Summary

A shooting lays bare the secrets harboured by five families in a sleepy suburban cul-de-sac in this riveting psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of All the Wrong Places

Someone in a quiet, unassuming cul-de-sac was shot dead in the middle of the night。

Was it Maggie, the perfectionist wife, or Craig, the husband who can't quite live up to her expectations? When Maggie witnessed a shooting and later testified against a killer set free, the couple relocated, putting new pressure on their already strained union。 Maggie is constantly looking over her shoulder。 She owns a gun, just in case。

Was it Nick, a doctor whose family, especially his wife, Dani, must bear the brunt of his ill temper? Nick is an avid hunter, too, and keeps a collection of handguns。

Or was it Julia, a recently widowed grandmother? Her grandson is a troublemaker, someone not above stealing from her purse。 His friends are equally unsavoury。 Her son buys her a gun for her protection。

And then there's Olivia and her husband, Vic, who has been laid off, forcing Olivia to become the breadwinner。 Vic is resentful。 And depressed。 He's started drinking heavily, and has threatened to shoot himself on several occasions。

Or it could be one of the newlyweds, Aiden and Heidi, who are already on the rocks。 Aiden refuses to stand up to his intrusive mother。 When Heidi befriends Julia's grandson, it sets the stage for a major blow-up。

Every house owns a gun。 And anyone can be the victim, or the killer。

New to me author。 And new to me narrator。 I liked both。 The story tells you in the prologue what to expect - the question is who gets killed and who does it。 Was a long, winding road to get there, but still satisfying in the journey。 Not sure I would call this a psychological thriller though。 When I asked my buddy listeners their thoughts, they thought domestic suspense was more accurate。 I agree with that assessment。This author is on my radar now。

Cul de Sac is another perfect domestic thriller from Joy Fielding, who makes her mastery of the psychological thriller look deceptively easy and has turned her ability to hook her readers from page one into an art form。She teases the imagination, shatters illusions, and entertains with the”what ifs” as she examines relationships and proves that things are not always what they seem。 She also writes characters so well that you can actually visualize the film version as you turn the pages。 Now that Cul de Sac is another perfect domestic thriller from Joy Fielding, who makes her mastery of the psychological thriller look deceptively easy and has turned her ability to hook her readers from page one into an art form。She teases the imagination, shatters illusions, and entertains with the”what ifs” as she examines relationships and proves that things are not always what they seem。 She also writes characters so well that you can actually visualize the film version as you turn the pages。 Now that’s a good read。 。。。more

I love a good ole domestic thriller and this is no exception, but it always stings when things wrap up so cleanly and predictably。

We are introduced to the residents of a neighborhood in Florida who live side by side and initially neither know one another in depth nor give any sign of wanting to delve deeper, but in the prologue we are made aware of something horrible happening, and as the roofs are ripped off and we are privy to their secrets and shortcomings, we don't know which bomb is going to go off until the end。 If anything, this novel reminded me more of Desperate Housewives (which I gobbled up during its run), and We are introduced to the residents of a neighborhood in Florida who live side by side and initially neither know one another in depth nor give any sign of wanting to delve deeper, but in the prologue we are made aware of something horrible happening, and as the roofs are ripped off and we are privy to their secrets and shortcomings, we don't know which bomb is going to go off until the end。 If anything, this novel reminded me more of Desperate Housewives (which I gobbled up during its run), and the inhabitants of Carlyle Court and their problems are more like those families on Wisteria Lane than in any printed version。 The book is engaging, a perfect sorbet so to speak。 My only quibble being that the characters are "types," not much coloration here。 But a fun ride nonetheless。 。。。more

