Summary

Murakami never disappoints。 I feel like the reading experience will not be as great if you read this book in English。。。 but the way he writes in Japanese is just so calming and smooth and makes me feel nostalgic, even when he's not really writing about anything。 Murakami never disappoints。 I feel like the reading experience will not be as great if you read this book in English。。。 but the way he writes in Japanese is just so calming and smooth and makes me feel nostalgic, even when he's not really writing about anything。 。。。more

I don’t understand why I wasted money on Murakami’s book again。 Again, there is a reason why he never gets the Nobel Prize。 His stories always contain the same elements - sex and weird fantasy with metaphors, sometimes with a bit of music knowledge thrown in。 At least this book is a collection of short stories, not the lengthy boring long story that drags into two book。 I guess “Men without Women” is the only book that I really like。

Dinstinctive Murakami short story collection around love, humanity, what-seems-like-reality and。。。 Memory loss, guilt and a meta layer of the writing itself with a strong blend of the narrator and Murakami-san himself which was done well。 I do not think the stories blew me away, but one of my favourites was Charlie Parker Plays Bossa Nova。

In these eight short stories we get the Murakami we know and like (or dislike): the sharp, crisp feelings, the wordplays, the sudden apparition of magical creatures, the theme of death and suicide, seemingly apathetic/passive protagonists, music。 In these eight short stories, however, I could feel more of the later work from Murakami: less structured, more willingly to just tell us what he has to say, no matter what we think about it。 I think everyone will like some stories and enjoy others less In these eight short stories we get the Murakami we know and like (or dislike): the sharp, crisp feelings, the wordplays, the sudden apparition of magical creatures, the theme of death and suicide, seemingly apathetic/passive protagonists, music。 In these eight short stories, however, I could feel more of the later work from Murakami: less structured, more willingly to just tell us what he has to say, no matter what we think about it。 I think everyone will like some stories and enjoy others less, it all depends on which one of his “themes” you like the most: the music, the magic, the people, death。 Not his best collection of short stories but surely worth reading and enjoying (found myself trying to slow down to let the words sink, I think that in these more eerie, impressionist works the real craftsmanship is more in the way the content is delivered than in the content itself) 。。。more

So the actual writing of the short stories is great。 The sentence structure and choice of words makes this a pleasent read。Yet the content of the stories left me dissatisfied。 The second to last one I found nice but the others I either did not understand and/or found quite boring。

Murakami truly seems to be a bit hit or miss for me, and this one was a miss。 My first time reading him in the German translation and while I liked how Ursula Gräfe translated him - it did feel very on brand and familiar - the short stories themselves bored me with their lack of depth。 Or meaning。 The only one I enjoyed was Carnaval, the rest left me underwhelmed。 A shame when I paid so much for this hardback new release。。。

The work of Japanese author Haruki Murakami usually takes one of two modes: either a story or a novel is a tale of the fantastic or it is one of kitchen sink realism。 Rarely do the two intermingle。 However, in Murakami’s new short story collection, First Person Singular (and all eight of the stories in the collection are written in the first person singular), the two overlap to some degree to create a hybrid, a middle oval in a Venn diagram。 Some stories appear to be outright fiction and fabulis The work of Japanese author Haruki Murakami usually takes one of two modes: either a story or a novel is a tale of the fantastic or it is one of kitchen sink realism。 Rarely do the two intermingle。 However, in Murakami’s new short story collection, First Person Singular (and all eight of the stories in the collection are written in the first person singular), the two overlap to some degree to create a hybrid, a middle oval in a Venn diagram。 Some stories appear to be outright fiction and fabulist, while other stories seem to be based on a real event or events in the author’s life。 (One story towards the end of the volume is told strictly from the author’s viewpoint — he is named as the narrator — and seems to be an essay about his fandom of Japanese baseball。) Thus, this question begs the question: is it real or is it Memorex?First Person Singular marks an improvement over Murakami’s last story collection, Men Without Women (first published in English in 2017)。 I found some of the stories in that tome to be fairly wispy and didn’t captivate my interest at all。 In comparison, I read First Person Singular in one sitting of a little less than three hours on an early spring Sunday afternoon。 These are stories that are gripping and compelling for the most part — though there is the odd semi-dud sprinkled amongst them, the first story in the collection being one of them (it’s about a chance meeting with an old man with a bizarre take on circles)。 Despite this, you’ll want to sit on the edge of your seat as you plow through these usually masterful takes on the bizarre and yet seemingly realistic at the same time。 There’s no central theme to a lot of these stories。 They seem to be meant for the sole purpose of entertaining and entertain they do。Read the rest of the review here: https://zachary-houle。medium。com/a-re。。。 。。。more

。。。more

Usually, I am not。 I’ve read some good collections but I will always choose a novel over short stories。 The one thing I can say about Murakami is that sometimes his short works become novels so I pay special attention to his stories when they come out。First Person Singular is an accurate representation of his writing style。 I always struggle to find the right words to describe his writing but his stories always touch on isolation and his protagonists usually are everyday guys who dress and live simply。 They are often observers of people, going about their lives。 There is a simplicity to this but also a complexity when you think about how complex human beings can be。His characters often just sidle up to a bar and have conversations with strange people, usually women。 This is the case in the story which provides the title for the book, First Person Singular。 What appears to be innocent chit chat suddenly becomes an accusation of something he’s done in the past。 What has he done? Three years was so long ago。In Confessions of a Shinagawa Monkey, a man is enjoying a beer with a talking monkey。 While chatting with this monkey, the monkey confesses that he’s stolen names of the women he’s loved。 It’s such a strange, personal thing to take from a person。 Can you really love someone so much that their identity is taken away from them? Yes。One of my favorite stories, The Yakult Swallows, appears to be auto-biographical and touches on Murakami’s love of baseball。 He talks about his father and how they used to enjoy a good ball game。 His love for the field itself really shines in this one。 He puts you right in the stands。The thing that I love most about Murakami is his love for music。 All of his novels include music in some way and many of his books have playlists on Spotify to enjoy while reading his books。 In this collection, he includes a story titled, Carnaval。 This story centers around Schumann’s Carnaval and while reading it I had to listen to it, which was easy enough to do and set the mood quite nicely。Murakami’s stories can be odd but I find them to be so refreshing。 I often refer to them as “palate” cleansers。 They are like nothing I’ve read before and always border on magical realism and the mundane。 You would not think the two could live successfully in a book but they do quite nicely when Murakami is at the helm。 Weird and wonderful are words I use a lot to describe his writing too。 If you know, you know but if you aren’t familiar with him, give him a try。 I’ve reviewed nearly everything he’s written。 My favorites can be found below:Kafka on the ShoreThe Wind-Up Bird ChronicleKilling CommendatoreWhat I Talk About When I Talk About RunningAs for this collection, it’s a win。 You’ll be thinking about these stories long after reading the last one。For more reviews, visit my blog: Book Chatter。 。。。more
