Summary

One of the most influential books in the history of literature, recognized as the greatest literary masterpiece in Arabic, the Qur'an is the supreme authority and living source of all Islamic teaching, the sacred text that sets out the creed, rituals, ethics, and laws of Islam。 First published in 2004, M。 A。 S。 Abdel Haleem's superb English translation has been acclaimed for both its faithfulness to the original and its supreme clarity。 Now Haleem's translation is published side-by-side with the original Arabic text, to give readers a greater appreciation and understanding of the holy book。

Revised for the new edition, this translation is written in contemporary language that remains true to the meaning and spirit of the original, making the text crystal clear while retaining all of this great work's eloquence。 It is now set page-for-page against the most widespread traditional calligraphic Arabic text, for the benefit of Muslims who wish to make the connection between the translation and the Arabic text, as well as Arabic readers and non-Arabs learning to read the Qur'an in Arabic。 As in the original volume, the translation is completely free from the archaisms, incoherence, and alien structures that mar other translations。 Furthermore, Haleem includes notes that explain geographical, historical, and personal allusions as well as an index in which Qur'anic material is arranged into topics for easy reference。 His introduction traces the history of the Qur'an, examines its structure and stylistic features, and considers issues related to militancy, intolerance, and the subjection of women。

This brilliant bilingual edition of the Qur'an is the best available English-language translation。 It has been approved by Al-Azhar University, the oldest Muslim university and the world's leading institution for the study of Arabic and Islam。

For some reason I don't like it。 I feel constrained。 Some parts are good but some not so much。 Not my type。Bhagavad-Gita is better, in terms of what it offers to the readers。 I am taking it as a literature piece。 I believe the answer cannot be in just one monolithic work, it should be mosaic。 The answer to life must be in love。 I will read other religions texts and put everything together。 The Brothers Karamazov gave me more answers than any religious texts。 For some reason I don't like it。 I feel constrained。 Some parts are good but some not so much。 Not my type。Bhagavad-Gita is better, in terms of what it offers to the readers。 I am taking it as a literature piece。 I believe the answer cannot be in just one monolithic work, it should be mosaic。 The answer to life must be in love。 I will read other religions texts and put everything together。 The Brothers Karamazov gave me more answers than any religious texts。 。。。more

Now I can officially say that I've read the most read book of the history。The content of the Qur'an is divided in two main topics: what to do (and no to do) and stories about Mahoma meant to inspire。 So, as anyone who's read the Bible would think, yes, the Bible and the Qur'an are very similar。Finally, even thouhh I don't have enough background to understand some parts of this holly book, I didn't expect to found so much hate and violence against christians, bedouins and (above all) jews。 Now I can officially say that I've read the most read book of the history。The content of the Qur'an is divided in two main topics: what to do (and no to do) and stories about Mahoma meant to inspire。 So, as anyone who's read the Bible would think, yes, the Bible and the Qur'an are very similar。Finally, even thouhh I don't have enough background to understand some parts of this holly book, I didn't expect to found so much hate and violence against christians, bedouins and (above all) jews。 。。。more

Great for a better understanding of laws and Islamic interpretation of Abrahamic stories。Much misconception involving the laws, both by western media and racist movements, but also by Islamic fundamentalist。 However, many stories here I already knew, mainly the stuff about moses etc。 I was hoping for more original tales。 May need to search out Sorah's individually。 Great for a better understanding of laws and Islamic interpretation of Abrahamic stories。Much misconception involving the laws, both by western media and racist movements, but also by Islamic fundamentalist。 However, many stories here I already knew, mainly the stuff about moses etc。 I was hoping for more original tales。 May need to search out Sorah's individually。 。。。more

