NOVELS OF THE DECADE

"A hugely entertaining novel [that] reads like a rocket ship afire 。 。 。 Weir has fashioned in Mark Watney one of the most appealing, funny, and resourceful characters in recent fiction。"--Chicago Tribune

"As gripping as they come 。 。 。 You'll be rooting for Watney the whole way, groaning at every setback and laughing at his pitchblack humor。 Utterly nail-biting and memorable。"--Financial Times

Really good! Read it cuz I love the movie and all the detail in the book is amazing! Not a five star for me because I had a hard time getting to the end even though I know what happens。 Overall enjoyed it though!

Yes Wil Wheaton is not the best narrator, BUT this was still an awesome book (and movie)。

Awesome premise, and I really enjoyed it, but the quality of the writing left a lot to be desired。 There were many sections where I wanted to "fix" the dialogue tags。 A lot of the science stuff went over my head and my mind wandered, and I would have liked some more character depth, but that's hard SF for ya。 Still, it was surprisingly funny in places, and very entertaining。 Really, a lot like the movie。 Actually, kinda want to see the movie again now。。。 Awesome premise, and I really enjoyed it, but the quality of the writing left a lot to be desired。 There were many sections where I wanted to "fix" the dialogue tags。 A lot of the science stuff went over my head and my mind wandered, and I would have liked some more character depth, but that's hard SF for ya。 Still, it was surprisingly funny in places, and very entertaining。 Really, a lot like the movie。 Actually, kinda want to see the movie again now。。。 。。。more

Great book Great book glad to see a movie that mostly follows the book。 I recommend both with book first。 … 。

Probably the finest space adventure story I know of! I listened to a YouTube audiobook version。 The characterization was outstanding and brought the characters, especially Mark Watney, to vivid life。。

Dusko Vorkapic

Read it 5 years ago, I read it almost without a break。

Parker Loesch

I could not put this book down。 The story was compelling, entertaining, and suspenseful。 I highly recommend it!

Anthony Matus

Absolutely hilarious。 Loved it!

If you haven’t read this book then it certainly is a must。 I haven’t seen the film but a friend of mine said “read this it’s probably the only book I haven’t given up on”。 I’m glad I did read it now and I recommend to anyone that hasn’t then do!

this was so exciting!! you can’t help but love mark watney and all his charisma。 i appreciated all the science and research that went into this book even if i didn’t fully grasp all the sciencey stuff i was engaged throughout the whole story and on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened to mark (okay so i watched the movie first a couple years back, did i actually know what was gonna happen: yes。 was i still shocked and anticipating every part: absolutely)

I really enjoyed listening to this one on Audible。 The narrator was engaging and I loved how it's written in diary form。 I am not usually a science fiction fan, but this was entertaining and a nice introduction to the genre! I'm not usually a fan of science fiction that puts scientific realism at the forefront, because I feel like it tends to skimp on interesting characters and engaging storytelling。 But this one has all of that in spades。 I'm not usually a fan of science fiction that puts scientific realism at the forefront, because I feel like it tends to skimp on interesting characters and engaging storytelling。 But this one has all of that in spades。 。。。more

Oh, this was such a page turner! Despite having watched the movie a few years back, I picked this book and was a little anxious。 But for no reason, as Mark Watney, our main protagonist, in the book is so engaging, funny and witty that even Matt Damon's performance in the movie pales in comparison。 The book allows the reader to step inside Markk's mind as he goes from being totally hopeless (being stranded on a planet millions of miles away does that to one) to cautiously hopeful and even a littl Oh, this was such a page turner! Something the movie desperately lacked was the ability to see Markk's inner monologue, and the book does a great job at taking us along the ride while he solves all the problems he's faced with。 That plus the amount of time the book actually dedicates to minutiae of actual science makes for a very gripping and satisfying read。 Even as I finished the book, fully knowing the conclusion having watched the movie, I still rooted for Markk Watney and was on the figurative edge of my seat in the last few pages。 One of the few books where I wished there was a sequel for me to immediately binge on。 。。。more

