Summary

The first ever picture-book retelling of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species。

'A long, long time ago, before humans even existed, the living world looked very different from how it looks today。'

For most of human history, people believed that everything in the world was created at once。 But scientists started to challenge that idea and in 1859 Charles Darwin, a naturalist and biologist, wrote a famous book called On the Origin of Species that revolutionised the way that we have understood evolution ever since。

Now molecular biologist and illustrator Sabina Radeva has recreated Darwin's most famous work as a beautifully illustrated book。 The stunning pictures bring the theory of evolution to life for young readers, and anyone who wants to learn about evolution。

Pulling together Darwin's observations from his travels around the world and his ground-breaking explanation of how species form, develop, and change over hundreds of thousands of years, On The Origin of Species is as relevant and important now as it ever was。

A very important project, most beautifully realised。 Sabina Radeva's thoughtful text and gorgeous pictures together tell the story of On The Origin of Species, and of Evolution itself, with clarity, humour and great charm。 - Emma Darwin

An entrancing picture-book retelling of Darwin's on the Origin of Species 。。。 filled with informative, beautifully designed diagrams and maps。 - The Guardian

A beautiful picture full of condensed, simplified information from On the Origin of Species。 Definitely need to add to my personal collection。

4。5 Stars for this wonderful adaptation for younger readers。 My only quibble is an illustration showing the monkeys then men — although the author explains this misconception away in the back matter, I fear the illustration will cause some confusion。

A very very beautiful and interesting book about Darwin, Origin of species and evolution。 Loved reading it, so interesting and loved that there were quotes from Darwin/Darwin's book included。 While I knew most of the things written in this book I still learned the odd bit here and there。 And given how it was written and the gorgeous illustrations I had no problem reading the bits that I already knew。 Be sure to also check out the absolutely GORGEOUS endpapers/endpages of this book。 Those butterf A very very beautiful and interesting book about Darwin, Origin of species and evolution。 Loved reading it, so interesting and loved that there were quotes from Darwin/Darwin's book included。 While I knew most of the things written in this book I still learned the odd bit here and there。 And given how it was written and the gorgeous illustrations I had no problem reading the bits that I already knew。 Be sure to also check out the absolutely GORGEOUS endpapers/endpages of this book。 Those butterflies and beetles are just so pretty! 。。。more

A stunning, informative, and engaging age-appropriate take on Darwin's important work。 This book is aimed at 5-8 year olds and I think does such an excellent job that children older than that will enjoy it as well。 The information is presented in a logical progression and contextualizes facts with detailed illustrations。 I love that there is an easy narrative to follow as you read through this but it also includes little asides of more detail through infographics or illustrated blocks。 The book A stunning, informative, and engaging age-appropriate take on Darwin's important work。 This book is aimed at 5-8 year olds and I think does such an excellent job that children older than that will enjoy it as well。 The information is presented in a logical progression and contextualizes facts with detailed illustrations。 I love that there is an easy narrative to follow as you read through this but it also includes little asides of more detail through infographics or illustrated blocks。 The book includes snippet's of Darwin's life, quotes, and references along the way to appendixes where readers can learn a bit more about a particular topic。Again, one thing I love most about this is the way in which the narrative is organized--there is no need for a Table of Contents! I do think the amount of text could be a bit much in one sitting for many 5 year olds, but certainly this contains enough where you can revisit the book in different sections。 This is a true celebration of science at its best。 It celebrates curiosity and asking questions as well as the wonder of our natural world。 It's a beautiful and memorable book。 。。。more

