Summary

Sir Richard Kenworthy has less than a month to find a bride。 He knows he can't be too picky, but when he sees Iris Smythe-Smith hiding behind her cello at her family's infamous musicale, he thinks he might have struck gold。 She's the type of girl you don't notice until the second—or third—look, but there's something about her, something simmering under the surface, and he knows she's the one。

Iris Smythe–Smith is used to being underestimated。 With her pale hair and quiet, sly wit she tends to blend into the background, and she likes it that way。 So when Richard Kenworthy demands an introduction, she is suspicious。 He flirts, he charms, he gives every impression of a man falling in love, but she can't quite believe it's all true。 When his proposal of marriage turns into a compromising position that forces the issue, she can't help thinking that he's hiding something 。 。 。 even as her heart tells her to say yes。

I have been reading Julia Quinn’s books lately and have enjoyed this one。

3。5 stars rounded up。 I have read so many Julia Quinn books, I need to distinguish them a bit more - as I do like some better than others。 This is one of the ones I liked more。 I liked Iris, I liked Sir Richard, and I loved their smart banter。 Fortunately, by book 4, we didn't have much of the story dedicated to the actual musicale。 Taking Iris and Richard away to his home so quickly was a very different approach to the relationship。 The building tension as Richard tried to be respectful, romant 3。5 stars rounded up。 I have read so many Julia Quinn books, I need to distinguish them a bit more - as I do like some better than others。 This is one of the ones I liked more。 I liked Iris, I liked Sir Richard, and I loved their smart banter。 Fortunately, by book 4, we didn't have much of the story dedicated to the actual musicale。 Taking Iris and Richard away to his home so quickly was a very different approach to the relationship。 The building tension as Richard tried to be respectful, romantic, and doating was lovely。 While Richard did not always make the best decisions, he was a sweet man overall with great respect for Iris。 。。。more

Sir Richard Kenworthy needs a wife ASAP and wants to target someone who's desperate, overlooked, and not a terrible companion in the long run。 He sets his eyes on Iris Smythe–Smith during one of those awful musicales and proceeds with his plan to ruin her reputation。 He doesn't expect to actually start feeling anything for his victim。 Iris must survive her husband's plans for her。You'll notice that what I've just summarised doesn't sound like a romance novel。 Honestly, this book should be called Sir Richard Kenworthy needs a wife ASAP and wants to target someone who's desperate, overlooked, and not a terrible companion in the long run。 He sets his eyes on Iris Smythe–Smith during one of those awful musicales and proceeds with his plan to ruin her reputation。 He doesn't expect to actually start feeling anything for his victim。 Iris must survive her husband's plans for her。You'll notice that what I've just summarised doesn't sound like a romance novel。 Honestly, this book should be called The Red Flags of Sir Richard Kenworthy, because he sure dropped a lot of them。 Holy abusive husband, Batman! Iris and her sisters-in-law were actually great characters and I'd have liked to read this book about them, with no Richard in sight。 But unfortunately Richard was in this an awful lot -and he was so disturbing that I nearly DNFed multiple times。 Give this one a miss。 。。。more

Audiobook。 Another great story。

2 1/2 stars。 Sad ending to the otherwise very cute saga of the Smythe-Smith family。 Ridiculous that it was 2/3 thru the book that the secret was finally revealed。

All of the stars are for Iris。 She deserved so much better。 This entire family was awful to her and I’m to believe all was right in the world after all was revealed? How do you ever trust any of them?! Ugh

One of the more interesting storylines in this set。 Amazing tension in what is said and what is unsaid。 The subtleties, that lead you to the path the story will eventually take, are quite lovely。 And the character of our love interests is remarkably expressed。 And as always, intimate conversation between close family members just hits the spot。 I enjoyed the story thoroughly。

Finally a story with a bit of different and refreshing plot and not just dance balls, infatuations, and babies。 Romance part has definitely incredibly thinned as books go down on this series but tbh It feels nice to have a realistic plot than just a predictable love story。 Coming to the novel, I loved the dialogue flow as usual。 JQ has a nice way to put a conversation together that makes you think you were actually there。 Although I personally think Iris forgave Richard quickly but it’s understa Finally a story with a bit of different and refreshing plot and not just dance balls, infatuations, and babies。 Romance part has definitely incredibly thinned as books go down on this series but tbh It feels nice to have a realistic plot than just a predictable love story。 Coming to the novel, I loved the dialogue flow as usual。 JQ has a nice way to put a conversation together that makes you think you were actually there。 Although I personally think Iris forgave Richard quickly but it’s understandable for a small size novel。 。。。more

Oof I have mixed feelings about this book - it was so good, but I hated how Sir Richard manipulated Iris。 I can see how he was just acting with his sister’s best interest in mind considering he is her only guardian, but UGH poor Iris! It all resolves in the end like every other Julia Quinn book, though! I was happy with it in the end。

Iris te amo。 Yo hubiese mandado a todos a la mierda。 Richard。。。 No sé si puedo perdonar como trataste a Iris。

Interesting

I wanted to strangle a few of the characters, Sir Richard especially。 Iris deserved so much more!