What a banger。Wish the ending was a little longer but overall super enjoyable book。

this was very very good。 i loved the survival aspect and humor。 the impossible tasks mark has to accomplish are just too insane for me to wrap my head around, but this book makes them so tangible。 my only issue was the narration was very science heavy and it took me out of the book (at times i literally didn’t understand what i was reading) and at times mark would say “i did this。 then i did that。” and it got old。but definitely worth the read。 such a great book。

I don’t rate books 5* often, but wow。 This book is absolutely fantastic, from beginning to end。

At first, I hated this book。 It was sooo boring。 What kept me going is that I listened to it read by Will Wheaton which helped。 Suddenly, I became invested and had to know if Mark would survive Mars。 My favorite part about audiobooks is that you can tune parts out, which is what I did for the technical bits。 I really enjoyed Mark's character and thought it was well written! I can't imagine the research that went into it。 At first, I hated this book。 It was sooo boring。 What kept me going is that I listened to it read by Will Wheaton which helped。 Suddenly, I became invested and had to know if Mark would survive Mars。 My favorite part about audiobooks is that you can tune parts out, which is what I did for the technical bits。 I really enjoyed Mark's character and thought it was well written! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Holy crap, I heard this book was good, but not THIS good。 Where do I begin, well let's start with the science。 I absolutely loved the attention to detail when it came to every problem Mark Watney would run into in Mars。 As a huge fan of applied sciences I loved the explanations。 Okay, next, the plot itself。 It was enticing to say the least。 It's a vaguely simple idea: Man stuck on Mars, man wants to survive。 But the fact Andy Weir was able to really raise the stakes after "I'm stuck on Mars with Holy crap, I heard this book was good, but not THIS good。 Where do I begin, well let's start with the science。 I absolutely loved the attention to detail when it came to every problem Mark Watney would run into in Mars。 As a huge fan of applied sciences I loved the explanations。 Okay, next, the plot itself。 It was enticing to say the least。 It's a vaguely simple idea: Man stuck on Mars, man wants to survive。 But the fact Andy Weir was able to really raise the stakes after "I'm stuck on Mars with no way home" was presented in the first paragraph is incredibly impressive。 Finally, and I saved the best for last。 My boy Mark。 Watney。 MAN I WAS ROOTING FOR HIM。 He was hilarious and I would of loved to buy him a beer。 (Also。 He brought up a good point about Aquamna controlling whales, what gives?) He was an easy person to follow around, and watching his resilience and optimism throughout the whole situation was strangely motivating。 Honestly 10/10 would recommend。 Welcome home Mark, we missed ya! 。。。more

That was great。 And the narrator just made it better。

Morgan

Critically-acclaimed for a reason! If anything, the book made me appreciate the movie adaptation even more。 Highly recommend for space nerds🚀

Andy: “I didn’t want to focus too much on deep psychological issues or anything like that。 I wanted it to be all about the problem-solving。” And that’s the fun part。 A gripping survival story with highly accurate technical details and a sparkling sense of humour。 Inspired by Mark’s optimism, resourcefulness, and action power。

Anna Thornton

Love how nerdy this is。 Being a mechanical engineer myself, I understood the science and math references which was pretty cool。 I also loved the music, TV and book references as well。 This was a great book and although the ending in the movie was slightly more dramatic and thrilling, I really enjoyed the end of this book as well。 It was strictly about Watney, his engineering genius and his retrieval from being stranded。 Love this, I will keep this on my shelf forever。

Mary Abramovich

OMG I have never read such an info dumpy book 。 Now let me say that it is obvious that the author is very smart and has done enormous research , but the minutia that he went into was at the cost of the storyline。 What really happened here , not a lot except that I felt like I was in a science course for NASA。 I had DNF'd it once and decided to try again as I needed to see why people liked it。 On the second attempt I was determined to finish it 。 I was so bored with all the stats and measurements OMG I have never read such an info dumpy book 。 Now let me say that it is obvious that the author is very smart and has done enormous research , but the minutia that he went into was at the cost of the storyline。 What really happened here , not a lot except that I felt like I was in a science course for NASA。 I had DNF'd it once and decided to try again as I needed to see why people liked it。 On the second attempt I was determined to finish it 。 I was so bored with all the stats and measurements and on and on it went 。Not for me , as I prefer a lot more character development and a lot more storyline/。 。。。more
