Summary

I loved this book! Well written and a good story。 The weaving of the construction of the Christo statue, in Rio, into the story was utterly mesmerising。 I loved the fact that ladies, from the convent, wrote inscriptions on the back of each soapstone tile that would cover the statue。I've just tried to download Book 2 but it's not available until November and I'm not surprised。 I think some of my Book Club Bibliophiles have read the other books out of order but I'd prefer to read them in order。 I loved this book!

Roman de plage。 Easy read。 Entertaining, quite original because it happens in Geneva and Brazil。 The underlying stories are quite entertaining and they mix together quite well。 They are 7 books - one for each adopted sister。 One is enough for me。

Took a bit for me to get invested in the story but once I did I couldn’t put it down。 I loved it!

Andrea

Long, but it did not bother me as much as some。 Interesting premise, likable characters。

Bardzo ciekawa, fajnie opowiedziana historia。 Retrospekcje wbudowane w całą fabułę były świetnym pomysłem i niekiedy zajmowały bardziej, niż historia z perspektywy Mai。 Wątek miłosny dość przewidywalny, ale przyjemnie się czytało o tej relacji。 Autorka świetnie oddaje klimat opisywanych miejsc i czasów。 Kilka nierozwiązanych wątków pozostawia miejsce na domysły i otwiera pole do popisu w kolejnych częściach książki。 Otwarte zakończenie, które ładnie zaczyna historię drugiej siostry- Ally。 Książk Bardzo ciekawa, fajnie opowiedziana historia。 Retrospekcje wbudowane w całą fabułę były świetnym pomysłem i niekiedy zajmowały bardziej, niż historia z perspektywy Mai。 Wątek miłosny dość przewidywalny, ale przyjemnie się czytało o tej relacji。 Autorka świetnie oddaje klimat opisywanych miejsc i czasów。 Kilka nierozwiązanych wątków pozostawia miejsce na domysły i otwiera pole do popisu w kolejnych częściach książki。 Otwarte zakończenie, które ładnie zaczyna historię drugiej siostry- Ally。 Książka jest ciekawa i dobrze napisana, ma fajny ,,klimat”。 Na pewno nieoczywistym pomysłem jest wykorzystanie motywów mitologicznych, chociaż myślę, że będzie to bardziej rozwinięte w kolejnych częściach。 Chętnie przeczytam pozostałe tomy。 。。。more

Slow going and a lengthy build, but quite lovely in the end。 Fun to read historical fiction set in Rio and always lovely to be in Paris in the 1920s。 I will miss the characters and will definitely pick up another installment in the series (there are 7 now, wowza!) to discover more of the sisters and their mysteries。

I really wanted to like this book but when I finished it I was relieved it was over!At first, I was curious about Maia birth secret。 But, quickly Maia's story became just a background story and the revelation was so disappointing。。。And I really didn't care about her! It was all so cliché!Izabela's story was more interesting because we could see how life were in Brazil during this time period。I don't think I'll continue this serie。。。 I really wanted to like this book but when I finished it I was relieved it was over!At first, I was curious about Maia birth secret。 But, quickly Maia's story became just a background story and the revelation was so disappointing。。。And I really didn't care about her! Telling the story of Maia, one of the Seven Sisters at the heart of this novel, this book was so captivating! I totally loved this one - the international travel, digging into family/origin story… loved it!