I have to say after learning what has been written in the Holy Qur'an, it has allowed me to see people and myself in this world differently and it has taken me to a whole level I really can't explain in words。 I am grateful beyond measure, the way I think is different, the way I enter act with others is even more positive。 I feel a sense of peace like never before。 I better understand myself and what our creator expects of me。 The Holy Qur'an is helping me to become the person, the woman I need I have to say after learning what has been written in the Holy Qur'an, it has allowed me to see people and myself in this world differently and it has taken me to a whole level I really can't explain in words。 I am grateful beyond measure, the way I think is different, the way I enter act with others is even more positive。 I feel a sense of peace like never before。 I better understand myself and what our creator expects of me。 The Holy Qur'an is helping me to become the person, the woman I need to be to in order to live in such a hostile environment that is happening in our world and preparing me for life after my death。 The Holy Bible that most of us are aware of in my opinion has left a void in my spiritual learning which left questions marks in my thinking。 The Holy Qur'an has not。 All the biblical questions I asked as a child and was dismissed by my grandmother was answered in the Holy Qur'an。 I'm still learning a lot, as I should and I'm looking forward to seeing how my being the person in the mirror helps to bring a good change in others。 After all, I have to be the positive change I want to see in this world and the Qur'an is helping me to do that and learn the truth little by little。 Assalamualaikum。 。。。more

I got goosebumps when I first started reading。 I could immediately relate to and understand this Oxford translation and I appreciate the introduction immensely because without its context and dispelling of myths around it, I wouldn’t have taken it as seriously。I studied the Bible a bit and have always enjoyed World Religions classes, so I was surprised when I learned that the Qur’an just confirms everything in the Old and New Testaments and that it’s just a continuation of the same message。 Just I got goosebumps when I first started reading。 I could immediately relate to and understand this Oxford translation and I appreciate the introduction immensely because without its context and dispelling of myths around it, I wouldn’t have taken it as seriously。I studied the Bible a bit and have always enjoyed World Religions classes, so I was surprised when I learned that the Qur’an just confirms everything in the Old and New Testaments and that it’s just a continuation of the same message。 Just like the Christians keeping in the Jewish holy books。 The Muslim people have been grossly misunderstood for so long and I regret any misgivings I had in the past due to events like 9/11。 There are radicals and extremists everywhere, but they never represent the majority and I’m very thankful to have read the Qur’an and now have a better understanding of their faith。I took countless pictures of certain passages so I can remember them later, as well as even considering adopting the faith myself。 It’s hard to describe how powerful it hit me and since I knew many of the biblical stories, their consistent references reinforced the overall message。I look forward to looking deeper into Islam and applying what I can of it’s teachings。 。。。more

So far, this is my review。 The Quran contains regulations for every major aspect of life。 Some of the more glaring passages are when Muhammad condones beating a disobedient wife, and the fact that the most common phrase has to be something along the lines of "Don't do this or you're going to hell。" The translator assures us that the mention of violence being justified in war must be put in the context of polytheists who harrassed the Muslims, but it's pretty easy to see how that passage could be So far, this is my review。 The Quran contains regulations for every major aspect of life。 Some of the more glaring passages are when Muhammad condones beating a disobedient wife, and the fact that the most common phrase has to be something along the lines of "Don't do this or you're going to hell。" The translator assures us that the mention of violence being justified in war must be put in the context of polytheists who harrassed the Muslims, but it's pretty easy to see how that passage could be used to justify misbehavior。 Muhammed specifically mentions those who misinterpret the Quran as being destined for hell, and oddly enough, despite the existence of Sunni and Shia Muslims that breaking into factions is a horrible crime that also destines one to hell。 But hey, he condones being with multiple women, as long as you can take care of them。 My Arabic teacher used to make jokes when he taught us the language and had us repeat how to say。。。。"One wife"。。。。"two wives"。。。。"three wives"。。。。。。! This is just a rough draft review。 By the time I finished the book, I was glad I didn't have to listen to Muhammad run his mouth anymore。 Can you believe this drivel is considered one of the best books of Arabic literature? The bar must be set very low。 The Bible is written better than this。 He's basically a big fat liar。 He's telling you that you either have to believe in God or you're going to hell and he might even send you there himself! He's nothing but a fear monger。 Aren't we a little old for these fairy tales? 。。。more

Returning back to the Qur'an, I am surprised at the minimal mention of Prophet Muhammad。 In the Bible, Jesus functions as the guiding element throughout the book while in the Qur'an, Muhammad is barely there。 It seems that the story of Moses and the Israelites is more fundamental to this holy book with mentions and references to it throughout。 Returning back to the Qur'an, I am surprised at the minimal mention of Prophet Muhammad。 In the Bible, Jesus functions as the guiding element throughout the book while in the Qur'an, Muhammad is barely there。 It seems that the story of Moses and the Israelites is more fundamental to this holy book with mentions and references to it throughout。 。。。more