Joy Fielding's Cul-de-sac stands head and shoulders above other reads with the troubled neighborhood theme that seems to be so popular lately。 Her taut writing and well-depicted, complex, flawed, and believable characters had me turning page after page to reach the end。 The read was so engaging that I finished it in one day。With only five houses on the quiet street, you wouldn't think that there would be much going on, but each home and each character has secrets, BIG secrets, and lots of them! Maggie McKay is a recently seperated (from husband Craig) single mom with a 16 year old daughter, Erin, and an 8 year old son, Leo。 She's finding it hard to define herself as a single person。 Somehow through the years as wife and mother, she's lost sight of who she is as an individual。Nick and Dani Wilson are both doctors (he a well-known oncologist, she a busy dentist) and have two sons, Tyler, 10, and Ben, 8。 Based on income alone, they don't really fit in this decidedly middle-class neighborhood。Sean and Olivia Grant have twin boys, Zane and Quentin, 12, and a daughter, Katie, who is 10。 Sean lost his job as a marketing VP over a year ago and is having a hard time landing another position。 Olivia has returned to work at an advertising firm to keep the family afloat。Julia Fisher, 84, is a widowed grandmother。 She has a son, Norman, who is on his fourth wife, and a grandson Mark, 20, whom she adores。Aiden and Heidi Young are a young couple who have been married just over a year。 With Aiden's mother's constant interference and meddling, they'll be lucky to celebrate their second anniversary。The story is told from the POVs of the various characters which Fielding handles quite skillfully。 All of the secrets keep bubbling below the surface until they begin to burst out in the open, wreaking all sorts of havoc。 One of the neighbors is murdered。 Can you guess who it is?Many thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine for allowing me to read an ARC of this suspenseful novel which is scheduled to be published 8/10/21。 All opinions (and any errors) expressed in this review are my own。 。。。more

Take the good old series Desperate Housewives down a couple of notches, and you have a good idea of the characters contained in Cul-de-sac。 When a tentative friendliness develops between all of these neighbors, it results in an explosive night of What The Heck。 There are many characters in this book, mostly because each family living on the cul-de-sac is featured separately then as they interact。 It's hard to keep straight at first。 I had to re-read some portions to try to remember who was who。 Take the good old series Desperate Housewives down a couple of notches, and you have a good idea of the characters contained in Cul-de-sac。 When a tentative friendliness develops between all of these neighbors, it results in an explosive night of What The Heck。 There are many characters in this book, mostly because each family living on the cul-de-sac is featured separately then as they interact。 It's hard to keep straight at first。 I had to re-read some portions to try to remember who was who。 As I got further into the book, though, it was easier to distinguish between characters。 The character growth and development is decent, especially for such a character-heavy novel。 There are several graphic violent scenes -- especially containing domestic violence and sexual assault -- so be warned about the content。 This was my first time reading a Joy Fielding novel。 In the author's note she mentioned that this was her 29th novel, so I have a lot of reading to catch up on! Maggie and her husband are currently separated and have two children。 Maggie is scared and paranoid after a frightening incident which propelled the family to move from LA to Florida。 Julia is an 84 year-old widow whose grandson is staying with her while her son is trying to talk her into moving to a retirement community。 Sean is unemployed, drinking heavily, and lying about going to job interviews while Olivia, his wife, is doing well in her return to the job market。 Nick is an oncologist and Dani, his wife, is a dentist。 They have two sons。 Nick is controlling while Dani seems to be giving the other neighbors the cold shoulder。 Aiden and Heidi are newlyweds。 Aiden suffers from PTSD and his mother, Lisa, is the controlling, shrewish mother-in-law from the abyss。 They all have secrets and fears。 And everyone owns a gun。This is akin to a closed room murder mystery, where we are looking at a small group of people and all their problems, while knowing one of them is going to murder another one。 The characters are all caricatures of a kind of person。 It is successful in this closed-room plot element。 You do have to set disbelief aside several times and approach the novel as an often over-the-top melodrama。They are all dislikeable characters, most of them extremely so, with the exception of Julia who is a rational, sensible woman。 Maggie is the one character who experiences growth。 There are going to be several characters whose actions and problems may anger, disgust, and exasperate you。 There is abusive behavior and an assault which actually sickened me and I almost set the novel aside at this point。 I did go on to finish it and the denouement is satisfying。 Fielding makes it clear that we know everyone in the novel has a gun。 She apparently wants to equates this to danger and carelessness, which is a nonsensical and objectionable presumption to apply in such a broad general way, especially considering the actual events in the novel and the reason for the lethal force, the use of which most readers will applaud。 (And in light of the fact that we all have knives, which can also be weapons。)Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Penguin Random House。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2021/0。。。 。。。more