WTW?!!!????This book and series is very popular。 Riley has, sadly, recently passed away and this has pushed the books even higher into the best seller lists, but… I just don’t get it。 This book was just so awful。 So awful, in fact, that at around the 40% mark I couldn’t go on and I threw it into my DNF pile。The first part was horrendous。 We learn that the very ‘mysterious’ Pa Salt has died。 Pa Salt had adopted six girls and brought them to live on his island。 Only Maia, the heroine of book one, WTW?!!!????This book and series is very popular。 Riley has, sadly, recently passed away and this has pushed the books even higher into the best seller lists, but… I just don’t get it。 This book was just so awful。 So awful, in fact, that at around the 40% mark I couldn’t go on and I threw it into my DNF pile。The first part was horrendous。 We learn that the very ‘mysterious’ Pa Salt has died。 Pa Salt had adopted six girls and brought them to live on his island。 Only Maia, the heroine of book one, still lives on the island but the other five sisters come home when they learn ol’ Pa is dead。 Well, he might be still alive for all I know。 After all, none of the sisters got to see his body because his Will called for him to be tossed over the side of a yacht as soon as he died with no funeral。 But Marina the housekeeper reckons he’s dead, so we’ll go with that for now。 You couldn’t help but know this part of the book as it’s repeated each time a sister arrives at the island。 Yes, basically the first third of the book could have been a 10 page recap of Maia’s life up until now instead of stilted dialogue with supposedly close sisters。 (So close they all leave the island and return to their own lives exactly one day after reuniting to discuss Pa’s sudden demise。 Okay then…)This whole Pa Salt mystery thing was creepy as。 He just randomly brings babies to an island? Even if I go with the flow that he isn’t some Jeffrey Epstein clone, it’s still weirdly unbelievable that when these girls grow up none of them know his real name (I assume Pa Salt is not it) nor what he does for a living, or really anything other than he likes to collect girl babies。 WTW?Anyway, I persevered as I had read that the book’s historical plotline was better。 It wasn’t。 It was perhaps even more cliched than the contemporary storyline。 If you’ve read a Judith Krantz or a Barbara Taylor Bradford somewhere along the line you can probably predict most of the outcomes and those ladies probably had sharper dialogue and more likeable characters。I kept going for a while but finally I decided I had too many other books to read。 I don’t recommend and this definitely makes my list of most overrated books ever。 1 out of 5 。。。more

I thought that the book was a bit too much like Chick Lit initially, and wondered why it has so much hype。 However it developed into a well researched and crafted story, based on true events and some real characters。 I enjoyed it and would recommend。

I was skeptical。I was negative。I was prejudiced。I had already made up my mind。I was wrong。Now, I totally get it, I do。 Now, I understand why this book has become so popular。In the beginning, the plot started slowly and was boring。 During the first pages, I actually found the plot and characters as quite a cliché。 But then the main character, Maia, set out to a journey and started looking for her past, then it all turned。 And suddenly I was hooked on finding out what had happened to Maia's family I was skeptical。I was negative。I was prejudiced。I had already made up my mind。I was wrong。Now, I totally get it, I do。 Now, I understand why this book has become so popular。In the beginning, the plot started slowly and was boring。 During the first pages, I actually found the plot and characters as quite a cliché。 But then the main character, Maia, set out to a journey and started looking for her past, then it all turned。 And suddenly I was hooked on finding out what had happened to Maia's family。I got a really good feeling when reading this book - it turned out to be a very beautiful novel, with beautiful cities, like Rio, Paris, Geneva。 There were beautiful women, beautiful sisters with beautiful names named after stars。 Forbidden love, greed, honor, shame, passion, family secrets。 There was an alcoholic husband who saw his wife as one of his assets he could claim whenever he wanted。 And there was a handsome and artistic Frenchman involved, who made it all more complicated。I have to admit it; this book entertained me。 After a few pages, though。 Lucinda Riley did it to me, as well。 She enchanted me with her magical storytelling ability and somehow made her book-series an addiction。 。。。more

This was a fine holiday read。 There were some things really irritating me about the story that I didn’t understand but from reading the reviews I realise these will be dealt with in the other books。

DNF at 6 ℅The protagonist and her life are mostly uninteresting, drama is supposed to start after the wealthy father dies, and there are clues, and almost nothing has happened so far。This reminds me of a bad Turkish soap opera。

Lovely story。 Beautifully written you can feel yourself in the story
