Summary

In an astonishing feat of narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history。 In 1940 Charles A。 Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President。 Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism。

For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh's election is the first in a series of ruptures that threatens to destroy his small, safe corner of America - and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother。

Both funny and frightening。

The characters were good, and the premise was interesting。 The author did a good job of setting up a believable alternative history, but the ending was rushed and too pat。。。had to get back to the status quo so the America we now know could happen。

Excellent and scary。 The end was a little too neat for what we now know about how politicians in the thrall of an autocrat actually behave when faced with a choice between doing the right thing and pleasing their master。

My first Roth novel and am very impressed indeed。 Prescient, moving, and frightening。

This was a well written and disturbing book。 I wasn't expecting to like the format of an alternate history but Roth made it work。 And he had me wondering if he had a glimpse at crystal ball and saw the state of America when he wrote this book。 Highly recommend。 This was a well written and disturbing book。 I wasn't expecting to like the format of an alternate history but Roth made it work。 And he had me wondering if he had a glimpse at crystal ball and saw the state of America when he wrote this book。 Highly recommend。 。。。more

Well that was a letdown。 Lots of promise, but after a couple chapters the prescient imagining of an American descent into fascism devolves into a disjointed coming of age story。 The transition to the ending is astonishingly clumsy given Roth's talent and experience。 It almost felt tacked on, as if the story of the unraveling of a Jewish family was the book he really wanted to write and the publishers asked him to give greater focus to the fascist plot。 It has its moments, but honestly I wouldn't Well that was a letdown。 Lots of promise, but after a couple chapters the prescient imagining of an American descent into fascism devolves into a disjointed coming of age story。 The transition to the ending is astonishingly clumsy given Roth's talent and experience。 It almost felt tacked on, as if the story of the unraveling of a Jewish family was the book he really wanted to write and the publishers asked him to give greater focus to the fascist plot。 It has its moments, but honestly I wouldn't be misled by the name recognition and superficial connection to recent events。 The Plot Against America is eminently skippable。3/5, which might be generous 。。。more
