Summary

It’s a perfect beach day, or so thought the family, young couple, a few tourists, and a refugee who all end up in the same secluded, idyllic cove filled with rock pools and sandy shore, encircled by green, densely vegetated cliffs。
But this utopia hides a dark secret。
First there is the dead body of a woman found floating in the crystal-clear water。
Then there is the odd fact that all the children are aging rapidly。 Soon everybody is growing older—every half hour—and there doesn’t seem to be any way out of the cove。 Levy’s dramatic storytelling works seamlessly with Peeters’s sinister art to create a profoundly disturbing and fantastical mystery。

Praise for Sandcastle:

“Begins like a murder mystery, continues like an episode of The Twilight Zone, and finishes with a kind of existentialism that wouldn’t be out of place in a Von Trier film。” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Sandcastle is a fast 112-page read you won't be able to put down。”  Cleveland。com

“Peeters and Lévy convey some profound, if profoundly unsubtle, truths about the human condition。 Weighty stuff, expertly told。” —The Comics Bulletin

I liked the ending a lot。Very sad, bittersweet。 But you either accept it, or spend your whole life fighting against it。

Read in preparation to consume (with skepticism) M。 Night Shyamalan's latest。 While the themes were spot on, artwork were brilliant and the ending was brutal, I was a little disturbed by the nudity, xenophobia and sexual content involving children in this story and question it's inclusion, seeing as it added nothing to this story about impending death and human fear of aging。 Here's hoping that gets left on the cutting room floor。 Read in preparation to consume (with skepticism) M。 Night Shyamalan's latest。 While the themes were spot on, artwork were brilliant and the ending was brutal, I was a little disturbed by the nudity, xenophobia and sexual content involving children in this story and question it's inclusion, seeing as it added nothing to this story about impending death and human fear of aging。 Here's hoping that gets left on the cutting room floor。 。。。more

A page-turner, the graphic novel managed to creep and disturb me so much from what was going on that I didn't really have to question what was keeping them on the beach。 I like the mystery behind it and the bleak future that awaits its characters。 I highly recommend reading the graphic novel before seeing the film since the latter is a more of a different interpretation than a direct adaptation。 A page-turner, the graphic novel managed to creep and disturb me so much from what was going on that I didn't really have to question what was keeping them on the beach。 I like the mystery behind it and the bleak future that awaits its characters。 I highly recommend reading the graphic novel before seeing the film since the latter is a more of a different interpretation than a direct adaptation。 。。。more

Sandcastle looks like it could, from a distance, be a great comic to write a movie off of, and yes that is why I'm here。 I imagine that's why a lot of people are。 This。。。 is almost definitely better than the movie。 It's a concept where too much depth can actually be a bad thing, as in some speculative fiction where the humans are being tossed around like lab rats at fate's uncaring whim, and I don't want to go too far into the horror of rapidly aging psychology, or at least, not of everyone here Sandcastle looks like it could, from a distance, be a great comic to write a movie off of, and yes that is why I'm here。 I imagine that's why a lot of people are。 This。。。 is almost definitely better than the movie。 It's a concept where too much depth can actually be a bad thing, as in some speculative fiction where the humans are being tossed around like lab rats at fate's uncaring whim, and I don't want to go too far into the horror of rapidly aging psychology, or at least, not of everyone here, in the space provided。 I think the detail given is the detail needed, and the slightly affectionate semi-realist dialogue is going to about fill you on the "caring about these humans" side。 Which you still might not。 I don't think that makes this story that much worse, which says a lot about the kind of story it is。 A disgusting one, mainly, which is why my star rating is so low, but this is primarily because of a visceral revulsion I feel towards mentally pubescent sex as a vehicle of half of the plot。 There's not a lot of light around that which will in any way shelter you from the repeated blugeon of dubious consent, let alone just nasty behavior。 It embraces the shortness of life as exposure of the bones of human ugliness to the stark, bleaching sun。 The art reflects this。 The ugliness of human bodies is a constant theme, with emphasis on wrinkles, bodily functions, slightly dispassionate views of corpses as things begin to break down。 The starkness of it definitely offers。。。 some emotional reaction。 Maybe not a positive one。 Does it necessarily want you to feel positive emotions? No。 。。。more

A short parable with some uncomfortable moments, tackling the chilling yet relatable subject of our own mortality。 I thought it was more effective than the film, in that it was shorter with less drag and had a more mysterious tone。 This isn’t supposed to be a thriller like the film was trying to be, at least in my opinion。 Instead, it’s more a commentary on the overall shortness of our lives, and how the things that we make and add to the earth, like the sandcastles, will outlive ourselves。 The A short parable with some uncomfortable moments, tackling the chilling yet relatable subject of our own mortality。 I thought it was more effective than the film, in that it was shorter with less drag and had a more mysterious tone。 This isn’t supposed to be a thriller like the film was trying to be, at least in my opinion。 Instead, it’s more a commentary on the overall shortness of our lives, and how the things that we make and add to the earth, like the sandcastles, will outlive ourselves。 The art was also great at making simple moments seem sinister, and the use of shadow was well done。 However, the pregnancy scene was still odd and weird。 I think it was built up better than in the film, with the girl stating that she wished to be grown up, has gotten her wish, and wants to solidify her new status as a grown up, as opposed to just the vague “feeling” from the film, but it didn’t make it any less uncomfortable。 I do think it was better that the child survives, and becomes our sole survivor, building a sandcastle alone on the now lifeless beach, because it works better with the theme of life continuing, even after death。 ‘In life, we are surrounded by death。’ 。。。more