What is this the year of the neighborhoods gone naughty? So many books with this theme lately。 Asshole men, weak and passive women, and a neighborhood where everyone's locked and loaded does not make for a good book for me。 Here's the thing: I am anti-gun。 I don't like them one bit。 I have no desire to own one and no desire to ever shoot one。 When I hear people start spouting about their 2nd amendment rights I head in the other direction。 Simply put, guns aren't my thing。 However, I do realize g What is this the year of the neighborhoods gone naughty? Yet this book is also very anti-gun or I assume anyways because every character in this book is unstable。 Not sure if her point was that all gun owners are belligerent assholes or panic stricken weaklings but that's how it came across to me。 So as an anti-gun girl this didn't sit right with me but for a pro-gun person I don't think this would sit right with them either。 It all got a little too heavy handed。 I will say that the last 25% did have me flipping the pages。 I did guess who the victim / perpetrator was early on in the book and was proven right。 This one particular storyline just made it very obvious to me。 Most everyone in this neighborhood is unlikable except for Julia the 80-something year old resident。 She was one cool lady and definitely a bright spot in this book for me。 It was well written as Fielding has been at this writing gig for many years and I think so many people are going to love this。 My issues are from a completely personal standpoint and will likely not bother other readers。 My verdict: Take a spin around the cul-de-sac and watch the fireworks fly! 3 stars! Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for my copy。 。。。more

Cul-de-sac by Joy Fielding is a slow burn of a thriller that had me hooked from the very start。 I will read anything by this author, and I was ecstatic to get my hands on her latest。 I was not disappointed。On a quiet cul-de-sac in an upscale Florida neighbourhood, five families co-exist, their lives intersecting only rarely as they go about their daily lives。 Our picture of the harmonious dynamic shifts, however, when someone on the cul-de-sac is shot and, as each domestic scenario is revealed, Cul-de-sac by Joy Fielding is a slow burn of a thriller that had me hooked from the very start。 I will read anything by this author, and I was ecstatic to get my hands on her latest。 I was not disappointed。On a quiet cul-de-sac in an upscale Florida neighbourhood, five families co-exist, their lives intersecting only rarely as they go about their daily lives。 Our picture of the harmonious dynamic shifts, however, when someone on the cul-de-sac is shot and, as each domestic scenario is revealed, it becomes evident that circumstances behind each closed door are not what they seem, and in fact each house on the street harbours not only a gun, but the simmering potential and motive for murder。 Do we ever really know what goes on behind closed doors? This is Joy Fielding at her very best。 4。5 starsMany thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for an ARC。 。。。more

4。5 stars but I will gladly round up to 5 as I could not put this book down。 Cul-de-Sac has everything I love: murder, lies, secrets , nasty people and those who you just cheer on。Someone was shot dead on this affluent Cul-De-Sac but who?So many of the neighbours to chose from。The saying what goes on behind closed doors is proven to be true in this book,The pages fly by as you race to see who was shot 。Another great story by Joy Fielding who never disappoints。Thanks to NetGalley and Random House 4。5 stars but I will gladly round up to 5 as I could not put this book down。 Cul-de-Sac has everything I love: murder, lies, secrets , nasty people and those who you just cheer on。Someone was shot dead on this affluent Cul-De-Sac but who?So many of the neighbours to chose from。The saying what goes on behind closed doors is proven to be true in this book,The pages fly by as you race to see who was shot 。Another great story by Joy Fielding who never disappoints。Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Canada, Doubleday Canada for a thrill of a read。 。。。more
