Summary

Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research。

In the book, you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety。 The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid。 By comparison, the cortex is the center of “worry。” That is, obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen。 In the book, Pittman and Karle make it simple by offering specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping into both of these pathways in the brain。

As you read, you’ll gain a greater understanding how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result, you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it。 The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become。 Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally “rewire” the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears。

This is a great book, which offered a great deal of new information for a novice reader。 I would recommend this book for those who are on the path to recovery or just noticing the signs of anxiety。 I however don't believe this is for someone who is in the crux of the issue because synthesizing this information needs some level of normalcy。 This is a great book, which offered a great deal of new information for a novice reader。 I would recommend this book for those who are on the path to recovery or just noticing the signs of anxiety。 I however don't believe this is for someone who is in the crux of the issue because synthesizing this information needs some level of normalcy。 。。。more

This book outlines the understanding of human anxiety from the perspective of neuroscience。 Our anxieties are generated via two neuropathy, the cortex and the amygdala。Cortex based anxiety comes from overthinking or ruminating, it is easy detected because we can trace back the thoughts which caused our anxiety, it can be treated by cognitive behaviour therapy, while amygdala based anxieties are generated from bodily reaction toward outside threatening。 Amygdala based anxiety has no way to do wit This book outlines the understanding of human anxiety from the perspective of neuroscience。 Our anxieties are generated via two neuropathy, the cortex and the amygdala。Cortex based anxiety comes from overthinking or ruminating, it is easy detected because we can trace back the thoughts which caused our anxiety, it can be treated by cognitive behaviour therapy, while amygdala based anxieties are generated from bodily reaction toward outside threatening。 Amygdala based anxiety has no way to do with rational thoughts, it is a sensation( smell, sound etc ) associated with a negative emotional reaction the threatening event caused 。 The association between these sensations and emotions is the key to understand amygdala based anxiety, Amygdala based anxieties are more pervasive thus harder to modify。 The book recommends some practice methods such as body relaxation method, breathing and mediation to reduce amygdala based anxiety。 My feeling is that neuroscience indeed can help us understand what happens inside our mind, but to change our behaviour, emotion and thoughts, these kinds of knowledge is not enough。 。。。more

Outstanding book, and an easy read at that。 Wish I had read this sooner, or for that matter, that the insights were available to me much sooner in life。 The explanation for how the brain works and responds to anxiety was very clear, and the suggestions for how to deal with anxiety - based on where it is processed in the brain - was incredibly helpful。 I've been studying techniques to deal with anxiety and have practiced them but this book helped me make better sense of which techniques are more Outstanding book, and an easy read at that。 Wish I had read this sooner, or for that matter, that the insights were available to me much sooner in life。 The explanation for how the brain works and responds to anxiety was very clear, and the suggestions for how to deal with anxiety - based on where it is processed in the brain - was incredibly helpful。 I've been studying techniques to deal with anxiety and have practiced them but this book helped me make better sense of which techniques are more appropriate and helpful under which circumstances。I now consider this book to be essential reading for anyone suffering from anxiety or living with someone who does。 。。。more

My therapist recommended this book to me and I found it to be helpful in that I was able to pinpoint the source of anxiety in my brain, which for me happens to be primarily coming from the left hemisphere of the cortex。 This book will help you identify the source of your anxiety and provide you with simple yet effective tools to help calm your nerves and mind down。 I found it to be so simple yet insightful that I bought copies for others as gifts。

After books like the confidence gap which give fun analogies for anxiety sources, this book really describes it all from an academic / medical backgroundVery informative

The book focuses a lot on the origins and mechanisms of anxiety, which is useful。 However, at this point of my life, I could really use a book focused primarily on coping strategies。Below are my takeaways。History of anxiety: Anxiety is an evolutionarily developed mechanism。 It was good for keeping our ancestors safe from foreseeable dangers, so the ones with developed anxiety are the ones who actually survived and passed on their genes。Anatomy of anxiety: Anxiety lives in the amygdala of the bra The book focuses a lot on the origins and mechanisms of anxiety, which is useful。 However, at this point of my life, I could really use a book focused primarily on coping strategies。Below are my takeaways。History of anxiety: Anxiety is an evolutionarily developed mechanism。 It was good for keeping our ancestors safe from foreseeable dangers, so the ones with developed anxiety are the ones who actually survived and passed on their genes。Anatomy of anxiety: Anxiety lives in the amygdala of the brain。 It can originate in the amygdala itself (does images) or the cortex (does thinking)。Example of amygdala-based anxiety: My fear of dogs。 (No thinking involved。 See a dog -> feel anxious。 Does not matter if the dog is small and/or friendly)。Example of cortex-based anxiety: My fear of failing a project and disappointing everyone in the process。(Thinking negative thoughts is involved)。Rewiring part:1。 Reducing sympathetic nervous system activation: Relaxation (breathing, meditation), sleeping, exercise2。 Amygdala-based anxiety: Exposure exercises (eg。 in my case, interacting with friendly dogs until I collect enough positive experience)3。 Cortex-based anxiety: Replacing anxiety-igniting thoughts with coping thoughts (eg。 replacing "I'm failing at everything so I'll fail at this too" with "I do succeed at many things。 And if I don't succeed at this one at first, I can always try again。") 。。。more

Some interesting information which left me with a few ideas to try, however this book also endorses all forms of exposure therapy including flooding, which the author states "provides relief from anxiety much more quickly [than systematic desensitization / graduated exposure]"。 To my knowledge and experience, flooding often causes much more harm than good by prolonging and enhancing the traumatic experience (and rehersing the undesired emotional experience while strengthening the neuro pathways Some interesting information which left me with a few ideas to try, however this book also endorses all forms of exposure therapy including flooding, which the author states "provides relief from anxiety much more quickly [than systematic desensitization / graduated exposure]"。 To my knowledge and experience, flooding often causes much more harm than good by prolonging and enhancing the traumatic experience (and rehersing the undesired emotional experience while strengthening the neuro pathways involved in the fear response(s))- something which is widely known in the field of canine behavioral modification and avoided at all cost。 Hoping readers take it with a grain of salt and proceed with caution。 。。。more

Excellent book!! Everyone suffers from anxiety, for some it's a lot more and others it's even debilitating。 Therefore I'd recommend this book to everyone!! And encourage parents to explain it to their children/teens。 It makes a world of difference just understanding how your brain works and what triggers anxiety。 This book covers all that and how to over come most anxiety, especially with practice。 It's not a miracle fix, but it's a start。 Knowledge is power :) This was a 6 hour audio。 Very well Excellent book!! Found this book immensely helpful for understanding why we feel anxious and what to do about it。 I very much appreciated the factual ness and tangibility that this book offers for coping with anxiety。 Listening to on audible helped as the content is a bit dry at times。 Nonetheless, one of the most helpful books I’ve read in a long time。

That book is pretty much everything you should know about anxiety, if you struggle with it。 Shockingly, therapists still mostly focus on replacing anxious thoughts with better alternatives。 While this is a very important part of the process, it’s just an element of a comprehensive coping strategy。 The book lacks some depth in terms of how to deal with specific issues such as perfectionism etc。 but it gives you enough insight to know what areas still need working on。 Highly recommended!