Children are very fortunate these days to have access to an increasingly wider range of non-fiction books than in the past, and many of these are not only informative but also beautiful to look at。 This is the case with Sabina Radeva’s retelling of On the Origins of Species – a picture book that seeks to explain Darwin’s ideas to younger readers。I was astounded to see that this book’s origins lie in a Kickstarter project – I would have thought it would have been picked up immediately by a publis Children are very fortunate these days to have access to an increasingly wider range of non-fiction books than in the past, and many of these are not only informative but also beautiful to look at。 This is the case with Sabina Radeva’s retelling of On the Origins of Species – a picture book that seeks to explain Darwin’s ideas to younger readers。I was astounded to see that this book’s origins lie in a Kickstarter project – I would have thought it would have been picked up immediately by a publisher。 Not so, but it was soon acquired when the clever folks at Penguin Random House saw the originality and beauty of the book。 The fact that Radeva is a scientist lends this the necessary gravitas too – she studied Molecular Biology at the Max Planck Institute in Germany before leaving science years later to train as an illustrator and graphic designer。 This combination of skills is perfect for bringing Darwin’s ideas to a younger audience – or even an older one; I appreciated the way in which Radeva explained what can be quite complicated science in an approachable way。 The brief summary of Darwin’s major contributions is very helpful too – when my brain-fogged mind struggled to retain everything I’d just read, this helped bring the salient points back to the forefront! The illustrations are beautiful and detailed, as one might expect。 They help make the subject matter come to life for younger readers – anatomical but not dry, factual but warm。 This career change for Radeva has paid off well and I look forward to seeing more of her books。 。。。more

I ordered this from the library, however I accidentally ordered this children’s book about the origin of the species instead of the book by him。 Yikes。 I read it anyways。 However if you have a young child this is an excellent introduction to the book which I actually read many years ago。 I’d have loved this book as a child。

Even in this simplified form, this is not an easy topic to understand。 It is broad and complex。 I feel like it's the kind of book that can be reread over and over again and you will discover more and deeper understanding。 It's also a book that you can read in parts and focus on each area to learn more。 The illustrations are beautiful。 Even in this simplified form, this is not an easy topic to understand。 It is broad and complex。 I feel like it's the kind of book that can be reread over and over again and you will discover more and deeper understanding。 It's also a book that you can read in parts and focus on each area to learn more。 The illustrations are beautiful。 。。。more

Genre: informational nonfictionGrade: 2I loved the illustrations in this book! I personally, wouldn't read it to children, because I don't remember learning about evolution and adaptation until 8th grade, and I think that can be a controversial topic。 However, this was an educational book and I liked that it briefly shared a few different theories。 Genre: informational nonfictionGrade: 2I loved the illustrations in this book! This is a lovely picture book for young school-age children。 With rich illustrations, wonderful quotes, and well-thought narrative, the life and work of Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution is explained。 An Author’s Note, Appendix, and Misconceptions give further explanation on Darwin and evolution。 This book would be a wonderful adventure for a child and parent/caregiver to share together。

Radeva's goal is to present Darwin's book to kids, although she also gives some background on Darwin's life which I don't remember from his book so I kept forgetting that this wasn't a biography but an attempt to present his work to kids。 The illustrations are carefully and delicately drawn (pencil?) and there is a fun twist where she includes many insects that are labeled on the end pages and challenges readers to identify them as Darwin would have。It does a good job of writing in an interestin Radeva's goal is to present Darwin's book to kids, although she also gives some background on Darwin's life which I don't remember from his book so I kept forgetting that this wasn't a biography but an attempt to present his work to kids。 The illustrations are carefully and delicately drawn (pencil?) and there is a fun twist where she includes many insects that are labeled on the end pages and challenges readers to identify them as Darwin would have。It does a good job of writing in an interesting and clear way and presenting Darwin's premise and the details of natural selection, complete with a page on the eyeball showing its steady development from light sensitive patches。 This is straight from the book, since creationist pointed to complex structures like the eyeball as evidence against natural selection; it was thought that the value of incomplete structures would not be strong enough to drive evolution。The back matter includes an author's note discussing the translation from dry science book into kid-appropriate picture book, quick looks at related topics (Wallace, the less rich guy who also came up with the theory of evolution, later science such as DNA and epigenetics that add nuance, common misconceptions, and then a glossary of some of the scientific terms and some recommended reading。 It's a big, friendly, science-affirming book about an important concept in biology。 。。。more