No se como sentirme al respecto。 Lo unico que sé es que Iris se merece las 4 estrellas, Richard tengo mis dudas。

I’ve been looking forward to Iris’ book since the first book in this series。 What a huge let down。 I spent most of the book confused and the rest disgusted。 I hated Richard and I hated the way Iris’ character had changed from the past books。 She lost all of her fire and everything that made me love her in the three previous books。 Such a shame, because I really loved Iris and she deserved better…

Laura Pyle

I was pleasantly surprised。 The Hero was not that awful。 He made some pretty dumb mistakes, and then paid for them。 His grovelling for forgiveness scene was awesome。 At the end, he loved the heroine and proved it。 And he loved his family, and proved it。

It was such an intense story to read and honestly, I was sad to say goodbye to the Smythe-Smith family :( This book definitely wasn't as great as the others with really interesting stories and funny characters。 This one was definitely more towards the mystery and suspense in the air that has us grabbing the book and holding our breaths。 I had no idea what the secret of Sir Richard could be until one clue and as soon as I realized it。。。 oh boy。 Despite that it wasn't a bad book it such hasn't wha It was such an intense story to read and honestly, I was sad to say goodbye to the Smythe-Smith family :( This book definitely wasn't as great as the others with really interesting stories and funny characters。 This one was definitely more towards the mystery and suspense in the air that has us grabbing the book and holding our breaths。 I had no idea what the secret of Sir Richard could be until one clue and as soon as I realized it。。。 oh boy。 Despite that it wasn't a bad book it such hasn't what Julia Quinn usually is for me but that is ok。 I did really loved the series and this book is worth reading。 。。。more

The “secret” was drawn out too long。 I was getting irritated waiting to find out。 Once it was found out the story rushed to an end。 Not the best JQ book。

In each of the series I have read by Julia there is always one in each that misses the mark。 The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy is by far the worst of these duds。 Most of the Bridgerton novels and the spin-offs follow basically the same story。 You know where they’re going, they’re easy to read and there’s not a lot to figure out, however they’ve always still held my attention and I’ve gone into them with the intention of an easy enjoyable read。 Even the odd dud story I haven’t outright hated。 In each of the series I have read by Julia there is always one in each that misses the mark。 The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy is by far the worst of these duds。 Most of the Bridgerton novels and the spin-offs follow basically the same story。 You know where they’re going, they’re easy to read and there’s not a lot to figure out, however they’ve always still held my attention and I’ve gone into them with the intention of an easy enjoyable read。 Even the odd dud story I haven’t outright hated。 Not the case with this one。In the other smythe-smith novels Iris has seemed like such a strong character in the background but in her own story, she somehow gets lost。 Having a character confused for 2/3’s of the book is not a storyline, it's just tedious and inane。 Sir Richard is a callous moron and no number of recounts of how bad he feels made me feel any warmth or understanding for the situation he created。Almost 400 pages of nothing but boredom and/or irritation。The only plus side for those that want to read all of Julia’s series, each book can be considered a standalone, you don’t need to read all of them to understand the stories in the next, so it's easy to skip the duds if you know which ones they are。 。。。more

I've read a lot of books by this author lately, however, this was the first one that I was truly disappointed by。 Iris deserved better。。。Sir Richard Kenworthy came to London for one reason only, to find a wife。 He has a tight deadline, just about a month。 At the annual Smythe-Smith concert, he sees Iris hiding behind the cello and picks her as his wife。 He goes to great lengths to ensure marriage but does reveal the reason for the rush until later when they arrive at his home。 The trouble in his I've read a lot of books by this author lately, however, this was the first one that I was truly disappointed by。 Iris deserved better。。。Sir Richard Kenworthy came to London for one reason only, to find a wife。 He has a tight deadline, just about a month。 At the annual Smythe-Smith concert, he sees Iris hiding behind the cello and picks her as his wife。 He goes to great lengths to ensure marriage but does reveal the reason for the rush until later when they arrive at his home。 The trouble in his scheme is that he falls for her。Iris is often overlooked because of her looks, so when Sir Richard tries to charms her, she is very suspicious。 I really dislike Sir Richard and the way he basically used her。 Again, Iris deserved better。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this book which is why I'd love to give it 2。5 stars (damn you Goodreads, let us do half stars!)。 The character of Iris made this book。 She was great。What drew away from her amazingness was the fact that her husband manipulated her into marriage and then proceeded to lie to her for weeks afterwards。The romance, as ever for Quinn, read very sweetly but I just couldn't bring myself away from the ickyness of the relationship。 Not one of her best。。。 I have mixed feelings about this book which is why I'd love to give it 2。5 stars (damn you Goodreads, let us do half stars!)。 The character of Iris made this book。 She was great。What drew away from her amazingness was the fact that her husband manipulated her into marriage and then proceeded to lie to her for weeks afterwards。The romance, as ever for Quinn, read very sweetly but I just couldn't bring myself away from the ickyness of the relationship。 Not one of her best。。。 。。。more
